Kinda depends on the type of nuke and intended target. An air-burst is detonated anywhere in between 100m and 1km and causes severe surface damage and fallout to a massive area. A surface detonation like seen in this video is commonly used in tactical nukes or precision strikes, these cause less area damage however it causes a lot more localised damage. Also a surface detonation has less fallout travelling further away (obviously being near the blast is still very radioactive) which makes it better for strategic purposes

Nuclear bombs will actually detonate a few meters off the ground for more damage.. it wouldn’t land on the ground before it explodes..

Nuclear bomb never exploses on the ground. It exploses between 300m and 500m altitude.
