The bad thing about that particular VSI joystick is that because there is no separate controller, it is expensive to replace. The good thing about is that, unless there is a motor fault, replacing it almost always solve the problem if it is not a loose connection or other easy adjustment. You can find them on eBay and some WC-related website used for about $250 right now. That is probably the cheapest fix. Most places won’t actually troubleshoot and repair the small circuitry on the board of the controller. Rather they will swap the board or the entire controller. Those controllers can have different wiring harnesses coming out of them, depending on the chair you have. If you get a different wiring harmess, you can open the controller with either a “T15” driver once you remove it from the chair. Then you can swap your wiring harness onto that controller. But only do that if the replacement controllers wires are different from yours, or if it appears damaged. In that last case, your should have paid bargain prices for your replacement part.
That is for the DIY hardy. Most people will be better off hiring out this process. But if you read my description and thought ‘I could do that’, you’re probably right. If you can’t figure out how to remove the controller from the chair then you will definitely need help.
Most electronic circuit boards these days are so complex and compact that most repairs consist of swapping whole boards or components. Few techs actually probe the boards, de-solder and replace the tiny parts at fault. There are specialty shops online that do this. But often it is cheaper to source a working used replacement. There is some risk to this. But if you buy it off of eBay and it is faulty though reputed to be working, eBay will have your back. On my jazzy chair, I keep an extra controller on hand tgat I bought used and then tested on my chair. That way only motor faults can put my chair out of commission. I am working on sourcing replacement Left and Right motors. Beyond that, it’s just wheels and tires. Chairs using this VSI controller are super easy to troubleshoot and repair.
@@astrosmell yes, and though I may make it sound pretty accessible to work on these things, I”ve had a lot of trial and error, frustration, and money spent on the wrong or broken parts. Now, based on previous experience as well as the chairs I ride, I can generally troubleshoot and fix them myself. But it has taken me a while to get here. I carry a toolkit with everything I need to work on my chair in the back of my seat so I won’t have to crawl out to the garage for tools. I also have replacement parts on hand. Also, some may not know that if insurance paid for the chair, they’ll probably pay for repair and even a rental ride while it’s in the shop. Clare, Is this a brand new chair with new batteries, or is it new to you. Sounds like a battery issue. If you check the batteries and they are good, you should test the charger next. Batteries will go bad in six months if they are not kept up. Frank 352 999 4477
Using a multimeter check each battery. Look for 12.3 ish volts on each. Of course if the batteries are hooked up incorrectly, they can produce only 12 v to the module, you should be getting 24+ Volts to the module. Also it is possible to have 1 bad battery, that will effect the system the same as 2 bad batteries will. Frank
Most times the joystick is giving an error code, look up the troubleshooting process for your particular chair with your particular joystick. Most of the times it will self-diagnose. My mpv4 powers up input the levers to drive and when the joystick is engaged in any direction it doesn't move and a soft momentary hum is audible below. No codes are thrown and after cleaning all connections it remains the same. I at a loss here. Any suggestions?
