generally the biggest problem is making it stand out against their other IPs by going full dark horror with the crushing atmosphere of despair that it needs, while also keeping the zippy nature of the controls. there's lots of pitfalls in designing a Quake reboot that might end up making it feel too much like a Doom Eternal sequel, and it deserves so much more. that said, it's not impossible. so long as they don't just follow the money and try to really make it its best self, and, well, it is Bethesda now, so...
@@alansvartr I have faith in id Software. Bethesda has far less of the time constraints they used to because they're now with Microsoft which has learned from rushing Sea of Thieves. Games are now given the time they need. They delayed Halo by a whole year, for example.

I totally agree. It would be amazing if ID software and Bethesda did a reboot. Quake is an awesome series. I own Quake Remastered on PS4 PRO and I got to say, omg it is so much better. The game looks so clean, even on consoles (I rather play on PC) but honestly it still looks gorgeous on consoles. With added expansions and mods with smooth gameplay and great controls, definitely worth getting on any platform for 10 bucks, hell yes! Rip and tear all over again! 😈🤘

Quake changed my life... went on to build games for a living and truly believe without John Carmack we would not have all the 3D and multiplayer we have today, . I still remember strafing for the first time in quake and that sway it had... absolutely MIND BLOWING. it started a whole new era in gaming. Quake 1/2/3 are all on my mount rushmore of gaming.
I love the simplicity of older shooters like Quake, even Halo to an extent. Just pick up and play, easy to learn hard to master. No special abilities or heroes here, just fast-paced FPS action.
The thing I never liked about HALO was the shields, it was like a cheap way of not showing blood in a game, also being a PC gamer it felt like I'd been there and done that when console gamers were just getting their first taste of it .

If there's one thing Bethesda still has my respect for, it's taking damn good care of ID's games. We already saw doom 1 and 2 get great remasters, 2016 and eternal happened after years of silence from the franchise, and now quake is remastered.

This actually did break Quake, the new rendering system caused some kind of issue with the physics calculations which in turn made movement controls really strange and floaty. There were threads about disabling it which made a huge difference. The actual visual updates are pretty good and tasteful, though, but it's going to need a patch or two to iron out some bugs. At the same time, sourceports seem to still work out of the same folder, it was a free update, and Quake on Steam was pretty broken anyway, so it's not really a big deal.
I bought without hesitation, even includes the N64 version. The music alone brings me back...thus game moves so quickly and has such a menacing and original soundtrack..the soundtrack alone, is worth 10$

They’ll probably release most of them after this like quake 2 and four and hopefully arena! I hope they re release quake 2 on the n64 like doom 64 because that game had the same name as quake 2 but almost anyone who’s plaid it will agree it was far my superior to the actual release from the vibe even down to the map then hopefully QUAKE 2016 (being the doom 2016 treatment) hoping at least but who knows they could just not do anything after this :/

They should just take the original Quake and remake it in Doom Eternal’s engine. The perfect FPS game... not too complicated, realistic graphics, a hint of nostalgia.
Finally I can play this on a modern computer without having the issues with the soundtrack and anything else related to the old steam release. The Update is awesome
I bought the game about 5 days ago and been playing a bit each night haha. I had it as a kid and never finished it, too scary. Doom Eternal has got me flying through it, untouchable
@@distortions1 2016 (and Doom 3) was very light on story and kept a lot of it in logs that were entirely optional. The gameplay was great. Oh yeah, Quake has a story too
@@distortions1 The dashing was in Eternal. Now Eternal is kiiinda fun to me but 2016 is solid, far simpler and in my opinion better for replay value. I wasn't as big of a fan of Eternal or the story/shift in tone to something more cartoony and Blockbuster-esque. I'm really only referring to the 2016 game here

Geez, Bethesda doesn't know what they've got. Promoting Quake as "a dark fantasy FPS that inspires today's retro shooters" vastly undersells its place amongst the greatest and most important games of all time. If you were into gaming on any platform in the mid 1990s, you remember how highly anticipated, hyped, and revered Quake was for its revolutionary 3d technology and insanely fast paced action. Most importantly, it was the first massively popular online multiplayer game, and it singlehandedly created e-sports.
Personally I'm a Quake II girl but Quake I is awesome too and hopefully this gets us closer to a Quake II remaster (which would kill me.) I'm so freaking excited! This is literally my childhood.
Been playing quake on and off for years and it's actually fucking insane how good it feels as well. Arguably has better movement than most fps games out now.

A lot of people seem to have expected a brand new game which to be honest was an unrealistic expectation given that Doom Eternal has barely wrapped development of its DLC packs less than half a year ago. Maybe we will see a proper Quake reboot someday (fingers crossed), but for what it's worth I think this re-release is the second best thing that could have happened after a new game announcement. Hopefully the mod support and crossplay will allow Q1 to thrive once again
id doesn't have to be involved necessarily, it's not like Doom's production could have been cutting into that. Heck, the new levels for this release were by MachineGames.
The new DOOMs are essentially Quake reboots. It would be a matter of skinning the current game. Still would like to see the dark fantasy setting taking place.

It creates such a captivating glow when you shoot and blast the nightmarish Creatures to pieces in strange gloomy Places of a mysterious, unexplainable, dark realm; & doing it all in a rushing but flowing motion!
I lolled at “crossplay” thinking about those poor console gamers, not knowing how they died all of a sudden, as their killer circlejumps by their fresh, bloodied gibs.
Here's the thing though: even PC players of the day didn't know how they died half of the time. Quake skill gap has always been brutal. Besides, if anything, things might not be so bad now. I can assure you *actual* Quake World players won't be taking a blind bit of notice towards this Bethesda/Nightdive release, as cool as it is. Finally, this may be me making an assumption about you here but console controls have come a long way since '96. All that said, I still cannot stand cross-peripheral multiplayer but I'm still grateful for this release. Hopefully the player population will last longer than a week!

I remember when this game first came out, my PC could barely run it... something like 20 FPS. IIRC it was one of the first games that had actual 3d character models instead of 2d sprites.

I used to play this game back on my dads old PC when I was like 3 years old. My dad taught me everything there is to know about Quake, and now the fact that they brought it back like that? I’m absolutely amazed, and happy. Ten bucks, and you get all the expansions, including a new one? That’s a deal in my opinion. And I’m so glad they brought it to console too! This is the first impulse purchase I’ve ever made, and probably the only one, because Quake is a part of me. Thank you Bethesda. 💖

Got my hands on it yesterday, and it is as fun as it was 20+ years ago. Love the dark/gothic atmosphere, this was one of the most unique things about Quake back then. Probably the AI could be a bit more enhanced, but that would ruin the oldschool vibe.
I'm actually begging them to reboot quake with modern graphics. People thought doom was something, well they will learn quake was far bigger when it came to inspiring a hell of a lot of games we have today tbh.
I really like this. It's thanks to these rereleases that I, and many others, were able to experience games such as classic doom for the first time. I'm excited to see what Quake has in store.

As soon as I saw this I ran straight to my PC, hit play on Quake and sure enough there it is ready to go. Genuinely really impressed on the whole, although the way nightmare difficultly works seems to have been tweaked, the enemies no longer spam you with long distance attacks and you can only max your health out at 50? I think the movement is ever so slightly off too but not enough to ruin it. Minor gripes aside I'm having a blast, I won my first online death match back after 2 decades like a boss, I love this game beyond words.
Just opened Steam an hour ago and noticed this. No complaints so far, it pretty much feels like playing QuakeSpasm, only with achievements and a bunch of extra logos at the start (tons of love to Nightdive for this and Forsaken and many other fantastic 90s PC game remasters!). For a free upgrade it's a great treat, but what I'm really hoping is that this will get more new people hooked on this game and ideally the whole series. Remember, Quake Live still has a whole lot of people playing regularly!

@@basseman4239 I though of making Quake 1 reboot have Machine gun, shotgun and nailgun at the start plus melee, and you can find upgrades for the items and Ranger that make him better at Operation Splitgate. Like some of the cosmetics in QC are actually good item modifiers and so on. Knight allows more damage resist vs melee, Death knight vs fire, stuff like this. oh and melee modifiers, probalby via rune upgrades.
If they do remake, I hope they make it *nothing* like Doom Eternal was. The last thing I want is to see non-linear level exploration and puzzles replaced with a bunch of overly linear level design and pointless platforming.
I loved quake, and still do. It's long overdue a remake in the vain of doom. I think there's such a market gap for this. Even though yeah I don't care about the graphics, I'll happily play it like this, there are many who won't, and they would be missing out completely, remaking it would bring the opportunity to give it some modern comforts, bring the old crowd back for more and a whole new audience. Either way it's time to get quaking bacon

I hope they re release quake 2 on the n64 like doom 64 because that game had the same name as quake 2 but almost anyone who’s plaid it will agree it was far my superior to the actual release from the vibe even down to the map then hopefully QUAKE 2016 (being the doom 2016 treatment) hoping at least but who knows they could just not do anything after this :/

@@distortions1 The dashing was in Eternal. Now Eternal is kiiinda fun to me but 2016 is solid, far simpler and in my opinion better for replay value. I wasn't as big of a fan of Eternal or the story/shift in tone to something more cartoony and Blockbuster-esque. I'm really only referring to the 2016 game here

Geez, Bethesda doesn't know what they've got. Promoting Quake as "a dark fantasy FPS that inspires today's retro shooters" vastly undersells its place amongst the greatest and most important games of all time.
If you were into gaming on any platform in the mid 1990s, you remember how highly anticipated, hyped, and revered Quake was for its revolutionary 3d technology and insanely fast paced action.
Most importantly, it was the first massively popular online multiplayer game, and it singlehandedly created e-sports.
Personally I'm a Quake II girl but Quake I is awesome too and hopefully this gets us closer to a Quake II remaster (which would kill me.) I'm so freaking excited! This is literally my childhood.

Quake was your fav game, you fell into a coma in the 90s, 30 years later you wake up, first thing you see - QUAKE REMASTER, you think "wow, technology hasn't improved much"
A lot of people seem to have expected a brand new game which to be honest was an unrealistic expectation given that Doom Eternal has barely wrapped development of its DLC packs less than half a year ago. Maybe we will see a proper Quake reboot someday (fingers crossed), but for what it's worth I think this re-release is the second best thing that could have happened after a new game announcement. Hopefully the mod support and crossplay will allow Q1 to thrive once again
id doesn't have to be involved necessarily, it's not like Doom's production could have been cutting into that. Heck, the new levels for this release were by MachineGames.

The new DOOMs are essentially Quake reboots. It would be a matter of skinning the current game. Still would like to see the dark fantasy setting taking place.

@@hylianchampion8867 this game IS the original, only difference is a 50 health limit on the highest difficulty (which won't matter much since you'll get deleted in about the same amount of shots), smooth graphics and extra DLC included, you'll do just fine friend 🙌

It's more generic in its worldbuilding and visuals, and a Space Marine shooting cyborgs in alien facilities is less cool than a Ranger fighting abominable beasts in gothic castles.

This was one of my favourite games on the N64 when i was a kid. This and Goldeneye

Here's the thing though: even PC players of the day didn't know how they died half of the time. Quake skill gap has always been brutal.
Besides, if anything, things might not be so bad now. I can assure you *actual* Quake World players won't be taking a blind bit of notice towards this Bethesda/Nightdive release, as cool as it is.
Finally, this may be me making an assumption about you here but console controls have come a long way since '96.
All that said, I still cannot stand cross-peripheral multiplayer but I'm still grateful for this release. Hopefully the player population will last longer than a week!

I remember when this game first came out, my PC could barely run it... something like 20 FPS. IIRC it was one of the first games that had actual 3d character models instead of 2d sprites.

I used to play this game back on my dads old PC when I was like 3 years old. My dad taught me everything there is to know about Quake, and now the fact that they brought it back like that? I’m absolutely amazed, and happy. Ten bucks, and you get all the expansions, including a new one? That’s a deal in my opinion. And I’m so glad they brought it to console too!
This is the first impulse purchase I’ve ever made, and probably the only one, because Quake is a part of me.

Got my hands on it yesterday, and it is as fun as it was 20+ years ago. Love the dark/gothic atmosphere, this was one of the most unique things about Quake back then. Probably the AI could be a bit more enhanced, but that would ruin the oldschool vibe.
I'm actually begging them to reboot quake with modern graphics. People thought doom was something, well they will learn quake was far bigger when it came to inspiring a hell of a lot of games we have today tbh.
I really like this. It's thanks to these rereleases that I, and many others, were able to experience games such as classic doom for the first time. I'm excited to see what Quake has in store.

Holy crap. I was just thinking how amazing it would be if both consoles and pc got a new quake or at least a remaster and this trailer just drops.
As soon as I saw this I ran straight to my PC, hit play on Quake and sure enough there it is ready to go. Genuinely really impressed on the whole, although the way nightmare difficultly works seems to have been tweaked, the enemies no longer spam you with long distance attacks and you can only max your health out at 50? I think the movement is ever so slightly off too but not enough to ruin it. Minor gripes aside I'm having a blast, I won my first online death match back after 2 decades like a boss, I love this game beyond words.

Just opened Steam an hour ago and noticed this. No complaints so far, it pretty much feels like playing QuakeSpasm, only with achievements and a bunch of extra logos at the start (tons of love to Nightdive for this and Forsaken and many other fantastic 90s PC game remasters!). For a free upgrade it's a great treat, but what I'm really hoping is that this will get more new people hooked on this game and ideally the whole series. Remember, Quake Live still has a whole lot of people playing regularly!
I hope they give us Quake 3 remastered too!

@@basseman4239 I though of making Quake 1 reboot have Machine gun, shotgun and nailgun at the start plus melee, and you can find upgrades for the items and Ranger that make him better at Operation Splitgate. Like some of the cosmetics in QC are actually good item modifiers and so on. Knight allows more damage resist vs melee, Death knight vs fire, stuff like this. oh and melee modifiers, probalby via rune upgrades.

The games are two different for that to happen.
In many ways Doom 2 was an expansion of Doom 1.
Quake 2 is a full on evolution of Quake 1
I loved quake, and still do. It's long overdue a remake in the vain of doom. I think there's such a market gap for this. Even though yeah I don't care about the graphics, I'll happily play it like this, there are many who won't, and they would be missing out completely, remaking it would bring the opportunity to give it some modern comforts, bring the old crowd back for more and a whole new audience.
Either way it's time to get quaking bacon
