The black of this locomotive is pretty much a wartime colour that remained with British Railways until 1958, when we got a lot of green diesel multiple units.

On the topic of decoders, I absolutely love the Train O Matic (Except their stupid default of applying inertia off and shunt modes to F3 and F4!) I was looking for a compact decoder with high current function outputs, and these fit the bill at 200mA, limited to 400mA max.

The 10800 is no oil painting, but is an interesting locomotive. It’s one I had never heard of before, and I have worked at a heritage railway until retiring this year.

Another expert review, Jenny. Heljan has to be applauded for tackling the more obscure loco classes. I have a class 15 ( as I found a photo of one running on the erstwhile Waveney Valley Line, which used to run through the town where I live), and am pretty happy with it. However, the 10800 (known as the Wonder Engine) seems to be a step up, although there still seems to be the odd quality issue.
Personally, my favourite Heljan model is the class 14 (2nd batch). Mine's in the light blue NCB Mardy colliery livery.

Good looking mover. I can see the resemblance to American switchers made by EMD.

This particular locomotive was actually the father or mother of several different locomotives of a more modern type.

knowing that the bogies were repainted black I would of done that almost immediately. Why does 10800 not have yellow fronts?

Early BR black pre dates yellow warning ends by a decade or so. As far as I'm aware, only a few black shunters carried yellow/black chevron ends on black livery. Class 01s 01001 and 01002 even carried TOPS numbers on their black livery..

Yellow warning panels, and eventually full yellow ends, weren't seen until well into the "green diesel" era, and started to appear around 1962, as a hi-viz safety feature. Oddly, such panels are now no longer a statutory requirement, which is a retrograde step, IMO.

It’s the diesel version of the Bulleid Q1. It may be an ugly bugger, but it’s prototypically accurate.

There appears to be an awful lot of sloppiness in terms of finishing and fittings; and as much as it’s a beautiful locomotive, I’d be very reluctant to part with my hard earned pocket money and purchase one.
