I own a 2022 Harley road glide standard that I’ve dumped the regular upgrades into (exhaust, bars, cam, audio, lighting) and I love it. I’m a harley guy. But… I just bought a barn found 2001 Yamaha road star 1600 for $1,000 to build up into a cholo style bike. And damn dude… the road star rides smoother and is more comfortable at 23 years old! I’m really digging it. It blows my mind to look at what they are side by side and the price difference between the two and what they can do

    This will be long:
That's a beautiful VTX, you have done a great job with it. I am sure you have been told that many times. I have two Harleys, a classic Triumph, two Hondas, and a Yamaha. My Harleys are a 1987 EVO, and a 2007 CVO Electra. I have been riding almost 45 years. I am not a brand fan boy, I don't have a brand bias. Harley isn't nearly all Chinese and Victory and Indian are nowhere near 100% US made. Repeating those untruths does not make them true. There is lots of less than accurate info on that matter on the internet.
One thing I have to point out again and again is that the only motorcycle people consistently compare every other motorcycle with is Harley Davidson, including in this video. Even the sport bike riders habitually do it over and over and over again. In fact they relish doing it. That in itself speaks volumes. Your VTX is beautifully done, and of course imitates a Harley. Honda does not make, has never made, and never will make the bike you built. That as well speaks volumes. Harley didn't pay for any "VTX patent". You can look up patents and trademarks, it is public information. No need to theorize such a thing. And no, it isn't a matter of an NDA either. Honda is very different from Harley, but they both make decisions based on the market and the money. The VTX1800 is just one model, not a whole brand like Harley. Simply put, regardless of the fact that many like the 1800, Honda simply moved on and they are doing just fine. There are numerous well loved models that Honda stopped making over the years. The fact is that Harley directly had everything to do with the birth of the VTX1800, and all of the related models, but very little directly to do with why any of them end production.
The same is true of Victory. The fact is that Harley directly had everything to do with the birth of Victory, but very little directly to do with why they ended production. And the same with Indian. Indian died in 1953. They failed, Harley is still going. The various "Indian" motorcycles produced since then merely "identify" as Indian. The fact is that Harley directly had everything to do with the birth of the various Indians since 1953, but very little directly to do with why they ended production. The current Indian exists only because Harley still existed. They never would have resurrected it and designed a new motorcycle to imitate Indian if Harley had not been around anymore. It would not have been a viable venture without the Harley market.
Harley does more than serve their niche market, they tow along with them a huge chunk of the motorcycle industry, even all over the world. The culture built around the brand exists in Europe and Asia. Every major manufacturer has been chasing Harley for decades. Even smaller brands like Moto Guzzi and Triumph catered to the American style over the years and created models directly addressing the Harley market. Triumph didn't just do it cosmetically either, they even re-phased their cranks to give them a more Harley-like idle. Seriously.
My 110SE CVO does get out of its own way, I don't need to race anybody. It's stock except for mufflers and air filter. I bought the bike for $7,300 five years ago when it booked for $13,900. You can drop a 170 HP crate motor in a Harley, or you can put a Harley front end and bags on a Honda, as you like. Comparing them? That's an adventure. But lets compare. Mine is a stock 2007 1800cc Harley. Comparable in horsepower and torque with yours. I took probably 150 pounds off of my bike. You added weight to your bike. I am also 5 foot 6. Race? On paper the outcome is predictable. I dig my CVO, but I don't have anywhere near the labor of love you have invested in creating yours. That would be more invested in my 87 EVO Softail chopper.
Oh, and I have 107k mi on my CVO and counting. I ride it about 10k per month. I have a friend with 340k on an 07 Street Glide, and the motor has never been opened. The reliability of Honda is overestimated and the reliability of Harley is underestimated, habitually. This isn't 1975.
I haven't owned a four wheel vehicle in more than 10 years. I ride.
Serious question: If you could only have one bike, and had to own it, and ride it for decades, which would it be? I mean ride it, not just recreate or have a hobby. I know my answer. It would be a Harley. Specifically it would be my 1987 EVO, not the CVO. Why? Longevity, simplicity, parts availability, economics, and other real world practical matters like that. If I blow the electronic ignition after the apocalypse I can easily adapt points from a car with basic hand tools, and it has a carburetor, no computer to control the mixture.

For a while. Then the bike gets older, Honda stops making it, parts dry up, and the aftermarket isn't anywhere near what Harley has. Merch? Like shirts and stuff? Who cares? I mean, I know lots of people are brand "fan boys" but I can't live that way.

I have an 18 ultra limited and a 97 Yamaha royal star. The Yamaha has been with me through a divorce, hard times, and everything in between. Have owned it since 2003. I sold it to buy my first Harley, 2000 road king, and bought it back when some one screwed it up. I love what my Harley does but it’s not the only brand I will own. Want a Kawasaki vaquero just because I like one. I also want a road glide and another road king. It’s all about variations and I never cared what you ride as long as you ride

I'd take the Honda so I don't have to look for the "large dealership network in case I have a problem on the road...." Honda and Yamaha are consistently the top two brands in terms of reliability. And yes, I've ridden HD personally and professionally as a motor officer.

  • @hoopin4you

The reason Honda stopped making the 1800 was due to low sales, starting roughly around the middle of its production run around 2005. The 1300 was outperforming the 1800 in sales, and so many 1800s were sitting at dealerships until hefty price reductions started getting them sold...people got great deals on brand new ones. I sat on an 1800 and a 1300 back in '03 when I was shopping for my very first street bike, and the 1300 fit me better & felt better with the lower center of gravity. I still have my '04 1300C that I bought brand new, and it's been a bagger since around '09. I have since purchased a '99 Electra Glide Classic with a sidecar, and my wife has owned an '07 Ultra Classic and now a '10 Ultra, and the HDs do ride better than the VTX. I did a suspension upgrade, though, and the 1300 rides much better than when it was stock. Race Tech gold valve emulators and springs up front, Progressive 444 shocks out back and a SuperBrace fork stabilizer bar make it so much nicer.
I have ridden RGs, Ultras and some other models during HD demo days, and I gotta say the RG is pretty sweet. Nicely done on yours!

I don’t care what someone rides. I like them all. I almost bought a Honda and a Yamaha at one time. I finally were able to buy first Harley in 2011 and have been hooked ever since. For me it’s the looks, sound and vibration. If it doesn’t vibrate I don’t want it. I would love to own a gold wing the new ones look pretty dam good. People who trash Harley are the ones who normally can’t afford one.

      I started on a 2001 Honda Shadow 750 Spirit. 2nd bike was a 2009 HD Sportster 883 Low. 3rd bike was a 2007 Honda Shadow 1100. My current and 4th bike is a 2020 HD Softail Standard.
Even though I own and ride a Harley every day, I talk shit about the company and the bike. There's a lot of cut corners and laziness involved with these bikes, as well as a false image.
I guess the one and only reason I am on a Harley is the customization. I have always been a hot rodder and a mechanic; I don't have the ability to leave anything alone mechanically. The amount of things I can do to a Harley just far outweighs other brands.
That said, the new (2022-current) Indian Chief really has me close to selling my FXST

And there is the fan boy example. Not all people fall for marketing. Its not about affording . Its about not paying too much for a product because of the sales pitch . Goldwings cost as much as a lot of HDs and there are a lot of them out there.

I'll be real with you. I'm not a motorcycle guy. Bit for the past few years I've been wanting to be one.
That being said. I know a few guys are about that life. And the Honda vs Harley debate is real.
I've decided that I will go the Honda route. Strictly for the price benefit. And I've seen some nice ones. Yours included. Hondas can look just as hard as Harleys.
Just wanted you to know I enjoyed your video. And it helped me make up my mind to pull the trigger on a VTX. And I'm making it a bagger. I'm a mechanic. So I hope to do most of the work myself.

I've been riding for about ten years. I've wanted a harley for the last twenty-five years. And I've attempted to buy a harley several times. But they're always too expensive and I've always been advised to avoid spending that type of money on a bike that I would have to spend more money on once I bought it. I wound up with the Honda shadow first, then a scout, then the chieftain.
I am completely happy with my choices. However, I still want a harley someday. Maybe that itch will go away. Because harleys are not getting cheaper.

Nothing wrong with any of the big 4 Japanese bike manufacturers. Patriotism should be part of the selection process as well. It is in my home. There's no proof that any parts from Malaysia have made it onto our a.erican purchased Harleys. That being said the new Indians are 100% American made with zero argument. Im 52 years old and owning the fastest bike is not at the top on my list. My road glide is a cornering beast 2 up. My friends constantly say I'm going to die cornering so hard but that's banter from guys losing pace with me. At the end of the day the bike an individual loves is the best bike made. The only way I get any say in what another rides is if I'm buying them a bike. The biggest problem for harley is that there's a lot of fake posers who ride them. Narcissistic jack wagons that bought the bike for the image. Those bikes get traded in 3 years old and have 2,500 miles on them. Great deal for the used purchaser.... how comfortable is that VTX Honda for long rides? I just rode to Sturgis in August from Oregon 2 up. Day one was 760 miles to Butte Montana and day 2 was Butte to Sturgis at 510 miles. My old lady on the back was on the rag and didn't complain one time. I didn't know until we got to Sturgis and then I felt bad that she was forced to sit back there so long like that. But she said if we still had the old Electra Glide there's no way, but the road glide limited is co comfortable she said she could have done a 1,000 mile day as passenger. Works for us.... paid too much but no mechanical issues to date and she runs strong for a HD.
