Hey I’m just rewatching this video rn, and I heard you mention that you wanted to make a video about the role that the nose tackle has in the modern NFL. I would really love to watch a video discussing that. Ik you guys are currently working hard on making great in-depth scouting videos, so no rush.
Big facts. I noticed that too, I’m for sure using it going forward. I love it when content creators can come up with terms such as “coverage agnostic” because it invokes so many more layers of depth to the understanding of a style/approach that you wouldn’t get from simply saying “he’s averse to/he prefers to…”
It doesn't matter Lou could be a headcoach rn if he wanted but for some reason that has not been disclosed to the public he has not spoken to any teams it's wierd but rn it's all up to him and he wants to stay with the Bengals although it's different from Dan Quinn cause Dan knows Mccarthy is gonna get fired eventually
@ASAP2424 your out your damn mind lmao If we held on to Marvin Lewis for 10 years were definitely keeping Zac plus Burrow wants Zac to be the HC so he's not going anywhere
Love this breakdown. Always nice to discuss coverage schemes and how a defense can make a qb uncomfortable from the secondary and not just from the rush.
Looking forward to the NT video. You stated it exactly: the right one, even in the modern pass happy NFL, can be critical, because he is the key to the run defense in a light box.
Reader needs all the love and deserves even more, he often gets overlooked bc of that offense but I feel he is one of the best if not the best nose bull tackle in the game today
Def one of the best space stuffing DTs against the run. Granted there are more versatile DTs who can play both run and interior penetration but Reader's impact keeps the opposing run offense to be as honest as they can be.
Great video. I've acknowledge his genius since the latter half of last season and the best part is he's shown more of it this season. Great weekly game planner against various opponents and in comparison to some of the DC flunkies who stay stagnant, he's just as amazing adjusting in the 2nd half. He knows the guys in his depth charts to use in specific situations to execute and take away match ups. Like Joseph Ossai who sees a lot of action vs the Chiefs.
I love this D. An essential element is to create what appears to be chaos to the QB, resulting in delay of their throw. I see the D as combining transient man coverage, or what appears man coverage, with zone. The hard part is having the individual D players recognize the release points to transition from man to zone, and zone to man. Maybe that is the reference to “pass off coverage.” One advantage of this difficulty in transitions by D players is that some inevitable confusion within the D will also generate confusion for the QB. That confusion also makes game planning more difficult for the opponent (e.g. reading ad hoc decisions versus repeated schemes is much tougher). Mixing erratic blitzes to squash QB complacency with “I’ll figure this out in a moment” is very helpful.
Wasn't Awuzie injured before the Bengals/Chiefs game this year? Also, it looked like Apple was playing that coverage at 12:30 "behind" on purpose. I know people love to clown on Apple, but he shows up enough to contribute at a high level from time to time.
This was a excellent vid! Great breakdown of the mad scientist himself. It blows me away lou hasn't had one interview like wtf. He's a wizard just like Andy Reid is a offensive wizard. Just glad though. Fingers crossed 🤞 we get to keep him for another year. Who dey!

Most definitely. It's a hybrid defense mostly and bilichick was a master at it. No wonder brady and Bill have so many rings. When u have an elite qb and a great defensive mind coupled with being a great hc that's when u will see 6 championships I think lol.
BB is the standard for how to make your defense be 'amorphous'. One reason why even young QBs get stumped going against him is because they think they get the look they want but it turns into something entirely different post snap. And BB gets it right in key situations like 3rd down.
great vid. However, and it's a minor detail, at 5:15, the person who almost picked Mahomes in week 13 was rookie Cam Taylor Britt. Awuzie got hurt got hurt for the season against Cleveland in October
The league views Anarumo as Vic Fangio 2.0. That's why he's not getting any HC interviews. I hope the Bengals give him a big raise and keep him longterm.
i consider myself a student of the game and analyze and watch the all 22. you are amazing with what you do. straight up impressive video you have my like and subscription.
If you notice, the Bengals defense overall seemed to improve once Reader got back. Having him up the middle is huge. He clogs up running lanes and cab out pressure in a passer along with Hubbard and Hendrickson.
What I’m getting from this is that you better get a big lead early and hope your defense can hold on through the second half against the Bengals. This defense isn’t gonna let you keep it going in the second half.
This defense is also great with take aways and pressuring with 4 (or even 3 vs Mahomes). Because they are adept at showing the opposing QB a different look post snap. So the QB has to hold onto the ball longer which they gotta make an off structure play otherwise the pressure does come home. Cool thing is against a team without an elaborate pass attack, they will switch up and go base defense and take you on from there (see the Ravens matchup). Against the Bills the Bengals defense just pressured with 4 guys well enough so they didn't need to go with 3. And just mask coverages to make it even harder for Allen who was already struggling with with short route decision making.
As a Texans fan, seeing DJ Reader become a stud brings me nothing but pain. Although I'm also happy because if we had kept him we would have just ruined him.
Unpredicatable. I've said it for decades; specifically going back to the early Marvin Lewis days when everyone in the stadium knew what the Bengals were going to = what plays they were going to run. Also, this sounds counter-intuitive but is, nevertheless, true = In order to be unpredictable, you must first be predictable. This applies more to pitching in Baseball, but fits for football, too.
I feel like the chiefs could get the Cinci D out of some of these drop 8 looks if they would run some draw plays being that usually that front 3 is with the 2 ends and 1 tackle. Andy Reid is so pass happy though so this is a great scheme to slow the chiefs down. In addition, the chiefs would be best to let Mahomes get to the line early in tomorrows game, and give the cinci D different snap counts to hopefully make them show early their looks, especially keying on Mike Hilton when he wants to come down and be a blitzer/rotating safety.
Interesting to see how much the Bengals will adapt to the Chiefs having Pacheco as their running back. Obviously can't put as many eggs in their excellent pass defense basket. Bengals have a very solid team though so they should be fine
Lou can stop just about any rushing attack. Lou is not worried about the cheifs running backs when u have patrick mahomes under center lol. U would think they will run more tomorrow but we'll c. Reid loves to pass and usually people stay who they are. I do think he will run a Lil more but I think he will be triggered to go away from it.
I feel like, in general, the Bengals offense is incredibly underrated. We don't have star power of any kind in most areas of our defense, other than some standouts that put themselves slightly above their piers, however our defense is enough to genuinely help the offense win games. That's all you can really ask for. With the additions of the 2023 NFL draft, we might actually have a real shot at having a noteworthy defense after all.

A one legged Mahomes was throwing passes to an injured Kelce, Drop prone MVS, rookie Sky, and a ST guy who literally has more tackles than catches in his career....and the only forced turnover the Bengals D got (the entire game) was on a weird freak flub where Mahomes straight up dropped the ball while throwing it. Nah I think the actual NFL viewers who watch the game and the tape are well informed of Lou's intentions. The 'fans' who gotta talk about anything BUT the tape and strategy will underrate what Big Lou has been doing. Cuz he's been the most consistent force of this Bengals team on a weekly basis, especially when Zac Taylor and Callahan's offense just stalls out and they can't dump TDs.
On the wheel route, he was supposed to check down to the RB. If Kelce was not there or Hill, he was supposed to go to the RB it appears. Andy designed that play well, Pat forgot his checkdown.
The play at 11 minutes in. Are you just being misleading or what? That play wasn't designed to be cut back. He was forced to cut back because Reader didn't let the offensive lineman cut him off. The cut back was the RBs only hope, but even that wasn't going to let him go anywhere.
