    It is a shame that there are not as many record players like that in this day and age. I really like the Thorens Symphony.

    it would be so wonderful seeing this machine in a newer video with better picture and sound-quality... it's still a outstanding device

    After several tries I think Position 1 is for singleside play and 2 is for both side playing. The reel with P is for a mechanical delaying (Pause) function between two disks.
    Behind the turntable, left of the anchor point of the pickuparm there is a L shaped rod which feels the size of the disk. Mine had the same erratic action before I made the WD40 treatment.

    Coool, i did the WD40 part but sonething goes wrong, it starts good, it reads the first side and then after the vinil drops the pick up never makes it to the vinil and it goes down just a bit short on a rubber black spot.
    There are 2 things i don't understand good either, a switch on the side that has 3 positions: 1, P and 2 and a knob just close to it with some numbers...
    Can you help me sorting it out?
    Thanx a lot!and thanx for the video!
    Cheers,
    Piercarlo.

    Yes, self restored.
    Some WD40 oil on the mechanical parts, new rubber needle carriers in the pickup and shielded wires in the pickup-arm will give a lot improvement.

    NOW I`VE SEEN EVERYTHING, a turntable that does`nt drop the record to play it, the tonearm actually comes up to the record in mid air and plays it. Damn I miss past technology when people had to use their brains to invent cool stuff like this

    The needle on that is a nail, it is destroying the records, as nice as it looks, this is damaging the records, I would not use it at all.

    • @HenriTheLast
      @HenriTheLast  5 років тому +1

      No, that's a special needle from Thorens, a Sapphire with a V-shaped Shaft to adapt the backward playing on the upper plate. You could use a normal steel needle, but that is really a record killer. The wight of the pickup is greatly reduced with a spring guiding the tonearm.

      @@HenriTheLast I am wondering if you could advise where you got the special needle for the CD 53. Also can you provide a copy of the manual if you got one?
      Thanks George

    • @HenriTheLast
      @HenriTheLast  2 роки тому +1

      The special needle came with this CD50. A second I found per chance on a Thorens CD40 from the junkyard, years later. Meanwhile I got some good results from jukebox needles with Saphire tips (Seeburg, Wurlitzer) from the early 40ties found on Ebay. Because they are straight I had to experiment how deep to screw tight in the needle holder. It should protrude less than a standard steel needle. Too long they get in resonance and squeal. Too short the sounddynamic is affected.

      Sorry, have no manual. If it operates erratically after a period of no use. The Problem was every time the velocity tip who triggers the mechanism situated underneath the lower platter. Do not oil the friction point, only a good cleanig.

      The CD53 you mentioned is a further devlopment of this CD50. It can play at 78, 45. 33 speed but not schellack and microgroove intermixed. I never saw one in real live, only on UA-cam. On some pictures it looks like a ronette 105 pickup and needle is used.
