The term, “running to stand still” comes to mind… what motivates us is what defines us. My father was absent and my mother ran from one fire to the next during my childhood. A decade ago I realized I needed to give myself the home I always wanted as a kid. I moved to a small town on the Oregon coast. I bought a neglected old craftsman house which I’ve turned into a home. At 48, I have a thriving business as a contractor, a beautiful 2 year old son and a home I just recently paid in full. I resisted the urge to flip my house and I am incredibly thankful for the life I’ve been able to build by staying the course. As the old saying goes, “slow and steady wins the race.”

Don't be too quick to move. My company did a large layoff and offered some engineers the choice of move 3 states away at company expense or take the layoff package. A large number of them moved and within a few years, the company just laid them off again. Now they are embedded there with no help to move back if they wanted too. I, on the other hand said no way and go ahead and lay me off then and I'll find another job here. Well, turns out they thought long and hard and cancelled my layoff. Bluff called. Don't forget how hard it is on your kids! The social impact on them can be life changing!

Real-wages, adjusted for inflation, have not risen appreciably in 55ish years. That's a fact. The same time Housing, Education, and HealthCare costs have exploded. Most Americans are now largely geographically land-locked due to SES. Mobility is not what it once was. Sadly.

I'll tell you what got me to move to the other side of the world once:
      1. Took a vacation to a country we loved
      2. Returned home, created a LinkedIn job alert for openings in said country, just cuz
      3. Thought no more of it, because there was no way they'd ever need someone like me over there
      4. Alert pinged like 9 months later
      5. Applied, cause why not
      6. Got hired, moved, had the adventure of a lifetime (and just to be clear: you can't have an adventure without conflict, struggle, setbacks, fear, etc.) and eventually came back home
Why I'm sharing this: step 2 cost me nothing, I did it on a whim, but it was what set the whole thing in motion. You can do it (or something like it) right now, in 5 minutes. Maybe nothing will come of it, but you'll have lost 5 minutes at most.

@@josiahamaze if you dig a tree up every few years and move it around it will never develop a root strong enough to go deep and find water in a dry year and it will never be able to have roots wide enough to stand up in a strong storm. By paying for my castle by saving the expense of always moving I have the money to survive an economic drought should one arise and by setting strong roots in my community I can stand and even thrive during economic storms. I have the resources to visit anywhere I want to but still maintain a stable home base to work and prosper from.

@@garykidd4468 Well put makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately I didn't have much of a choice since I was a kid but I do believe if my philosophy is right (foundation) no matter where I build my castle it'll stand strong and if I operate thru my spirit everywhere I go I will bear the fruits that will get me thru the drought. At least that's how I've made it this far without spite or anger in my heart. I appreciate you taking the time to elaborate. I just bought my first house an I'm currently conflicted because I'd like to settle down here but due to unfortunate hardships I'm struggling to catch up on mortgage and bills. I don't know how to ask for help not because I don't have any but because I feel ashamed to have to ask. Maybe that's what the moving did to me that I can't understand.

I already own my home where I live, own my cabin, and i'm pretty much debt free here plus my senior parents are dependent on me. Sure I won't have a mansion or the newest vehicle every year but that's just material items that mean nothing in the end. I chose to stay here because time with family can't be bought back.

Fortunately I married a wonderful American woman some years ago and we will be moving to the midwest in due time. We are moving to escape the failed utopia that once was, as well as moving toward opportunity and adventure. We know it won't be perfect but when the difference in housing is 500k and your monthly grocery bills for two are $1300, it really is a no brainer. We moved 7 times by the time I was in 5th grade, then again as I was graduating from high school in Arizona. My older brother and I both joined the Army, then wandered the world for a couple of years. He settled into a little condo in Phoenix, married the girl next door and raised a beautiful family, moving to a house down the street, then another a few blocks away. They've lived within a mile or so of that condo for almost 40 years now. Deep roots. Solid friendships. Stable family. I on the other hand, kept moving, changing careers, living and working from Florida to the Aleutian Islands, and numerous points between. I married and raised a family, but kept moving -- Arizona to Washington to Virginia, and back home to Arizona. I see pros and cons to both. I have loved everywhere I've lived, but know it was harder for the kids, and hard on us when they came to call distant places home. We've finally settled now in the home of our dreams, thanks to a lucky home purchase during a depressed market, and a lucky home sale during a booming market. My advice: Experience new places and new people. Stay out of debt. Sock away money when you can, and buy land when you can. They're not making any more of it.

By age 18 I'd lived 5 different places with my parents. Not far away from each other, I still went to the same schools, but it very much reflected the economy. Everything from a 4000sqft house to a 1200sqft apartment and then on again. They too had to fight the crazy interest rates of the 1980s. And so, we moved. Again.
Since then adventure has been pulling. Went 5000miles away to the PNW and back, that taught me a great deal, been around the country here with a stint to Germany. It all fell out of different circumstances, but wouldn't want to have been without very much of it. All of it has been a learning experience, though some teachings may not have materialized themselves until much later.
Have I struck it rich? Not in the material sense. But I've been fortunate enough to go places and meet people, that many probably wouldn't. I'll still call it a win and a rich life. I'm not supposed to bring anything with me from this life.

Howdy, I'm 73; born in 1951. My dad got out of the Navy after WWII, met my mother and they bought a nice GI Bill house for $7,000. I was one of 5 children. Growing up in the fabulous 50's and 60's was worth the trip. My mother never worked outside of the home and we were an All American Family. Gold was $35 an ounce. We weren't rich, but we were very blessed. My Dad was the shop teacher and the football, baseball coach at the high school. Our extended family was huge.

I've thought about moving deeper into the South, where men are still men and the sun still shines on old Craftsmen. But I'm pretty well set where I am for what I now think of as the sunset of my life.

These countries are massive with more opportunities. People fall through the cracks and get swallowed up without support. I spend many hours daily studying a large variety of UA-cam videos and the people often speak so slowly that when I change the play-speed to 2X I perfectly understand each word and get through the videos in half the time. As i play around on the job site during all phases of the job. Which also amounts to having a huge collection of tools. lol. What matters to me, is knowing my boss sees and knows the details. He knows, i see them too. So together we can cut out a ton of those, "not my job, moments, or, well that didn't work out as planned." Being in ministry, most of my moves have been in response to to externals. My grandmother spent her whole life, save five years, in a one block radius. She had a wide social circle and a rich life.

For many reasons, during the first several years of my marriage, we moved about every nine months. The longest move was from So. Colorado to Anchorage, AK in 1981. The roads through a large part of Canada were gravel and it was wintertime. Nine days on the road for that move. But it was worth it as I've been an Alaskan every since.

I was so blessed that I never had to move to support my family, I got a great job with a school district maintenance department, first working as an electrician, then switching to cabinetmaking/carpentry (same maintenance department). For 30 years I worked there and then worked a second job of building homes, additions, decks, electrical work, whatever to support my family. I always had work, thank God. This is my favorite channel. Thanks Scott for all your insight and wisdom.

Thanks, Scott! The young men of these days need a lot of shepherding. I didn’t appreciate it as a youngster, but learning to work and having a father who runs a business that has opportunities for participation, such as farming or something in the trades can give a child valuable life skills and build work ethic even if he chooses a different profession later in life.

I’ve been traveling 50 miles north everyday to the big city for 20 plus years now. Money and benefits are the 2 big reasons why…fortunately I’ve always had a company vehicle for most of this time…. Advantage is a cheaper cost of living 50 miles away from my work territory but a big down side is time… 8hr work day = 11hr day…I’ve missed a lot of family time but I’ve also been to provide for the family and save for a future……I’m in my 50’s now…. Kids are moving out and the last one is in college….. major bills are slowing down and still rolling in…yet stability is strong… so I’d say sacrifices can be worth the end results but you need to stay committed…… I highly suggest to guide people into working in the trades….

One thing I have come to learn more over time is that if you don't like where you live go find somewhere you do like to be. I have been stuck in a part of the country that I absolutely hate living in for many reasons mostly weather and the lack of outdoors to enjoy. And the flip side is if you really like where you live and see a money making opportunity somewhere else I say think it over. Your daily quality of life living somewhere you really enjoy being is far more important than the few dollars more you might get living somewhere you don't like being.

Mr. Sweetie and I always planned to move away for opportunity or novelty, but we bought a home in our childhood community and ended up staying within a mile or two of both sets of grandparents which wasn't as charming as it sounds. It was instructional, it was character building, and we did grow up. Mr. Sweetie's profession as a saw filer had many of his colleagues moving frequently. He had four different employers, all here in Douglas County. I am an RN; my skills were our side hustle, working part-time when we had an urgent need. We appreciate your ability to encourage wisdom and thoughtful growth. Make the best of what you have, be grateful and courageous in the face of all challenges and love your family, wherever you find them. That is the good life. Thanks, Scott and team.

Thank you for this video! Two years ago, I made the decision to move away from my beloved hometown in pursuit of career opportunities. It was a path I hadn't foreseen, but my job aspirations were simply not available there. When opportunity came knocking, I answered the call. My wife and I are content in our new city, yet, from time to time, a wave of homesickness washes over me, and I long for the comforts of home. I often reflect on the wish that circumstances had allowed me to remain closer to my roots, but life has a way of leading us down unexpected avenues.

Scott, your wisdom and advice are spot on, as usual. My family and I have moved only 3 times so far in the 30 years of our lives together. The first was born out of pure adventure, moving from the Midwest to the Southwest. The second was moving up to accommodate our young kids, and the third was necessitated by a recession. I don’t regret any of the moves, even though the last move was definitely hard on my kids. It saved us financially. The opportunities my wife and I have had as a result, have enabled a life we never dreamed of. We have definitely had more experiences and made good friends in more places than we would have if we had stayed closer to where we grew up. You can’t learn how to fly without that first jump.

  • @musicalcharge

I'll tell you, sometimes you do gotta flee. When my first son was born we were still living in Oakland, and the crime (while always bad) was beginning to get completely out of hand. Gunshots right outside our house every week. We picked up and moved when the baby was just a couple of weeks old. Lost money, lot of stress, but there are just some risks you can't take when you have children.
