I think it’s a bit illogical to talk about “combination” tanning. As you explain in your video, tanning is the process of preserving the hide before it is turned into leather. Much of what determines the ultimate quality of the leather is what happens to it after tanning, as with ChromExel. Only about 4% of leather used in shoemaking is vegetable tannned. Most of this will go into the making of insoles and outsoles. This is because vegetable tanning produces a product that is stiffer and less pliable than chrome tanned leather, so it is ideal for soles. Chrome tanning produces a more suple an pliable leather, which is more suited to being stretched over a last to make a shoe upper. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is inferior. You will get chrome tanned uppers on Allen Edmonds, Carmina, Crocket and Jones, and on bespoke shoes that cost thousands. The leather on Doc Martens is poor not because it is chrome tanned but because it is a mass-produced corrected grain that is just inferior to those used by better shoemakers.

What is it That tends to give leather a very distinctive leathery smell? I am noticing that smell less and less as I get older because I feel like there is some type of different process in creating leathers commonly found in consumer products. I remember walking by every belt rack in the store as a kid and inhaling deeply To smell that wonderful leather smell. That absolutely doesn't exist anymore except for in a very few places and types of product

  • @hejdingamleraev

From my understanding, people tend to wear out their soles first on most boots (given that they pay at least a little bit of attention to conditioning them once in a while) and even a pretty bad leather will last longer. Also, it's often the construction that fails on cheap boots, not the leather itself. As long as the construction holds, the tanning process of the leather isn't that big of a deal when it comes to longevity.
I do prefer vegetable tanned leather though. It smells really nice, it looks good and vegetable tanning is not as bad for the environment (and tanners) as chrome tanning.

The main reason why Veg tanned leather is becoming so unpopular is largely the sheer price I'd say. When veg tanned products are costing as much as sometimes 3-4x the price of similar Chrome tanned alternatives, it really isn't worth the new hole in your wallet for the few benefits it provides. This gets even worse if you don't live in major countries like America or Britain etc... cause of currency conversions and import taxes often causing prices for some brands to blow out of proportion to extreme degrees. This is also ignoring shipping costs being amazingly high (sometimes costing half as much as the thing the person bought).

Side note, I haven't seen you cover cordovan yet. Is it because you prefer more rugged leather styles? Just curious.

Sorry, all of my shoes and boots are veg tanned leather. I had a bag custom made for me a few years ago that cost me over $500 and they used chrome tanned leather that didn’t hold up a full year before it completely lost all of its structure and slumped in the corner looking like something the cat drug in. I will never again waste my money on anything made from leather unless it is 100% Full Grain Veg Tanned Leather.

This video isn't meant to be comprehensive information about the myriad of health effects that he was displaying on screen with studies. He more or less had to gloss over it in an otherwise chill video, and quickly rapid-firing bullet points of serious health issues is a liiiittle bit of an awkward shift of tone. But he wanted to include them, rather than exclude them, in a very general purpose video.
This caused an awkward laugh. People laugh when they feel uncomfortable, all the time. Laughing does not mean something is funny.
