Amazing!!! I was gonna be happy with either result of the top2. If you watch the music video of gloc 9 sirena its the narration of how a normal gay boy experience has with their traditional father who tries to beat the gay out of him. Ppn captured that essence in the final lipsync. Im so sad my wednesdays are back to being boring for awhile. I hope you visit the PH on our summer months mar-may and do some RnR

Wasn’t sure what international audience would think about the final lip sync song, but the song is a very important song to Filipino LGBTQIA+ because it’s about a gay person being abused by their father (and others) and overcoming obstacles as a gay boy. This is why the judges were very emotional watching them so Im glad you all appreciated the performance

I am a solid Team Marina. But as someone who understood the lyrics of their Final Lipsync, PPN truly embodied and clearly won that lipsync. PPN interpreted the song very well. That’s why, even though my fav didn’t win, I’m not mad about it, because PPN truly deserves it. She ate both her lipsyncs that night. I’m also kinda happy because, Marina has a big chance of getting called for an All Stars or VS The World Season.

That final lip sync song carries such a deep meaning especially for the lived experiences of young gay boys in the country - of being abused and battered by their masculine fathers for being too feminine. Just like what Gigi Era confessed about her childhood. Sirena is a truthful and poetic narrative of a filipino gay child’s journey that is too familiar, of being drowned to wash away their “gayness”. But the song also emphasized their resilience by liking them to a mermaid who can breathe underwater, or in this case withstand the abuse and still carry their flag (translation of the last line “bandera ko’y di tutumba”). So it really was the best song to end the series and Precious’ final reveal of the pride flag was perfectly timed, which got her that crown.

I was Team Marina from day one! Putting my bias aside, I truly think Precious ate the finale up. She looked the best she’s ever looked this whole season in that finale and preformed down. I’ve heard she’s a legend in the Philippines, they have their own club nights dedicated to Precious to celebrate her. Also heard she is close to Mama Pao so many people are claiming it was rigged. Overall she won my heart and I’m happy for her. I think she’s been doing drag for over 16(?) years and Marina is only 3(?) years in so she’ll blossom even more than what we saw on this season.

The part that irks me people pushing the narrative PPN was the favored winner when it wasnt it could easily be Marina too. If you understood Sirena's lyrics, you'd realize that Precious had won by the conclusion of the song because she interpreted it better than Marina. In the Philippines, the term sirena, or mermaid, is frequently used as a slur against gay people. The song was intended to turn the insult into a source of empowerment. The song's final phrase translates to "I am a mermaid (gay), and they could never take my flag down no matter what." Precious is seen pulling a dark cloth and unveiling the rainbow colors underneath. It had symbolic value. That's why the judges were overcome with emotion at the end of the performance.

to echo most sentiments yes PPN is more representative of Filipino drag and she nailed that final lipsync. Apart from the well-paced dance moves that gradually upped in ante, it was super impressive that she, bar for bar, lipsynced perfectly to those rap verses (written by Gloc 9 who is know famously known for snappy lyrics). If you remember Pop Off Ate, Turing's and PPN's verses stood out as having uniquely Filipino flow, so when I saw the song choice I knew Precious was going to be in her element. Marina slayed for sure but PPN embodied the song better. That said, Marina's gonna walk out of here with a shit ton of new fans ready to buy her next single so there are no losers here.

When I saw Precious' runway looks, I said, okay she's really pulling all the stops. Then she did the lip sync and I thought she might win, and she did. I was actually thinking Marina would win prior to this episode and I wasn't really thinking of Precious as a front runner. I think Eva was a great contender for top 2 as well. And Xilhouete has become a crowd favourite, at first people were making fun of how long her monologues were, but it has become her trademark that people started to love her for it.
That final lip sync was amazing, she did great. And the song is really what describes what gay kids experience growing up in the Philippines, well, not all of course, but it's mostly those who "moved" or "acted" a certain way and get bullied or punished for "being gay".
I'm excited for the 2nd season of Drag Race PH, and I do hope they let these queens enter other franchises like vs the world or even All Stars PH (manifesting), coz I think these queens are great.

PPN Perfectly portrayed the lipsync. Sirena in English means mermaid. Its about gay resiliency and the struggles and abuse that they encounter
Also the reason its called mermaid is because in the song the father was drowning his son in a drum of water because of being gay. Then there's a lyrics that says you will be amazed by how long I can keep my breath.
On the last part the lyrics says "I am a mermaid, no matter what they say, my flag will not fall" which is why PPN taking of the black fabric tied on his foot and turning it into a rainbow gave goosebumps.
PPN steps also mimics a lot of the lyrics where the lyrics are about playing, being soft, and feminine at the right parts of the song.

SIRENA the final lipsync was very symbolic, I think you need to understand the lyrics for you to appreciate what Precious did. SIRENA is a rap song about growing up being gay, showing girly traits like liking girly games putting lipstick on, dancing in front of the mirror, getting beat up and still standing for who you are regardless of what your parents/society think. "Ako'y isang sirena" ("I am a mermaid" Mermaids being the symbol of being gay especially to young gay kids) "Kahit anong sabihin nila ako ay ubod ng Ganda" (Whatever they say, I know I am beautiful)

Sirena s a term used to tease Filipino Gay boys. The song is about the struggles of Filipino Gay Boy in the Philippines. Precious did some of the relatable actions/dancesteps that correlates to what reasons they might call u gay. It embodies even how many struggles we young filipinoy gay boys had in the past we keep on holding our LGBT flag. The last lyric of song said "Bandera koy di tutumba" meant out of all the hurtings I'll still hold on to who I am no matter what". I'M A MARINA STAN TOO BUT HEAR A FILIPINO VIEWER OUT...
As much as I want Marina to win because of her track record, Precious Paula Nicole has the mainstream appeal. Marina may be the fans' pick to win but the impersonation element of Drag can penetrate the mainstream audience more. And Precious, being one of the most renowned Regine Velasquez impersonator, could contribute a lot in bringing drag culture into the mainstream.
Second, Marina's packaging is very foreign to me--the reason why Turing won in the 3rd episode over her. It may be argued that Marina has better lyrics, technically, than Turing but Turing's lines feel and sound more Filipino. Marina's foreign appeal was very very evident throughout the season.
Lastly, I realized that Marina's storyline of being a prodigal daughter to Xilhouette challenged the social constructs within Filipino culture. In contrast, the show presented Precious as the family-oriented queen. Not that it matters cause I'm probably just overanalyzing these things but in the Philippines, it is very usual for a reality show winner to cater to Filipino values. Also, Marina's storyline ended when she lipsynced against Xilhouette. The same way Monet's storyline ended when she lipsynced against Trinity in AS7 finale.
I'm just really sad cause our first queen are getting a lot of flak from foreign viewers on Instagram. I didn't expect that there would be a time when a Filipino queen would be at the receiving end of this kind of toxicity.
THANK YOU GUYS FOR WATCHING DRAG RACE PHILIPPINES! THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THE TALENT OF OUR QUEENS! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THEM TO CONQUER THE WORLD STAGE ❤💙💛 MARAMING SALAMAT!

That doesn't make sense. Marina has the most fans, popularity = mainstream, in that sense Marina would have been the better win. So, that reasoning isn't valid. Actually, I think that is the reason that production/Mawma Pao didn't want Marina to win bc they want her to be the Philippines representative in international Drag Race competitions (like vs. the world).
Not mad at PPN's win though bc she did better in the finale and she's a sweetheart.

@@josereyes-fd1qp When I say mainstream, I am pertaining to those who are not really watching Drag Race. Marina is probably the fans' pick to win; that's very evident in her social media engagements. But due to Precious's Regine impersonation, she could reach a larger audience spectrum in the Philippines. I think the producers' priority for season 1 is to appease with the Filipino masses instead of pursuing the avid fans.

    • @josereyes-fd1qp
      @josereyes-fd1qp Рік тому +3

@@quinzel3237 I get that bc I know that in the Philippines as well as in other countries like Mexico, Spain, etc impersonations are a big thing. However, seeing as Marina is now signed as a recording artist, I wouldn't be surprised if she makes it out to the masses over there.
PPN is going to be an amazing reigning queen. She has heart and soul. So, overall I'm not incredibly upset about the result.
But I saw the thing you said about Marina having more foreign/international appeal and I agree with that, which is why I think she would have made a good winner since a lot of these girls travel overseas and it would be great to have a winner that can connect and bring a larger audience to the Philippines drag scene and popularize the show. But I don't think Marina needed the crown to do that, I think she already has a lot of ppl waiting for more. So, in a sense, they both will have great success beyond drag race, but still hoping for a "vs the world" with Marina being a part of it.

Regardless, all of them are going to go on to amazing careers as the cast of one of the best, if not the best, season of Drag Race ever. Congrats to the DRP team for a great season. You're going to have a lot to live up to in season two and I know you're ready.

I think Mama Pao/production wants Marina to gear up for a "vs the world" and represent the Philippines. I knew since that interview that they had with them in ep 9 that they weren't going to let her win, they kept saying "you're so young and you're already this good... imagine how much better you'll be... your time will come cause you're a star."

Also is it just me or was this the best lip sync for the crown we’ve had since season 9. The lipsyncs were RUPAUL songs and Precious and Marina still managed to turn it out. Shout out to Eva and Xil asw. And the final ls was such a close call, and ultimately Precious won the crown. It’s kind of the same thing almost? A lipsync assasin (Marina and Peppermint) being bested in the end by the queen no one really expected to win (Precious and Sasha) It’s so poetic

I was Team Marina day 1. I only knew of Precious when I saw her in DR. I didnt like her at first stirring the pot first 2 ep. But after watching her grow. And seeing her story. Also saw her during live shows and her performances was always heartwarming to me and I got pulled in. She also gives her huge tips to the streetchildren one event I saw her (100pesos per kid was huge we usually just give 5pesos or change) and even did a donation fr all their earnings on 1 event after the monsoon. She represents Filipino heart and resilience. She said when she performs she imagines shes performing for her mom so maybe thats why whem you see her live you get sucked in bec I felt all the love she exudes. Marina is a Technician and perfectionist and breathes drag race culture her drag caters more to the western culture while PPN has the heart and narrative Filipino mainstream media wanted. Congrats PPN! Fr a Marina Fan. Im so happy for your reactions congratulating the winner and reminding not to send out hate. Our twitterverse and ig comments have gone haywire here. Here’s the english translation for the last lipsync song. PPN just slightly edged Marina because she had these nuances to her moves that match the lyrics
    I am a mermaid
Whatever they say, I am very beautiful
    I am a mermaid
Whatever they do, my flag will not fall
Drum of water is where I dive
Gigantic arms are pounding me down
Drum of water is where I dive
For longest breather, with me, you'll be amazed
Starting from when I was younger
    You'll notice whenever I play
    Therefore everyone seems confused
that I excel in Chinese garter and hopscotch (note: this is when PPN did the backwards hop, a move from chinese garter)
    My lips are very red
    From the gum I chewed
Always walking in front of the mirror
telling myself "who can they match"
    While waist is swaying
Earrings that are moving (note: this is after PPN removed her wig, dropped down and gyrated)
Using the powder that was purchased from Mrs. Bebang
To hide the bruises on my face
    that came from my father
who is apparently not happy every time I am seen
    Always beaten
As time goes by, I am not even aware
that instead of becoming harder, it seems that it gets softer (note: after PPN flexed her biceps, she did the “Spaghetti” move, a famous dance by pinoy girl group Sexbomb Girls, and also emulated by young gay boys in the early 2000s)
this heart of mine that is very loving
    like curly eyelashes
    I am a mermaid
Whatever they say, I am very beautiful
    I am a mermaid
Whatever they do, my flag will not fall (note: and of course, the Pride flag that she revealed from the black cloth)

Even though Marina served face and had fantastic dance moves, Precious provided better moves with a hint of campiness based on the lyrics of that song. I think maybe the Filipino song threw you off. Marina was definitely winning the first half. But Precious overtook her by the second half. Her lip sync is nuanced to the lyrics. Marina was dancing, yes. But the feeling of the song, Precious definitely captured. I would honestly say it was neck and neck until that very last line of the song. While Marina was already striking her last pose, Precious stole the win with her last move. That line is very moving for us little Filipino gay boys who grew up in non-progressive Philippines. What Precious did in those last notes was very, very moving. It may just look like a cheap dollar store trick to anyone else. But it meant a lot to the people who understood. I don't understand when people say Precious shouldn't be in the Top 4. She's NEVER been in the bottom two. She's been top consistently throughout the competition. Her track record is second only to Marina. The competition is decided on a lip sync and in that final lip sync, Precious definitely overtook Marina.

And she was playing Tumbang Preso which is a children's street game where you throw a can off its position using flip flops.

A slight tidbit, with how Drag Race used Sirena and how Precious and Marina performed to it, the song has finally been given justice and has be reclaimed by the LGBTQIA+ community in the Philippines. Months after its release, the general public ended up using Sirena as an insult or to make fun of the gays, and so a lot of gays ended up fearing the song instead of embracing it.
But now, now that we have it back, I hope people will understand the meaning of the song again.

i know that a lot of people were rooting for marina & i can't blame them. she's a fierce drag queen & at that very young age? undeniably very talented. however in my opinion, precious truly was more deserving of the crown. during the previous episode, when they were asked why they deserve to win the crown, she spoke very passionately about how she (kind of) live, breathe & eat drag. i think people should really try searching some of her live performances because that might convince you better. she's just as fierce as marina & just as good as a performer/entertainer. she's been doing drag longer than marina & if drag race ph were to crown it's first ever winner, it would only be fitting to crown someone who has been in the industry for a long time. besides that, her story about how she wants to go to america to see her family only makes sense for her to win the cash prize. only goes to show that she is not just a fierce drag queen but also a person with a good heart. don't lose hope for marina though because i'm very sure that she will be returning for an all stars season. either in the philippines or maybe even in the main franchise. 😁

I think the finale lipsync song turned the tables. I wished they put subtitle to the song then it would make more sense why Precious won.
I will (attempt) to translate the chorus and end part of the song:
    Ako'y isang sirena
    (I am a mermaid)
Kahit ano'ng sabihin nila, ako ay ubod ng ganda
(No matter what they say, I am very beautiful)
    Ako'y isang sirena
    (I am a mermaid)
Kahit ano'ng gawin nila, bandera ko'y 'di tutumba
(No matter what they do, my flag will not fall)
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
(I dive in a drum full of water)
Naglalakihang mga braso, sa 'ki'y dumidikdik
    (Big arms push me down)
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
(In dive in a drum full of water)
Sa patagalan ng paghinga, sa 'kin kayo ay bibilib.
(In holding breathe, you will be amazed with me)
The rest of the song explains that the gay boy's father tried to "drown" the gay away in a drum full of water. In the end the father got cancer and the rest of his kids did not take of him, except for the gay boy who he tried to change..
The father then said at the end of the song:
Anak, patawad sana sa lahat ng aking nagawa
(Son, I am sorry for all the things I did to you)
'Di sinusukat ang tapang sa ang bigote sa mukha
(Strength is not measured by the mustache on your face)
Dahil kung minsan, mas lalaki pa sa lalaki ang bakla
(Because there are times when gays are more manly than men)
It is an amazing poetic song. I really wished they did a subtitle during the finale. Then it would make sense why Precious turning that black flag into a rainbow flag is so significant. Which may have won her the crown.

However Precious embodied the finale song “Sirena” which is about the struggles of being “gay” since childhood, by doing more relevant dance steps and campy moves fitted to the lyrics. Those solidified her winning…not to mention the emotion she brought in to the audience when she pulled a black lace and turn it to a rainbow and wrapped it to herself. Signifies of embracing her sexuality no matter what. 😉

You're entitled to your own opinion, but no one can ever denied that Precious Paula Nicole slayed in that final lipsync for the crown. That final performance is the deciding factor more than their track record. Both queens gave the best performance of their lives and gave us a really good final showdown. We have to give it to PPN. Just so you know, the lipsync song "Sirena" meaning mermaid is the Philippines' gay anthem. It narrates the experiences of all gay kids in the country, how they were discriminated against and bullied and hurt by people inside and outside their households, and how they fought with love to win everybody's heart and how they proved that their collective experiences and trauma made them stronger than cisgender males who trample them down. Sirena is an allusion to the young queers coming out of the sea (or a drum of water, as in the lyrics, where some father try to drown their own gay kids out of spite and hate for their identities) and evolving into the queens that they are. It's a very fitting song for the finale. Also, the female part of the song was originally sung by Regine Velasquez, the country's ultimate gay icon. Both Marina Summers and Precious Paula Nicole made good use and portrayal of the song's rich Pinoy gay history thru each of their performances. Hands down one of the best editions of RuPaul's Drag Race. Congrats Precious Paula Nicole, a well deserved win! Marina Summers, see you on All Stars vs the World edition!

  • @uwuket
    @uwuket Рік тому +1

The last song "Sirena" (Mermaid) was better lip-synched by PPN. The lyrics are about a boy growing up and experiencing challenges as a homosexual (being beat up by his dad for acting like a girl, wearing make-up, etc.), which PPN danced along to perfectly by adding more illustrative action to every hard-hitting line. The last lyric "bandera ko'y 'di tutumba" ("my flag will never fall" / "I won't surrender my flag") - gave chills when PPN took out the rainbow flag and wrapped consolingly around herself, whereas Marina just held hers up. If you understand the Philippine context of it all, PPN definitely won that battle hands-down. 👏🙌👑
