    Ape 🦧, you did an exceptional great job with this video. Back in the early 1970’s end fed antennas a very bad reputation of emitting extreme large amount of specious interference especially in close proximity instillation. Living on a farm in rural centerline Texas I didn’t have any problems with them and experimented with many different variations with fantastic results when coupled with a good Unum. I experimented with every type of matching device you could think of, lot of FUN❗️❗️👍✅

    Great explanation.
    The real point I find that helps people understand what’s going is this.
    It’s only an end fed “half wave” once.
    If you cut your wire length for 40mtrs it’s a 40mtr end fed half wave. Past that your working on some “other” multiple of a half wave or “high impedance” that’s close to the 49:1 ratio.
    These things are awesome especially for quick deployments.

    Simple is good -- just built one and will test it with the NanoVNA.
    Haven't seen anything about testing a bare EFHW without the UNUN - thought of doing that first to determine impedance at height, then making the UNUN to specific match.
    But decided to just built it as 59:1 - since a little higher than most (30+ one end, 60+ at the other end) -- so seemed better to move toward the 64:1 direction.
    We'll see how it does.

    Just being a Short Wave Listener I set up a Long wire (End Fed) Approx. 60 feet (Max I can run) at first I did not have any balun. I was able to hear the WWVB (60KHz) atomic clock time signal.. So I tried a 9:1 Balun improved things but lost below 500 KHz .. I then Tried a 49:1 (Did not use any Capacitor) as you describe (Big Improvement) 500 KHz to 20 Meters (But still nothing) below 500 KHz is there any way I could get decent coverage from 30 KHz to 30 MHz (Using a Balun) or am I asking for too much.. (I guess a Longer wire) but Can't.. Thanks for this video helping me Understand.

    Regarding Impedance: 1 - What is the Resistance "R" value and what is the Capacitive (XC) or Inductive (XL) Reactance of the End Fed Half Wave antenna? 2 - What is the Resistive and Reactive impedance values looking into the 50 ohm port when the 49:1 UnUn is connected to the antenna? i.e. does the UnUn transform both the Resistive and Reactive components of the impedance? Thanks.

    When you say the cap is a bypass do you mean it's to bring in those freqs you mentioned better or to make it so they are not possible to be used? Why? If you wanted to build a balun/unun for say a OCF dipole that you wanted to try for 80M -- 10M would you use one? How do you determine the cap size?

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  11 місяців тому

      Hey Neal, the cap lowers the SWR on the higher bands. For an OCFD you use a 4:1 transformer which doesn’t use a cap 👍

    I tried the same test with my nanovna. I used a 2400 ohm load. I soldered 16 one percent 150 ohm resistors together. I swept from 6.5Mhz to 30Mhz. My min VSWR was 331! Can the nanovna be used for the same test?

    I have just tested my UNUN from HF-kits ( 100 W ) with a 2,4k resistor. The UNUN is expected to be used with a shorty-40 ( 20m and 40m ) later on. At 40m: flat curve 1:45 SWR and at 20m flat curve 1:47 SWR. No capacitor. Test setup, nanoVNA: 20m = 13-15MHz, 40m = 6-8MHz. Would you guys consider it ok?

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  Рік тому

    Good job! Just built one...this simple test jig is a good illustration for testing. I used my Rig Expert AA-55 BT. Now, if RE would only get the BT to work as they promised...Did you get the Unun end off the ground much? Did you ground it or use a pig-tail on it? Not being critical here...just knowing how the ham world differs on doing this. Steve Ellington suggests a ground. But, you know, this same test jig to follow-up this video with the grounding/counterpoise tests would make a great follow-up. 73 de K4FMH

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Frank, thanks for checking out the video. It seems like RE is only going to use the BT feature in the sticks moving forward, I do like their products. Typically I use a 17' counterpoise on end feds and tune from there, when it cools off I am thinking about installing a ground rod for this antenna. I did a video on endfed's with and without counterpoises here: ua-cam.com/video/Y7vaXcaeVgM/v-deo.html
