There was a house guitar player at Antones in Austin back around 1990 that could steal the show just playing rhythm. Guy never failed to blow my mind

Man, I love the way you talk to the camera. I feel like I'm right in the room with you and you're talking just to me. You've got that magical ability to feel the audience. I've just been playing for 5 years but I'm starting to get a much greater appreciation for EVERYTHING that goes into making music... when it all comes together it almost sounds spiritual.

Ha! New truss rod cover on your goldtop, lost the cover on my 73 in the early 80s & just replaced it a couple years ago. Man, your the premier blues rhythm player on the planet, not to mention your tasty solos

Thank you! Definitely becoming a lost art with some. Many musicians don’t “get” this at all. This concept and dynamics.

Kirk's videos are having a big motivational impact on me. I'm far from being a great player and probably never will be BUT each time I watch Kirk I feel an improvement coming on. A great personality with massive skills, can't thank him enough for taking the time.

Words of great wisdom here-thank you! I still remember reading an interview with Jeff Baxter over forty years ago in which he lauded his fellow Doobie Pat Simmons for his perfect egoless accompaniment. Baxter said he was never aware of what Simmons was playing unless Simmons stopped playing. I’ve tried to incorporate that idea into my own rhythm work ever since.

11:34 "You got a smile so bright, you know you could have been a candle
I'm holding you so tight, you know you could have been a handle
The way you swept me off my feet, you know you could have been a broom"
Just that little rhythm lick sent me back to my childhood!

My guy! 🙏❤️✌️ Yeah if you can't appreciate great rhythm playing, how can you truly love the Blues, considering half of it if composed of great rhythm playing!? 😅
And, how can you even tell if a solo is great or not, unless it's played in time with great rhythm playing?
We could go on, and on, and on. lol
Great havin you back on a regular basis man, be well!

in game theoretical terms, sonic bandwidth is zero sum, but musicality is like the most positive sum thing i know exists =)
the Red Bull Music Academy (?!) had an interview with Brian Eno a few years ago, and first of all the interviewer is *SO* good, I can't find her name to properly credit but she was so well prepared and really understood this concept of egoless support in a very deep sense... but anyway one of the subjects they discuss is his experience as a secular person in a church choir, and devotional music in general and it really made something click for me, why despite having no affinity for the subject matter i often find that music so compelling, and it's *exactly* this!
i'm also enjoying the recent renaissance in egoless funk too, vulfpeck and more recently scary pockets' various projects seem to be very well received because they emphasize arrangements with sparse, complementary parts so well.
now if only jam sessions were like this ;-)
