I am completely new to rugby, never played it, never watched it etc. I came across a video of the black ferns Haka and was completely blown away by the intensity, strength and power of those women. I soon started following Portia on instagram. She is such a role model! I enjoy learning more about her background and culture since I have never had touchpoints with maori culture before. Seing her this vulnerable here just showed again how inner strength has nothing to do with building walls or blocking emotions but being honest and close to oneself. Thank you for the interview!
I was exposed by watching this lady absolutely destroy and crush the other team in a highlight reel. Then I saw the haka. It was awesome. I've seen the men's team haka and that's impressive but the ladies hold their own.
I just discovered Portia this week at the olympics. My gawd. What an amazing athlete. As a Canadian, I am not familiar with rugby. But that has now permanently changed. Women's rugby in particular. The Black Ferns. Oh those women. The gold standard. I had seen her intensity in games, but seeing her softer side in this interview, it had me in tears. I'm going to learn everything there is to learn about this great woman and her Maori culture, which sadly I know nothing about. Fantastic interview.
As big fan of yours I am 100%behind you Portia may your life struggles be relieved, love you girl much respect for you your family and your village, what I love most about you, strong and proud women and HAKA WARRIOR, best of luck girl hold your head up walk proud ❤

5:19 The anti-Māori rhetoric of key individuals in our coalition government reflects their personal bigotry and their newfound power is inflicting a very personal hurt across Aotearoa, as seen written on Portia’s face here - heartbreaking 💔 The shocking lurch to the right that our country has taken in parliament is countered by many, many individuals choosing to learn more about Te Tiriti, Te Reo and Te Ao Māori. Governments come and go, the people remain. Kia kaha.
Maoris now make up 20% of the Population in NZ. But Indians are fast catching up, they surpassed the Chinese in just 2 years. Indians will soon surpasses the Maoris too. There are a lot of jobs going from Maoris to Indians now, all fiber internet connections jobs done by Indians, call center jobs and increasingly bus drivers are Indians same with nurses and carer jobs and many others. The thing is Indians will never be an identity of NZ, and there will never be a time when they overtake so called "real kiwis" population wise the core of Aotearoa NZ has always been and always will be Maori...yes Indians are taking any job they can of course it's been like that for a while, but the real fabric of this land will never change because of immigrants and jobs.

@@dub_h7900 Indians grew from around 3% to 13% in leaps and bounds. The real percentage could be much higher too as many of these have not become PR yet. They are far the biggest of all Asians groups in NZ now and they are not far from the Maoris. Also, they unlike Koreans, Japanese and Chinese who are not having kids, they have a lots of kids more than even the Maoris. Go to any gas stations in big cities they are all employing Indians, many pizza & dominos or fast food chains too. Even you see many TV ads now aiming at Indians. So it’s just a matter of time they become the second largest group in NZ. By the way, roadworks are done by Indians too.

As proud as one is, or should be, of their culture, they should be at least equally critical. Unfortunately, I don't see that in modern Māori culture. I do not see the rate of development one should. The two are inextricably linked.

You can tell by the way she plays that she carries the warrior spirit of her people in her blood.
Most real competitors are just like that. Not anything special to the maori. Lots of great warrior cultures in history
One of the most brilliant athletes I've ever seen.
just watched a highlight reel and it was amazing how she breaks tackles. shes a beautiful person and fierce, hard not to love that!
