Lyrics
At last,
When all of the world is asleep
You take in the blackness of air;
The likes of a darkness so deep
That God at the start couldn’t bear
And sit unseen,
With only the inner upheld
Your reflection can’t offer a word
To the bliss of not knowing yourself,
With all mirroring gone from the world
But still the mind rejecting
This new empty space,
Fills it with something or someone,
No closer could I be to God
Or why he would do what he’s done
Bhfuilis soranna sorcha
Ach tagais 'nós na hoíche
Trína chéile; le chéile, claochlaithe
Is claochlú an ealaín Is ealaín dubh í

The Irish part according to hozier at a live concert:
Although you are light and bright,
You come to me like nightfall(/like night),
You and I mixed up together metamorphosised, it's a dark art, the art of shape-shifting
Thanks for sharing, it's much appreciated.
Bless you! I've been hoping someone would have a translation for this somewhere!
o wow
thank you!
Pretty voice.
The moment when he's singing in Gaeilge and then the harmony comes in... my brain just exploded
That part makes me leave my body 😍
It's called Gaeigle btw, not Gaelic! Gaelic is used more for the scottish language than irish.
@@ryunosukeakutagawa7325 good point, thanks for the info!
Gaeilge*
So unreal ❤
So beautiful to hear such a moving piece in partially Gaelic, I hope we hear more like this in the future
it's not called Gaelic, it's called Irish. Gaelic is the Scottish Celtic language.
@@lucaquinn7707Gaelic is for both celtic language that's why you have Gaelic Irish and Gaelic Scottish. Although it is still uncommon to refer Irish as Gaelic it's not technically wrong
@@lone2234 with all due respect, I am Irish. it is not called Gaelic. the confusion comes from the fact that in Irish it is called Gaeilge, which is pronounced as "gay-lig" in some dialects of Irish, as well as the fact that Scots Gaelic is called as it is.
Could you translate the Gaelige verse, please?
@@lone2234 Gaelic, as far as I am aware, refers exclusively to Scots Gaelic. Gaelige or Irish is used to refer to the Irish language.
What a breathtaking opening to the album. The harmonies and Irish lyrics create such a beautiful contrast to the bass-driven heaviness of part 2. Absolutely stunning.
and it transitions perfectly from one to the other, it's brilliant
I swear that every song from Hozier is so profound I feel like it’s music and poetry in one. I can’t wait to listen to this album on repeat
Heard this live a month ago in London and it was the most beautiful experience I've had at a gig. The whole crowd and the night itself was silent, like everyone was in a trance. I remember just being captivated by him and his voice.
What a beautiful song, I'm so glad I can now listen to it and see the lyrics. Thank you Hozier ❤
Saaaaameeeee I was there❤ it was the most amazing thing❤
You have to know you are killing me right now, Andrew.
This album is a masterpiece.
Thank you
meh there’s some poopers in there
@@cameron8619 well...not everyone has good taste.
@@cameron8619 Why are there always people like you? Not all of the songs are like this one, but it doesn't make them 'poopers'. Why do you need to sh*t on everyone else's experience to be seen for a split second? JFC.
Sorry your taste is doo doo ass, get well soon
@@cameron8619like what?
YESSS i LOVE when artists include lyrics in the language of their culture or heritage! it always feels so intimate and personal
UNREAL UNEARTH AOTY
I turned out all my lights and listened to this song with my eyes closed, and i have never felt truer fear. Thank you so much Hozier, you shake the human spirit with your voice.
My mom passed away recently, my boyfriend broke up with me and I'm terrible at a new job I took a huge risk on. But this, listening to this makes everything seem so much better
strength to you. hope you make it through. 💜
Hope everything goes well for you at the end
Be strong
This is really kind of you both. Thank you for your kind words ❤️

Just keep going, even if it's tough. All the wishes
The album of the year (imo) was released today, by one of the greatest musicians of our time. Just when you think he’s peaked and cannot possibly top his almost flawless catalog of songs,he goes one better with every song. This is the new album opener, just in disbelief atm…
I don't know what happens to me when I listen to this. As if there is a deep mystical presence with me in the room, a silently whispered secret about this existence that slowly unfolds in my heart each time a new tone sets in. Thank you for this transcendental experience, Hozier. I am equally grateful and in deep awe.
This song feels like such a truly beautiful tribute to Irish music, from the guitar that's reminiscent of traditional songs and the hints of sean nós in the vocals, and hearing him sing as Gaeilge is such a beautiful experience. Tá mo chroí líonta le grá. 💛
Hozier is such a golden voice, Discovered him 2015 and haven't stopped listening since
Have been /waiting/ for him to speak Gaelic in a song for so long. This whole album feels like a love letter to his culture, his childhood (r&b musician parents!) and his love for history and story. Just fantastic
Go raibh maith agat hozier for bringing back my love for irish. Its so highly romanticised by non-irish yet its poorly taught in our school systems and makes us students hate our language. This has brought back the spark, Powerful schtuff.
@@tubotuba2051 There are parts of ireland that are definitely beautiful, that's why they attain so many tourists or 'lovers of ireland' but living here is a totally different situation. Our education system teaches our language backwards, thats why I personally don't find it a gift to ireland when people come over here and romanticise our language as if we are taught it correctly and as if its a huge part of our culture that we love and speak, which in minute parts of ireland it is (probably the parts non irish people tend to visit) but realisticly it is dying everywhere else as the common way it is taught gains it dislike amongst majority of students, myself included. It's a problem. however I wanted my initial comment to be positive as hozier incorporating it into his music will hopefully add at least a little positive light to the language to irish people who listen as it did for me.
Did you get back to learning it? Irish needs you.
hey there! if you were looking for a translation of the Irish in the last part of this, here's my rough approximation:
"you are sweet, and warm, and bright,
but you come to me like nightfall,
mixed-up together and transformed,
this is the art of darkness"
Already sobbing from sheer excitement and overwhelming emotions
When the Irish part came in, it was like I was hearing Hozier for the first time
The way the ending of De Selby 1 seeps into the beginning of De Selby 2 ugh purely masterpiece
His voice is so beautiful and majestic, One in a generation artist
First of all, I'm obsessed with this album. But the way this starts with the creaking of wood (from sitting on a bench?) is so perfect. I have to listen to that part ON BLAST because I feel like we're just getting settled in for a journey, storytime, and that's what this album is to me! I'm a new Hozier fan (addict?) and I cannot get enough of hearing it! 🥹
This Is A PHENOMENAL Track; And The Fact That It Was Chosen to Set The Tone For The Album Is Absolute Perfection. The Gaelic Ending Transcends ALL That I Thought This Project Would Be. There’s No Words To Explain Where This Took Me Upon Hearing It.
I’m So Thankful to Experience Everything That Hozier Is.
Other than in my desire to learn Arabic to understand the original word of God Himself, I have never once wanted so badly to know a language other than the ones I already know. Not before this.
As one who knows some obscure languages in full fluidity, I must say that Irish is the most beautiful to hear. I have never had any desire to learn or understand French or all these other languages glorified for their beauty worldwide. Irish, or Gaelic... to speak it would be a filling of some of my heart and mind's cracks. What an intricate, precious language it is. May it never be lost. Never.
Definitely going to read Dante's Inferno with this album playing in the background. I see no other way for it
I can't wait to be lulled into a peaceful slumber...thank you for your beautiful music Hozier, it speaks to the soul ❤ I can't wait to see you in Quebec in September! 🇨🇦
mon mari et moi aussi on va au concert en septembre. j'ai hâte de le voir
C'est excitant! Ça va être un concert incroyable 😍
Hozier, I'm dying inside and having goosebumps because of this beautiful, majestic, unreal album. Thank you.
YOU ROCK HOZIER
This album is going to be that of a masterpiece ❤ I can’t wait!
Having somehow recieved the vinyl of it a whole day early, it absolutely is a masterpiece
Gaelic part is forever imprinted in my mind since I've heard it. Hauntingly beautiful.
gaeilge*
My hair stood on end when he began singing in Irish. This language was made for song
I found myself crying at the beauty and complexity of this piece. Beautifully done.
from the first note...I am moved beyond words!
What is it about this song that makes every cell in my body starts to vibrate slower where I don’t wanna open my eyes just want to remain
i'm mesmerised by the beauty of this song. there's something extremely charming about all those harmonies and lyrics too. an actual masterpiece.
De Selby pt 2 was my favorite song that was released early but I think this one is my new favorite from the album how can it be this good
I’ve seen so many videos of this song from concerts I’m so glad it’s out. And I can’t wait to hear this live nov1
This song is such a perfect start to the album. (On a first listen through, De Selby part 1+2 are my favorites)
can't stop listening, i'm shaken to my core and i literally have this on repeat
We all learn irish extensively in school in Ireland but almost nobody uses it after that so i went from fluent to not knowing what Hozier was singing except thay it was as gaeilge... Tis a shame we weren't forced to speak it
go live in a gaeltacht area if it's such a shame for you or you know just use it...if you were fluent you wouldn't just forget,I've never went from knowing a language or parts of it to just not knowing it,you're full of shite
I love how the last few chords are leading into the begining of de selby part 2!!
De Selby (part 2) is one of my favorite songs off the album so I was so excited to hear part 1. I’m so glad it was as good as I anticipated!! Love this new album 💜
So happy this album came out the same time I had to read Dante's Inferno for school. My essay is going to be based on this album and Hozier in his entirety
Awesome!! 🤩
this new album is going to break my heart i swear 😭🖤
For Shirley 💔
@@tanyamay8831what did Shirley do??
Love the Irish parts! It's a beautiful language.
this album is so enchanting,, when the gaelic and harmonies come in,, my heart is at ease! it’s so beautiful yet soul shattering,, im sobbing as i eagerly await my record
This is how I would describe an eargasm 😂😂
I wish I had some of de selby’s mirrors to go back and listen to these songs for 1st time again ! Video for part 2, Gleason captures de Shelby … always floored by this man’s talent
Ah yes, a new song to ingrain into my personality
Andrew, thank you for blessing us with your new album. This is truly a masterpiece.
Unreal Unearth - best album of the year in the world! Hozier - one of the surviving Mohicans of real music. Keep up the good work!
this is breathtaking, such a great opening to this amazing album. Thank you, hozier
This is beautiful, thank you so much. This entire album is mindblowing
I can close my eyes and feel at peace despite all the chaos in the world right now.
This magnificent song simply makes me feel like I am floating… so beautiful!
Hozier. Angelic voice. Deep everything. Wonderful
This is truly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. 💗
First time listening to this while it's currently raining, think I might have created a core memory by accident
Incredibly beautiful.
I don't know why this screams Christmas to me because I'm going to listen it every second forever, but I think it'd be gorgeous around the holidays.
Still in shock at this masterpiece, Cheers once again Hozier ✊🏽
I love Irish Gaelic! So good
I know that's cliche to say this, but that's so beautiful! I have no other words to describe the feeling of listening to this song, especially bc I'm not fluent in english and what I'm feeling in my heart right now is so complex and deep that I can't express it properly
Breathtakingly beautiful.
The Gaelic harmony ❤
Como faz pra escutar o álbum todo se não consigo superar a perfeição dessa música?????? Hozier, vc não tinha esse direito 😭😭😭😭
Always always..
Hozier gives us classics... ❤❤
Wonderful voice. I would like to sing with Hozier. One of the best.
Heart hurts and bursts simultaneously - adore this song, indeed everything on UnReal.
I wish he would do a song in all gaeilge it’s so beautiful
Breathtaking !
Deeply moving. The meaning of the Gaelic words, anyone?
Its called gaeilge not gaelic and im pretty sure theres a translation in the comments :)
grma!!! hoping to see more irish language songs like this in the future :’)
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! The part in irish is otherworldly and andrew is such a blessing to our ears and souls.
THIS SONG IS TRULY INSANE
Gaelic sung so beautifully
i love when he sings in Gaelic
I love this song, i could listen to it everyday if i wanted to
this song is for the late night musings by the the fireplace (when all of the world is asleep)
Incredible, wow.
such a beautiful song
This is truly beautiful!!! The images and lyrics go so well together. So looking forward to my birthday present on September 29th!! 🎂💚
Please please please do more with the Irish language! This is so beautiful, what a way to revive the language 🙌🏻 thank you Andrew
as an irish gal myself, i appreciate the irish lyrics being included bc they weren't in the booklet and the ones originally on genius are 100% wrong ahahah
hi, I have a question and I would like to know if you can help me. all the translations that I find of these verses seem a bit meaningless to me, I would like to know which would be the most accurate translation, do you have any idea?
beautiful birthday gift! thank you hozier 🧡
what a magnificent and hypnotizing opening to an album... the moment the gaelic part started i got chills all over my body. UN-REAL... like the album's name
oml the last couple minutes of this are heavenly 😩
