The disturbing and disgusting contents of this book are extremely off putting. Despite the revolting words, your voice manages to calm down the rage I feel towards the characters and author.
Something I always pondered was De Sade (if he had managed to complete his manuscript) wanted to detail their departure from Silling after all the horrific bloodshed and torture. Yet early on in the novel, Durcet has the bridge destroyed so there were no means back down the mountain into the Black Forest. Just a thought...
This book has lots of plot holes, like the fact that the Bishop hates vaginal sex, but impregnated a woman just to have a daughter and make her as a sexual slave, and the fact that they are so passionate about eating feces and drinking piss, but without their health being affected by that. As for your thought about, maybe they had some kind of secret underground places/passages below Silling and used that to return to Paris.
I do not know how it sounds like in English but when you read Sade's books in french, it is so well written in contrast to the depravity and sometimes the horror that is depicted . That is why Sade is so fascinating . His books are Art and Hell at the same time
I saw the salo movie before reading the book. A friend of mine, who had watched it a few times, raved about it, telling me that "there's horror movies...and then...there's salo." The movie to me now is on my "hard to watch" movies list, which includes the plague dogs, sybil, last exit to brooklyn and grave of the fireflies. I have always had the ability/curse to visualise good/bad dreams, memories and thoughts in full colour, often I can smell and even touch in them too. That is why I have the list of movies I avoid, because if I was to watch one, it would later replay in my head and stay in my thoughts, bringing on insomnia, also causing me to get emotional at times. I remember the first time I ever saw a ritualistic (ie brutal) killing of an animal on the internet. It was of a horse and machetes were used. For 6 months that footage haunted me. The movie adaptation of salo wasn't the first movie that completely scared the hell out of me. It is a movie I last watched 20 years ago and my skin crawls just thinking about it, even now. The expression on her face as she is looking out the window, her eyes growing wide from what she can see (and smell).
