This is coming from a Utah Ute fan. I really don't know why anybody really cares how high their team is ranked. I always want Utah to not be ranked. Don't put us on the top 25 ever. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if BYU runs the table and they're undefeated. They're going to the college football playoff even if they lose the big 12 championship game. Sure they won't get a bye in that scenario, but they're still going to the college football playoff no matter what. They might even go with one loss. They're a solid team. They should be able to handle the remaining teams, even my Utes. But who gives a crap what they're ranked doesn't even matter. Rankings are stupid.
BYU is a legitimately tough team. They are strong on both lines of scrimmage, they have playmakers on offense and sure tacklers on defense. They may not be as stone cold as Georgia on defense or as dynamic as Ohio State on offense, but this BYU team can line up and go toe to toe with most teams in the country. I think they are legit Big 12 title contenders and even legit playoff contenders. Now where will they end up? Only time will tell.
Tough for the Big 12 for sure lol. But against the top SEC or Big 10 teams, it would probably get ugly. But still an awesome season for them. And we all know, college football can get crazy. So you never know for sure..

@@mad85123 If Utah can score that many points, it will be one of the surprises of the season. Very doubtful based on how both teams have played this season.
In 1984, when BYU won the National Championship, I remember all the sportscasters, ESPN, and others, in an uproar. A university like BYU could be crowned Nation Champ, how can that be, all chanted in unison. Every announcer said, "This cannot be allowed to happen again". Those of you who are old enough to recall this can verify it. It was demeaning, the concerted effort to downplay BYU that year of their victory. Sure enough, every time BYU should be in the top rankings, where are they, at the tail end of polls. The promise made forty years ago still rings clear in the voices of the so-called experts
Hey man, thanks for the kind words. Admittedly, when I caught your show/power rankings last week I was certainly very surprised by the model having BYU outside the top 30, including having us ranked behind both SMU and Kansas State, two programs whose only losses this season come to an undefeated BYU squad. That said, I can totally see where your model is coming from, because there are certainly many “hard” analytics that wouldn’t necessarily place us and our performances in a favorable light, to say the least. Thus, I agree with you that this team certainly possess certain “X factors,” amongst which might certainly include things such as high-level coaching, grit, passion, work ethic, on-and off-field intelligence, commitment to principle, to name a few. Regardless, we’ve been very blessed this season, and are doing our best to remain true to Kalani’s apt slogan and motto for this team and season: “Stay Hungry and Humble.” Once again, appreciate the kind words and, and no need to apologize. If it makes things feel any better, we BYU fans are often amongst the most skeptical of our team ourselves (and given historical precedent, could one blame us, or anyone else for holding such feelings?) Great show, and looking forward to catching future videos of yours! Excited to see how the rest of the season pans out. Anything can happen, and that’s the beauty-and, sometimes great conundrum and heartache-of college football. God bless!
Well, the model obviously does not track everything. Like heart.. Like team unity, discipline and quality of coaches. The honest truth is in several games BYU could have padded the score big time, but DID not.
Haha...first time watching your podcast. Thx for owning it and stepping up. I'm now a fan and new subscriber. Keep up the BYU content and you'll see a nice bump in your views and subscriptions from our national fanbase
BYU has proven to be better than what Vegas & the computer models are saying, but the question is why? What are the computers getting wrong about this team? It’s not strength of record, BYU’s SOR is top 10. Could it be too much weight given to recruiting stars? Maybe BYU, due to its uniqueness, is able to get more underrated recruits. Maybe there are more Puka Nacuas and Fred Warners who didn’t get 5 stars in high school but have the talent in spades. Maybe the model places too much value on last year’s results - dangerous in today’s college football where rosters change and can improve quickly. Who knows?
Vegas doesn't gamble. It makes money on people that gamble. That means they set it up so they make money no matter who wins the game. The line is set up so that you get a roughly equal number of betters on both sides. The game analytics are a secondary driver. They should tell people which side of the line to bet on, but Vegas responds to the bets, not the analytics.
Very funny! And thank you! Most people would walk over hot coals to avoid saying they were wrong about anything. BYU fans are used to this and we are just happy to be in the AP top 10. But it’s nice to finally get some kudos from national experts. Thanks again!
My sister and Husband graduated from BYU and I've been a fan since my high school days. Long time ago. So I'm on board with them hoping for a show down with a undefeated season between them and an undefeated ISU team in the BIG XII Championship game. I want BYU, but am pulling for ISU to make the playoff too, just to shake up the playoff system in its 1st year!
Sometimes sportswriters forget Vegas sets their odds/spread to make money. Not determine which team is better. They are not always accurate, especially for BYU where Vegas is trying to entice fans to bet more.
I think BYU respects all these teams and above all each other. On the field, all they have is each other. Coaching is great, players mention them all the time. I've noticed UNLV, Vanderbilt, Boise all playing well. It's not in your face play that wins games. It's teamwork and a lot of respect for oponents and teammates. Of course there's more.
I love college football. My brother Mike threw to Austin Collie's dad Scott at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose CA, both Mike & Scott chose BYU, a school we never heard of. Bill Walsh offered em partial Stanford scholarships, but a QB named John Elway was dominating it. Welcome BYU to the Big12 yr2. I'm betting against byu for 3 pts for the UnivOfUtah Nov9th game. No affiliation to UU here. => It only has one ranked team on its schedule (kanST). Repeat, only 1. => BYUs Defense has given up 157 pts so far compared to 83 pts amongst its closest rank teams ND(95), TX(77), TN(76). => BYU Undeafeated against cupcake teams is never a good thing. Nor squeeking by OKST by 3pts. =>BYU is ranked #12 in Coaches Poll, so something's going on there. => It has only played ONE ranked team (KanST). Credit--I noticed its offensive players are playing with strong motivation. This makes for exciting football. When BYU knocked off KanST, that's the only thing that moved its Rank chains from what i honestly see. UCF is unranked. Might also be a Big12 thing compared to BYUs prior independent status. I dont think this can be sustained, esp not in the first round of Playoffs if it gets past UU. Nov9th under the lights is guaranteed to be an exciting mashup. For those that know my bro Mike, please encourage him to start drafting his book re his football journey! My clients luv Mike's story, recommend a book
BYU has a thorn in their side in the form of Univ. of Utah. Utah beats them more than the other way around. Even though BYU is playing much better football this season, it's still a hurdle to get past. GO BYU!!!
As a BYU fan I don't mind the negative energy from anyone! It has definitely helped this season as much as the coaches and players pretend it doesn't. I am terrified for Utah too! The rest of the regular season seems possible though!
I hope you weren't giving people betting advice. Because BYU covered the spread seven of eight games. If you were giving advice, you really hurt a lot of people's pocket books.
I'm right there with ya, Josh. I have regarded BYU with skepticism all season, expecting them to lose at some point and they just haven't. In fact, they just keep winning in impressive fashion every week. This is coming from a season-ticket holding Utah fan. It pains me to say, but BYU is clearly the superior team this season by far. I know rivalry games can be crazy, but I honestly don't see a path for a Utah victory when BYU visits Rice-Eccles stadium on Nov 9.
That wasn't a sincere mea culpa. That was a begrudging effort at preserving credibility. He doesn't mean what he says. If BYU loses to the Utes, he will be among the first to retract and say I told you so.
Thanks a lot Josh😢😢😢. I messed all my bet slip tickets up costing me about 500 hundred dollars. My wife wanted to divorce me. You're still my guy Josh, but man this one really hurts.
Totally happy for the Y and their fans. They are a great team this year, but many college teams fluctuate each season. They'll be back to normal next year. Also, I'm a fan.
BYU wrecked college football’s structure in 1984 by becoming national champions. And what is now the P5 powers that be didn’t like it. Now they are about to do it again, 40 years later. Go Cougars.
BYU has had a further road to climb for credibility. They started the season at the bottom of all preseason predictions. Also most of their recruits come from 3 stars and lower. These facts produce doubters who place a strong emphasis on recruiting rankings.
It's ok dude. The next game will be interesting in that Utah is a long time rival and no matter the game it is always close. In fact with Utah they have been dominate against BYU. So I imagine the game will be similar. I wonder what happened with Utah this year. The sports news people are saying there are some internal issue. So we'll se what happens.
Git rid of your model and let the teams play if they win great if they don’t great. Stop falsely putting the SEC on the top. The playoffs should be 16 teams with no bye week. If you are really good you will win. If you don’t win well better luck next year. It is time to get rid of the armchair couch potatoes and let the players and coaches decide who is number one not some arbitrary pole ranking.
This video was hilarious, but it is true that BYU is a very good team. They don't have too many weaknesses...they dial up pressure, they stop the run average, but they really defend the pass well...they have great corners and safeties. Their offense just rolls. Great QB, great backs, great line, they can bully you...then there is special teams that are also some of the best in the country. It is just a real solid team.
I love BYU and am a loyal fan, but I also know the intensity of the rivalry game that is coming up soon with Utah. I know their fans and coaches, and trust me, they will be ready. I hope I am wrong, but my money is on Utah in that environment. I hate hearing myself think that.
Josh, brother I'm really hurt. My first time betting and I chose to listen to you brother. You're still my guy, but this one hurts. I played about 500 hundred dollars in betslip tickets thinking I'm going with your analogy then those so called experts. Thanks for the apology but 500 dollars to me and my family is a weeks salary. 😢😢😢
Josh - thanks for calling Brigham Young by the acronym, BYU. You've come through on your bet to use the acronym if they beat Baylor two years ago. Thank you. The Y sounds great coming from your channel! Keep it up!!!
You are funny and smart and love the camera, you’re going to break through pretty soon. It’s night and day comparing you and the blond kid. Y’all know what I mean.
I don't think it's "entirely" wrong.... because after watching Oregon's game this week, if BYU actually played Oregon, I suspect they would be utterly DESTROYED. So, while they've definitely done well, they could be better.
Josh are you aware of the cool stuff that BYU does on their away games ? Recently they bring a semi truck load of food stuffs to the local food banks where they play. Orlando, Arkansas etc . I think they supplied blankets to one venue. Check it out. So cool. They are amazing. We should follow their example and walk the walk.
Josh, here are really difficult factors to quantify for BYU: Altitude-The 3rd quarter can be really hard on both the physical and psychological aspect for offensive and defensive lineman because they find themselves unable to breath at 5,000 foot elevation. Return Missionary-Some BYU players come back from their missions ready to play who are 22 years old and monsters on the field. Stadium Noise-The noise is deafening in the area of the student section. Maturity--BYU players don't make the stupid fouls that occur from many 18 year old's. Teamwork--Your a part of a much bigger purpose in life at BYU, and that manifests itself on the field in a team that works together. 4th quarter show--I know that sounds ridiculous, but opposing players will watch the show or the Wasatch Mountains instead of focusing on what the coach is saying to them. Fans--For the player who thrives on being screamed at, or yelled at by the opposing team's fans, your not going to find that during a BYU game. Instead they are generally offered ice cream. So, how Vegas quantifies those factors is beyond me.
Funny, people typically feel sorry for the Return Missionary/maturity factor at BYU because you can't take a player out of the middle of their college career for 2 years, not let him touch a football or work out and expect him to start playing again at a high level. However, when BYU does have a good season, that same reason is touted as an advantage.
And the Missionary experience factor is a myth. If it really was so effective, why don't other teams do it? Make their athletes go on missions? BtW Jake Retzlaff didn't go on a mission. Oh and how about Cam Rising being a 7 year senior for Utah. Lot of good that did them. So phooey on "experience". How about just being a good team with good coaches and with good players that play as a team? Think that works?
The returned missionary and maturity things--I love it when people, especially opposing coaches, bring that up. Yeah... BYU has this huge advantage because they're playing grown men (who are just turning down the NFL for the glory of college football) against 18-year-olds! One of these days, one of these other coaches just might wise up and think, "Hey--I have redshirt seniors in their mid-20's with an extra year for COVID... I should play them instead of my 18-year-olds!!!" What a bunch of morons those other coaches are! Now, anyone who has spent any time reasoning through this will know that if an 18-year-old is playing, it's because the coach thinks he might be the best choice instead of any of his other options, like happened with UCF first playing fifth-year senior KJ Jefferson at quarterback, then trying true freshmen EJ Colson for a half and deciding--shockingly--that he wasn't ready, so they then went to redshirt sophomore (third year) Jacurri Brown. And, guess what? If BYU has great players who are true freshmen, those freshmen play! LJ Martin is our best running back. He was effectively our #1 running back for a significant time last year as a true freshman while the senior running back was injured, and now he is the guy in his second year, starting over a redshirt senior and two redshirt juniors. Now, the maturity issue: that's a cultural thing. There is certainly more maturity gained by those who serve missions, but you're generally going to find maturity in all the players across the board regardless of religious affiliation--many of the players are not LDS--or mission service. There is built-in maturity to the majority of LDS young men because of the expectations placed on them religiously growing up. BYU recruits players that fit that culture regardless of their background, and they usually find them among young men that have some kind of belief system, whatever that might be. Our two top quarterbacks are Jewish and Baptist. They are both great fits at BYU because of the kind of people they are, but they certainly did not serve LDS missions.
So, enjoy a lunch we're serving for you and some other sports-experts; It's *_not chicken and it's not turkey!_* 😅 Seriously though, this is gracious of you.

I'm one of those fans moving the algorithm lol I can't get enough of my COUGS. I see it as a good thing.
As a BYU fan, we've learned to just roll with it. Apology is appreciated but not necessary. You're not the only one out there who doubts and we welcome you to the core of true-blue believers. The only thing that really counts is who these young men are. What happens on the field is a close second. And they're doing pretty DANG good!
BYU alum and fan. No need to apologize. None of us feel entitled. We like to prove our team on the field of play. Go cougs!
None of you feel entitled, Hahahahaha good one!! Do you know how many testimony meeting I had to sit through where at least one of you would get up and wax poetic about "how this was our year?" year after year? I grew up in the heart of Utah County and all I saw was entitled BYU fans! haha.
@@jbjstyx Probably zero?

@@jbjstyxthe majority of us BYU fans didn't grow up in Utah, much less Utah county.

@scottb296 You wrote . You realize as I do this mysterious free #12(Coaches Poll), #9(AP) rank gift cannot be sustained, esp when UnivOfUtah takes em on Nov9th. BYU Defense has given up 157 points while the average is 83 points amongst ranked teams next to em TX(77), TN(76), ND(95). They play/played only ONE ranked team on their schedule. Nearly 100% of the teams they play/played are unranked
I think a legitimate conspiracy is Vegas is doing their darndest to get BYU fans to start betting. Last weeks line was so ridiculous it probably flipped some good people. Free money!
Vegas was founded by Mormons
It worked on me. I won $240 on Saturday. How do I not take free money??
Not so much a conspiracy, the bets change the odds and the mormon majority of BYU's fan base does not bet. This skews the betting lines.
@@drewgunderson1172is it cuz you're not Mormon? Or just materialistic?
@@BackScotlandRugby I never let that sink in. That's the other half of my equation that I never put my finger on. @@tre1sixThat’s kind of how it’s been for decades sadly. We are good all of the time, but it always gets to big for them and they choke the worst games to possibly choke. Utah is scarring BYU fans to death right now. Brace for the classic choke. If anyone can do it, the Utes can.

Well done JP recognizing how solid this BYU team is! Go COUGS!!!
Great stuff! Go Cougs!
Don't worry. Us BYU fans thought the same thing. BYU is for real.
God bless!
This is one of the more humorous and interesting sports broadcasts I've heard in a long time LOL
Who knows?
The honor code honestly could be an advantage I’ve heard byu athletes say so. They have no distractions from women or partying or anything.
We forgive you josh - love your show
Glad I put $5 on BYU to win the national title this year. When someone gives you 1,000 to 1 odds you take it!
😂😂😂
Vegas doesn't gamble. It makes money on people that gamble. That means they set it up so they make money no matter who wins the game. The line is set up so that you get a roughly equal number of betters on both sides. The game analytics are a secondary driver. They should tell people which side of the line to bet on, but Vegas responds to the bets, not the analytics.
Apology accepted. Way to win yourself JP. Takes some humility. You da man.
And with no apologies either!

I feel like you are saying the ‘Y’ correctly. I pronounced it the same way my whole life. Is there something I’m missing?
Keep, keeping BYU out and doubting BYU. BYU will keep on winning. Rise and Shout the Cougars are out!!!
Sometimes sportswriters forget Vegas sets their odds/spread to make money. Not determine which team is better. They are not always accurate, especially for BYU where Vegas is trying to entice fans to bet more.
I enjoy BYU being an underdog that makes them play harder and they focus better so don’t stop now.
As a UCF fan I don't understand how we keep getting favored to win these games. We're as bad as FSU this year
I love college football.
As a BYU fan, much respect to you Josh
BYU has a thorn in their side in the form of Univ. of Utah. Utah beats them more than the other way around. Even though BYU is playing much better football this season, it's still a hurdle to get past. GO BYU!!!
They’re a tough hurdle but this is the year to handle them. They just lost to Houston. Utah is in shambles right now
As a BYU fan I don't mind the negative energy from anyone! It has definitely helped this season as much as the coaches and players pretend it doesn't. I am terrified for Utah too! The rest of the regular season seems possible though!
The Holy War is going to be wild this year.
I am very impressed with BYU
I hope you weren't giving people betting advice. Because BYU covered the spread seven of eight games. If you were giving advice, you really hurt a lot of people's pocket books.
The national media has always downplayed BYU's success.

They'll be back to normal next year.
Also, I'm a fan.
I could not believe BYU plus 3. I hammered it.
I was in Vegas last night chilling and there was BYU gear and necklaces being sold everywhere. It was crazy. Go Cougs!

Cougs are a hard hitting team! They will be hard to deal with!
BYU has had a further road to climb for credibility. They started the season at the bottom of all preseason predictions. Also most of their recruits come from 3 stars and lower. These facts produce doubters who place a strong emphasis on recruiting rankings.
The best I can figure is that Jake the Dude rolls on Shabbos. And the Dude abides. All is well. All is well.
It only took him two months to realize that BYU is the best team in the big 12
Git rid of your model and let the teams play if they win great if they don’t great. Stop falsely putting the SEC on the top. The playoffs should be 16 teams with no bye week. If you are really good you will win. If you don’t win well better luck next year. It is time to get rid of the armchair couch potatoes and let the players and coaches decide who is number one not some arbitrary pole ranking.
BYU still has something to prove.
They’ll handle it in December when they whoop Iowa state
This video was hilarious, but it is true that BYU is a very good team.
The BYU Qb is Jewish and the Lord said that the seed of Abraham would bless the world
I love BYU and am a loyal fan, but I also know the intensity of the rivalry game that is coming up soon with Utah. I know their fans and coaches, and trust me, they will be ready. I hope I am wrong, but my money is on Utah in that environment. I hate hearing myself think that.
Every year they get on a good run like this they have a big letdown.
Josh, brother I'm really hurt. My first time betting and I chose to listen to you brother. You're still my guy, but this one hurts. The next TCU in a year where no team is as good as 2022 UGA, I’ll take that!
The TCU team that beat Michigan in the semi-final? Sounds like a solid showing for a team expected to fight to barely get bowl eligible.

Thanks.
Now make a video for Indiana ! Since they are on upset alrert every week yet they keep winning
So, enjoy a lunch we're serving for you and some other sports-experts; It's *_not chicken and it's not turkey!_* 😅
Seriously though, this is gracious of you.
