I remembered watching this film for the first time. I din't know who she was and at first I didn't like her look either. By the end of the movie, she has became absolutely adorable.
It was funny how everybody read the letter and nobody wanted to give him the bad news and also they decided to let Faye to deliver it, also giving a chance and hoping that they couple together.
@@RatatRatR yes! It showed how hard for him to accept it and the sound of a departing plane deepened his feeling. Meanwhile, I like how she stared at him, looks like she felt sorrow for him but also means she had a chance This formed a beautiful picture.
Manuel Delgado it’s about mentality, this movie is a homage to the middle class lifestyle, if you’re a vapid, tasteless and uncultured bastard no amount money is ever gonna make life exciting for you but if you have even a drop of personality and taste then you can make even the monotonous and mundane everyday tasks like listening to loud music and introspecting valuable. Life isn’t exactly like this for most but it could be if conceit, materialism and gaudiness are taken out of the equation.
I really miss the old Hong Kong. Thanks Wong Ka Wai for capturing the best Hong Kong. Faye's acting is incredible. I can't believe she's a singer. She is my favorite singer in Hong Kong.
This movie would not work if it was shot today. The flight attendant would have just broken up with him by text. Love the whole vibe and a time when we didn't all have phones 24/7.
Same thing with the pager/phone booth and password with "love you for 10,000 years". I mean, it could still be done, but they would probably have to do away with that, or find a way to incorporate it differently. Or if they made it today, just set it in the time period as a period piece.
You realize Wong Kar Wai is still making movies to this day right? As well as countless other great filmmakers who make meaningful movies? Shut the fuck up.
If you love Faye in this movie, please listen to "Miss you night and day" by Faye Wong. This sing was released on 1992 and her voice is so good during her prime.
I’m glad I did this. I grew up with American version of this song by a group called The Deele which was headed by music artist Babyface. In particular, the live version remix of the song is the one Ms. Wong beautifully recreates.
This film captures the beautiful, anxious, nervous feelings, literally, all mixed feelings of Hong Kong , which was going to returned to China soon. HK is not , and will not be the same again. Pity.
My Love you hope wish and pray a Woman would take this much interest in you or any gender for that matter she is obsessed dedicated and fixated yet she has a subtle beauty that is organic as well as rebellious for some reason; her actions and personality is what makes her so cool because we know alot of women ain't going through the trouble of all that she did in this movie unless their is money material and status along with exact preferences met!
In the version on Max, Faye Wong's "Dreams" begins playing as he drinks the coffee. Is that not how it's supposed to be edited? I loved that needle drop
I watched this on Mubi and they put on a Cranberries song in the undercrank scene in this. Didn't have the same gravity as this. edit: i was wrong, I think it was a Faye Wong cover
I don't know if she wrote it on a boarding pass but she is a stewardess and the waitress herself becomes a stewardess towards the end of the film. The entire film has a theme of getting away, of flying and travel. Even the music "California Dreamin'" is about the the waitress' desire to leave and see new places.
I found it interesting that all people in the film speaks Cantonese but the letter is in English? Is it intensional? so that the international audience can still read what's in the letter?
No not really. Hong Kong was a British colony before 1997. English is sorta like an official language over there. Lots of Hong Kongese not only speak Cantonese but also English. The funny thing is that people speaking English has always been treated a higher class of people. The cops in hk usually doesn't need a lot of education. So here comes the nuance, writing the letter in English sorta made sense in a way that the flight attendant was mocking the cop and didn't think him of like good bf material. It's sorta condescending. I would say the director exactly captured a lot of Hong Kongese female's mentalities towards it's local culture and the western culture.
Note that the boarding pass itself is in English. It's also the normal mode of communication for a flight attendant. I don't see the implication of hierarchy between a flight attendant and a cop. In fact, I'd say police is more revered, it's definitely harder to get in. And they are required to have adequate English too. It's the royal police who still salute at the queen at the time, afterall.
It's literally impossible not to fall in love with Faye Wong after watching this film.

Have you watched 2046? It's next level of Faye Wong :D
@@chinglau6766 Yes I did, but I think she is really something else here, in 2046 she is overshadowed by Zhang Ziyi imho

Insanely beautiful shot while he drinks his coffee.
That's called a step printing effect. Basically tge frames are multiplied.
I mean, that's well and good, but to me it's less about the technique and more about how it's used to such remarkable emotional resonance.

The way the guys react to the letter was hilarious.. absolutely nailed it. “Awww shit man!”.. “goddamn”
