  • Should airlines be equipped with laser beams to clear geese out of their paths? This video demonstrates a little known fact (actually discovered by the author quite by accident in Aug 2009) that geese are actually very cognizant of the presence of a laser beam. Look for a little green dot to the left or below the geese and notice how they respond to it. This does not work with many other species. For example, crows are not phased in the least by the presence of the laser beam or its dot.

    That's odd because I haven't noticed it affecting hardly any other birds except ducks are slightly sensitive to it. But I've shined it at blue jays, even right in their eyes from 10' away for example, and still absolutely no response.

    @LeeSail I have the 350 mW hulk laser from dragon lasers. It has a thick bright beam that can even be seen in the daylight. If you search dragon lasers on UA-cam you can see them herding black birds.

  • @LeeSail
    @LeeSail  12 років тому +1

    Really. They seem so wary of a green laser that you would think the airlines could somehow use that phenomenon.

  • @LeeSail
    @LeeSail  12 років тому +1

    Interesting. Don't know if some combination of green laser would work for the airlines though.

  • @LeeSail
    @LeeSail  11 років тому +1

    I visited Dragon and I see they even have a 400 mw version . . . for over $1,000. But I paid close to that for mine about 8 years ago so I shouldn't complain.

  • @LeeSail
    @LeeSail  11 років тому +2

    Good info. I still think the airlines should investigate this phenomenon more especially if, as you say, they are frightened by the beam itself.

    use a firecracker or a steel bb gun, the laser only scares them for a while and then they just keep looking at it without getting scared... if I had enough money, I would do an arduino targeting sistem, but I only have the RedBoard and a few components...

    If you had a more powerful laser it would make them take flight as they would see the beam also. Mine works good with the black birds. I can make them fly around in circles for hours if I wanted to. LOL

      I use a bigger laser to herd geese professionally and it does not work in daylight, overcast it works, but barely. Nighttime, its instantaneous.

      MaryValley they’re pests... they’re very territorial. We’ve had geese knock golfers into the ponds. And while I do find that extremely hilarious, it’s also a problem that needs to be taken care of. Plus the poop from the bastards is full of harmful bacteria.

      They destroy the grass. And then when you try to put grass seed down to regrow the grass they damaged, they keep eating the seeds. Their shit doesn't go away until it is ground up in the mower. So yeah, it matters. Not all ponds or other bodies of water have houses around them. There are other places they can go where they won't be a nuisance.

      I work in the park and we have dozens of geese on our fields and most of them are entirely covered in goose crap to the point the town doesn’t know what to do about it. The town even paid millions to remove a very old local man made pond because the problem was so bad in that area but I think it’s just made the problem worse in other areas around town. They had about 20 of us go out with leaf blowers and blow off the entire field a few times into GIANT mounds of crap weighing hundreds of pounds that we needed a mini excavator to scoop up and fill an entire dump truck load full of crap. We did this at the end of winter and now in spring the field is completely covered again and nobody wants to keep clearing the field that way because it is unsustainable work, disgusting, and unsafe blowing crap everywhere and it getting picked up by the air and breathed in by anyone on the nearby area. These are the fields that kids play sports on, and when I say covered I mean completely covered to the point where there are thousands of “cigars” spaced out inches apart across the whole massive field the size of 8 football fields. There was a football game and the teams were wearing white uniforms and by the end of the game they were entirely covered head to toe in goose crap staining their uniforms and completely caking up in their cleats and leaving a long trail of crap out the exit of the park and into the parking lot as it came off their cleats. They looked like they all just went mud wrestling except none of it was actually mud it was all crap 🤮 I don’t know how more people haven’t complained about this or made it an issue but we are the ones who have to deal with it while mowing and maintaining the parks so we see how bad it really is when most people don’t notice since they barely spend time in the park.
