- US Army soldiers assemble an M-4 floating bridge across a river in this demonstration video. Designed for use during the Rhine river crossings, it was not ready in time. (With sound & narrated)
The narrator uses the word "ponton" (an automobile body style of the 1930s - 1950s) instead of "pontoon".

As a six-year old evacuee, living with my Grandma in WWII, her property ended at the meadows bordering the river Thames in Pangbourne, Berks. The U.S. army practiced pontoon bridge building over the river at that point. At night these pontoons were moored along the river banks with ropes. The adventurous boys would untie the boats and we would all go for a very short boat trip. Short, because it wouldn't take long for us to be seen and yelled at to get off.
Joan Scovell :) nice story. I am curious about the rest of it. what would happen then??
My dad was a bridge builder for US Army in Rhine during the 1950s.
My grandpa was. They hold a record for building a bridge the fastest. Cool!
