Picked up my copy of SAM earlier in the week and noticed the Caudron on the cover and thought 'I recognise that!'. Congratulations on getting published, it really looks great on SAM's glossy pages :)
So far I've only employed them on green or brown aircraft, so I'll have to think how best to do it when I get to that stage on the Hellcat with it's various blues!
Lovely work on the Karas, like the balance and tone on the paint scheme. The sky servant will build up into a very nice kit. Realy good update discussion.
I have this kit in my stash - I already built a bare-bones 1/72 scale version, and when I saw this come on the market (years ago) I had to have it. I actually have never looked inside the box (still sitting shrink-wrapped on the shelf) so it's great to see the interior so well detailed! I absolutely love planes from between the world wars and would be overjoyed to see someone put out what the French considered to be 'effective' heavy bombers like the Bloch 152 or the Potez 631. The Bloch especially has such a weird design - it makes me think of the Winchester house with modules that look as if they were just added on randomly. Russian heavy bombers give that appearance as well.
Nothing wrong with the quality of the video.. ;) Spent all day at the 'ModelKraft' show at Milton Keynes yesterday, a bit of a slow show this year but I got some bargains, including a 1/35 German tank for £5, plus an Italeri Sherman in the same scale for £10.. plus some figures to go with it, a book about the 'Mustang Pioneer Group' (based at Boxted of'course), some bases and ground scattering material, and a couple of 1/72 aircraft kits, including a Matchbox kit for £3.. :) Bought mainly from the 'under the table' offerings rather than the dealers this time.. which explain the favourable prices.. :) Hoping to make it to the RAF Museum Hendon model show in a couple of weeks, but won't spend much money.. instead I hope to focus on getting some footage / photos of the Defiant, the Bf 110 NightFighter and the Heinkel He 111.. :) Your Karas is a beauty of a model, as always.. great video, always a pleasure to see what you have been up to.. :)
Seeing as you're an avid Land Rover fan, there's a programme on Tuesday at 7pm about the restoration of Series 1 that was left in a barn for 41 years. It's on 4seven (Sky channel 140). It's hosted by Philip Glenister of Ashes to Ashes/ Life on Mars fame. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing, but there you go. Oh & The Polish bomber looks nicely weathered, a great job Sir.
The Panels Pré-Shading technique you have used is pretty slick !!! It gave life to your Paint !!! Most excellent Build ! I will use that on a Tank and see where it takes me? Have a great time at the show !
First of all, congratulations on another magnificent build. The Karas has come out looking absolutely fantastic. There's something about those inter war aircraft designs that evoke the pioneering direction that aviation was starting to take. It's such an interesting subject, and wonderfully executed. Secondly, well bowl me over with a feather, the Hellcat is back on the bench. I didn't see that coming Thirdly, the Helldiver........I knew it
Could you advise me what enamel paint you think best replicates CHROME (as for motorcycle forks) and able to be paint brushed applicated? Thank you, Paul
I use a spray can called 'TOA Spray quick drying acrylic lacquer' made by the TOA Paint (Thailand) Co. Ltd. - gives a lovely mirror finish, and you can squirt a little into a cup if you want to brush it on. I found it in a shop selling auto touch-up spray cans.
impressive detail on that cokpit! its beautifful Gary! another professional build Sir! you were restleling back there?:) kits that wrestle.. huum.. you know what? that Helldiver ACTUALLY is not bad at all considering the age of it! but that wingfold "sistem"... I hope your ok my friend! always a pleasure to watch your videos.. oh.. P.S. - i´ve bought the Eduard Dual Combo Mig 21... you build it last year, and all i can tell is.. my 1/144 scale opinion changed.. for much better!
Great job!!! Your "Polish Khaki" is propably right. I'm not an expert, but as I know: 1 the actual pre-war khaki in Poland, was looking... brown (earth-brown, sh*t brown, or whatever it's called). Just brown, not too dark, with quiet big saturation. BUT: 2. A weeks before German invasion in 1939, the Polish HQ ordered repainting aircrafts with the new colour. And your colour can be quite similar (As I've heard, there are fire-storming discussions about it, between Polish warbirds-lovers ;). Of course only some machines were painted. And this colour was propably still more brown than green (EDIT: in fact I don't know...). Greetings from PL! PS: I'm waiting for P-11c, with tri-color painting. :)
+Voinar010 Cheers, mate! I tried to get a variety of shades going so that at least one, somewhere on the airframe would be about right! That's the thing, I bet no two planes ever looked the same, especially the Russians because by the latter stages of the war, these things were getting painted with whatever they could find, so who's to say what's right and what's actually wrong?
+MakingModelsAgain I think that it was one colour (propably from one factory), wich hasn't enough time to fade out from weather. But in fact, who knows the truth about "Polish khaki"? ;) Russians are another story- when they produced so HUGE numbers of aircraft monthly, they were painting them with everything in sight. The most interesting subject are the African and Maltan RAF fighters. Shortage in supply + extreme sun + human invention (RAF desert camo was very unpopular at least on Malta) = flying circus of colours.
MakingModelsAgain i will be there both days but not all day on the saturday it will just be the morning. but will be there all day sunday :) ill make sure i say hello
Mr.Gary,so you are quit a celeberty, first foto and now a magazine, very nice, hahaha, the Karbas is looking great, good job and nice weathering, two thumbs up, and no whiskey in the tea????
Such wonderful work, painting and weathering is fantastic. one thing i've notice is if the whole plane is weathered why are the decals look almost pristine?
I think... it often came down to the paints they used on the national markings being different from that on the airframe. Also, in a lot of cases, the Japanese, for example, it came down to pride. There are examples of Zeros with hardly a scrap of paint left on them, but the Hinomarus are still shining bright. I think...! :)
Well Gary your frame-er fame- of your skills as a modeler, tea drinker, beer con-a- sur and Land Rover aficionado are well earned. No doubt the build article in SAM is just more of the same renowned you enjoy, being heaped on you at home.......by your dog. -- Silly grin inserted here -- I too enjoyed your current weathering technique, it has a "look" to it that is most, ah, weathered - go figure. [thumbs up]
Ki-28 came with camo ;) Anyway, absolutely perfect model for OOB, I want to builds this kit. But looks a bit strange for full OOB..hmmm, what have you done there when we didn't watch?
i love your video mate....tea with drops of lemon....xaxaxax....great video amazing build like always....but ok..Gary???TEA???AND I AM SORRY I SEE THAT VIDEO 2 YEARS AFTER...SORRY GARY...
Just got a glimpse of the Karas' over on the 100 years of Bombers GB reveal - guess it was overwhelmed by the big bruisers on show - the single engined planes did seem a little overshadowed. Oh well, better luck next time!
Actually, I help with the judging on the ISM GBs so even though I entered the GB, my build isn't in the running. Some beautiful big birds on there though...
MakingModelsAgain Ah, that explains it - thought it was a bit mean it didn't even rate a mention ... but seriously, there should be separate categories based on size (or number of engines) - just MHO! BTW, aren't we due for the next update? Looking forward to it!
Another wee montage video will be coming along shortly. Uhm, yeah, the Karas only scraped into the bomber category by the skin of its teeth - it's classed as a light recon bomber with a bomb load that would barely manage to ruffle some daisies. :)
Very nice little racer plane, congrats! However, I'm sick to death of seeing so many hobby magazines these days using that bland, all white backgrounds. It's still a *HUGE* pet peeve of mine. Fine work on that PZL 23b too!
You, sir, are an inspiration! I really like your choice of subjects. Always something a bit off the beaten track. ;-) I have not been able to build for a while but looking at you, and others here at UA-cam really gets the inspiration flowing. If you want, check out our local club forum. (works quite well with google translate swedish ->english) umbs.proboards.com/
Gary, Karaś looks absolutely stunning! It's absolute masterpiece :)
Cheers,
Radek

Fantastic work on the PZL Gary! Congrats on the magazine article.
Cheers, Tommy! Once the mag has had it's run, I'll get a video done on the Caudron to show it in detail.
The painting and weathering on that thing is simply sublime! Well done!
Thank you my Lord. :)
Interesting way of doing the weathering, looks great Gary, including the out of register decals.
Great work Gary another top build mate. Will have a look out for the mag buddy looks fantastic from the photos
Very nicely done. I love the photo showing the pre-weathering colours. I've always wondered what sort of effects that would achieve.
The painting technique has worked really well. Very impressive Definitely one to try - thanks for the inspiration
awwww exquistit job on the karas :) it looks indeed like a sky landrover. the windows and the frames are very delicate looking. love it!
Cheers, Michael. I'm enjoying very much indeed making these oddballs of the sky. :)
Thank You for the nice review of this plane. Looks detailed, that's a really cool model. Greetings from Poland :-)
Very nice quality finish on the Karus aircraft, looks brilliant and great update as well.

Congrats on the article and cover pic....and what a great job you did on the bomber, such a unique aircraft, you really did her justice...
Thank you Col. She is an odd-looking bird, but after seeing dozens of Spits and Me109s, it makes a refreshing change to see the odd-balls!

It's been far to long since we have had one of your videos (review aside) - made my week :)
congrats on the mag with the blue racer. the bomber looks eggcellent!
Thank you sir. Ak, the yolks on you! :P
The Panels Pré-Shading technique you have used is pretty slick !!! It gave life to your Paint !!! Most excellent Build ! I will use that on a Tank and see where it takes me? Have a great time at the show !
Cheers, Norm. I'm looking forward to trying this method when I get round to doing the blues on the Hellcat.
Looking forward to see that !!! That would be wicked to see this Faded Effect on a Blue Hue ! Most excellent !
Nice vid Gary! Look forward to the sky servant build

Great one, would love to see the french racer but can't buy the SAM in Slovakia...well hope you'll make a video on that sometimes later on... :)
Very nice model!!
Inspiring paint too!
As usual, a great result. Nice work.
Danke!

Thank you sir, alas no spirits were used in the making of this video. Alas, indeed....
My heart just shun when you said you would be starting on the hellcat again
Nádherný kúsok . Poliak je super . Mám ho rozostavaného v mierke 1/72 od Smer .Budem sa snažiť ho dokončiť . Pekná práca .
Heller did a reasonable 1/72 kit of the P23. I built mine way back in the early 80s.
great job as always

PZL looks beautiful, must buy one for myself
+niarlatotepbasset It's a great kit and fortunately, all the clear parts fit well!
MakingModelsAgain ...when I get my hands on this model, since there isn't any to buy in my country, I will do some crazy paint scheme on it...
i love your video mate....tea with drops of lemon....xaxaxax....great video amazing build like always....but ok..Gary???TEA???AND I AM SORRY I SEE THAT VIDEO 2 YEARS AFTER...SORRY GARY...
+NIKOLAS LAGOS I know, I know, but we were out of the good stuff that day! ;)
Your Fokker D XXI had an outstanding camo scheme (and paint job overall)! That wasn't too long ago, was it?
Great build, this Karaś... by the way.

Awesome looking model... Too bad Poland didn’t have enough Karaś planes to defend themselves from Germans in 1939
