  • We reserved a night at a fire lookout, in the mountains near Gold Beach/Brookings, Oregon. We also got a bonus night, because of unclaimed vacancies following our night!
Access to this place requires a reservation via Recreation.gov. Driving up involves 20+ miles of gravel road driving... plus, if you have a low clearance vehicle or lack AWD/4WD, a short hike along the last portion of the road may be required as it's very bumpy and steep! Hikers can hike up via a network of trails in the area, but if you don't have a reservation, please do not bother other guests who paid to rent it.
There is a porta potty on site, and the cabin has solar powered lights. No propane stove; the website is incorrect about having a propane stove here. You should bring your own drinking water, toilet paper, bedding, and firewood + wood splitter if planning to use the wood stove.
It never hurts to contribute a tub of cleaning wipes (etc) to these cabins, or bring your own at least, since the effort to maintain them is largely communal amongst the guests who reserve it! So... Leave it better than you found it. 💚
    Enjoy!

A little history, copied from cherylhill.net:
"Snow Camp Mountain was a lookout site starting in 1910 with a tent camp. A 14×14′ cab was built in 1924. An R-6 flat cab was built in 1958. The lookout was added to the recreation rental program, but burned down in the 2002 Biscuit Fire. It was rebuilt in 2004."

When the wind stops, Snow Camp, and nearby Quail Prairie lookouts are among the quietest places on Earth.

I didn't realize the biscuit fire got so close to the ocean. Before the Biscuit fire, that area was my favorite place in the world. It was utterly unique in geology and had many plants found nowhere else.

@@robertbruno7322 whenever I see badly burned places like this for my first time, my imagination goes wild trying to imagine what it looked like pre-fire...

I've stayed at Snow Camp several times before the 2002 fire leveled it, assisted in the rebuilding effort, then stayed there a couple more times.
The truly sad part about the fire was the lost visitor journals that was the basis for Snow Camp Lookout: View with a Room Mouse Included.
    Glad you enjoyed your visit.

We stayed there before the Biscuit fire burned it down. It still had the original Osbourne Fire Finder in it then.

@@consentofthegoverned5145 I wish I could know what the view looked like before the fire. As you can see, the forest hasn't healed very well sadly

@@kayla_sulak That hill has actually burned twice in the last 20 years. The pine trees that were there before 2003 were a very stunted by wind and were not much higher than the manzanita brush around them.
