- In this Two Storey Extension video, Ground Level Up Brickwork to Floor joists, Tony explains the next phase of the process, taking the building up to dampcourse and laying imperial blues, then moving onto the blockwork using Ytong blocks and Celotex insulation. The next stage is then using a beam lift to install steel beams. Pete then finally runs through how to cut and fit timber joists into steel beams.
HOW TO USE A BEAM LIFT: • HOW TO USE A BEAM LIFT...
PLEASE NOTE: we’ll endeavour to answer questions and comments as soon as possible depending on our work schedules.

You guys should be getting a grant from the NHBC or some other organisation, for taking the time to share what appear to be the very best of working practices. Well done!
An in depth on the construction of an addition to a building must see for all who are considering such work so that it gives them an in site of how it should be done so they know what a builder should be doing. Fantastic channel Master craftsmanship wish you all the best.

Tight ship Tony, looks like a great team of lads.
Hi Steve they are awesome guys very lucky to have them, there’s an old saying you are only as good as the team around you, so true all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE I was also taught during nearly 25 years in the RAF, lead by example. Quality work as ever mate.

Looking good. 👊🏻
Hi Dan hope you are all well mate all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE all good thanks Tony. That house looks familiar.. 😉.
👊🏻
Wall plate next mate then it’s the roof 👍
@@BuildWithAE 😬. 🙏
Great communication run through of the project I shall go back to start of build and enjoy from the start, Jim the brickie must have worked in Germany 👍
Hi Wheaton bread good to hear, Jim is a cracking bloke he worked in Germany for many years, he was in the first wave of bricklayers to go over, love hearing some of the cracks they used to have definitely an old time trowel all the best Tony 👍
lovely channel
Thank you very much! Have an awesome weekend 👍
@@BuildWithAE SAME TO YOU,CHEERS
And that weep vent looks neater because it doesn't act as a ventilator to air the cavity like the bigger perp sized ones - its just an outlet for water l, I prefer it too looks a lot neater
Oh yes , plenty of bricklaying action this week , what the hell is that bond ? Never seen that before .
As always the attention to detail is second to none . Really like that later , the genie can be quite awkward to use . And lastly love the steels with the nuts pre welded on , always forward thinking . Fail to plan .. plan to fail👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Hi Steve it’s funny how people have said about the bond but I always like to match the existing house, it was a discussion had with Alex and Jim but we all conclude to keep to the original style but Was it a bad call it’s just now down to personal views. It’s snowing here night mare all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE . Always follow the existing . Your lads completely showed up the original brickwork , lovely job .👌🏼.
I’ll have to google it and see what it’s called or maybe ask Rodian, he’s well up on his bonds .
Still cold here but dry .
We will soon warm up tomorrow, we are starting a conservatory ..... hand digging ! 😁💪🏼🧱👍🏽
I think it Flemish Garden Wall Bond or some times call Sussex Bond
@@BuildWithAE Nice one thanks Tony 👌🏼🧱🧱🧱👍🏼
Hi Tony, I was just looking at the threshold detail with this block & beam flr , just wondering if your beams where going the other way running toward the opening, do you put weak mix in the cavity to level with the top of the beam then extend your insulation and screed across to the inner face of the outer skin, cheers pal, excellent & videos excellent resource 👍!
That lift looks so much more civilized than a Genie. I have never fitted anything under joists on those kind of blocks, so it looks like I'm going to have to read up on the manufacturers recommendations. I presume its a decoupling layer of sorts, or maybe its due to the materials used in the block manufacture that affect the timber?. Thanks for the video. 🤩 Del.
Hi Del it’s the cable that always put me off Genie the lifting weight only 200 to 250kgs. The blocks it’s something that I read in the technical book some time ago with this block might not be the same with others all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE My builders use the Ytongs for everything so will deffo be looking into this as joists is my department. Have a nice weekend. 🍺
@@BuildWithAE Found the technical data PDF on the Ytong blocks and will be fitting 4mm Bituminous felt or neoprene under all my joists from now on. My builders would have never searched or checked for this info, so thanks for putting that detail into your video. 👍 Cheers.
Can you tell me the name of those bricks that you have used. The ones with the ripple effect cheers
I can tell you guys care and are good, standing wheelbarrows up in line.
Hi lvegotaporche much appreciated we do this then you know they have been cleaned nothing worse than dirty wheel barrows, shovels and cement mixers it’s the basics of a good site hate lazy ness. I’am bit of a petrol head if you don’t mind me asking what Porsche do you have all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE hi, not got a Porsche anymore, sold.
Had a replica cobra few years back , but had to go when son came along.
Just using all my savings now on property renovation on a bungalow I bought and adding another level, so skint 😬
@@ivegotaporscheandalambo3318 I know that feeling mind you there’s always later all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE yeah, great work your doing Tony.
Same work ethic as me, I run paving and landscaping business and attention to detail is everything.
I'm actually going up on my bungalow, doing it myself and can't wait to start.
Getting motivation by watching this stuff, cheers stew
nice job. I couldn't quite see but are the cavities continuous. If so is there insulation in the original house?
Hi twmd the cavity’s folds there not continuous and would you believe no insulation in the existing house all the best Tony 👍
Hi Tony did your brickies dry lay that DPC or did they bed it on? cant tell in the vid, great video as normal
Hi Eldorado DPC for beams are dry laid further DPC are thin bedded all the best Tony 👍
Hi from Bulgaria
Hi Vladimir all the best Tony 👍
Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I much prefer to see the new brickwork tied directly into the existing old brickwork. It probably doesn't make any difference but I think it looks better for sure. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Danny totally agree thats why we like to do it, I’am like you old fashioned all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend
@@BuildWithAE do you ever tie the old/new footings together below where you bond bricks in case of any settlement on the new side?
Hi @@coops6621 most definitely we blocked to the front and then flood the concrete above the footing levels when you can’t slate pack them all the best Tony
Great video and detail Tony, nice clean work area too, good for the mind!!
Do the joists no longer have to sit on a wall plate? I’m doing my own new build soon (just a plasterer by trade) and looking for most efficient ways of building . Cheers Pal
Hi Sam you can but in are case we had parapet walls on top if you don’t have that situation then yes crack on with wall plate all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE brilliant, thanks for the reply.
Good explaining of how and order of things
Think you should explain to your brickys how to bond
Hi David please let me know we’re in question about the bond we can only become better if we know thanks Tony 👍
Well have a good look at it on the front right hand corner you have a closure up against the reveal which is a total no no
Great work as always guys. Couldn't quite work out which cavity wall insulation you were using, was it Kooltherm 106 with a breathable lining on the opposite side to the foil lining ?
Hi Nick I think it was K108, personally I prefer the k106 all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE Thanks Tony that makes now makes sense, can I just ask out curiosity, what was the thickness of the insulation and the cavity gap👍 Cheers Nick
Great video. Just to confirm, the inner leaf was made from thermalite blocks? Would that be similar to Aircrete?
Hi Martin 7N Thermalite, they are two different makes of blocks but each company would say different all the best Tony 👍
The steal beam never had much of a rest on the outside what if the block crumbles and the beam drops down ?
What are the name for those lifts pls?
What are the profiles you were talking about I don't think they are the furfix's that are used to tie new buildings to old as you seem to have cut the old brickwork out. Have a good weekend and keep safe.
Hi Kevin I was talking about the door and window profiles for the bricklayers all the best Tony 👍
Hi great work as usual. Are you ever worried having the joists flush with the bottom of the steel as the wood will shrink as it dries and the steel will not? It maybe happen to "a friend" I know, ended up cracking the plaster!
Hi Eddy much appreciated it’s a great shout if the timber was soaked then definitely a good 6mm tolerance to have the joist below steel, it was really hot and the timber was beautiful and dry so I was happy with the shout, the other thing we do is double board because of fire and there is a timber stud wall detail on the joint line so I do try to cover everything well all most everything 😂 all the best Tony 👍
Thanks for all you do. Your a wealth of knowledge. Have a great weekend
Looking great. Can I ask if you would always tie in the brickwork with the existing building? I had an extension built around 2 years ago and the builder didn’t tie it in as he said it just cracks over time. He left an expansion gap and filled with mastic. where that expansion gap is around the Same place in the inside where the steel picture frame is the plaster board keeps cracking. It’s cold to to touch all the way round even on the floor in between the existing and new. No matter how many times it’s been repaired it continues to crack.
Hi A Mac it’s really hard to call regarding cracking, yes we all ways tie in I just prefer to all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE Thanks for the reply. Someone suggested drilling holes in it and filling with expanding foam. Might give this a go. Have a good weekend.
Use a closed cell foam because of moisture 👍
@@BuildWithAE Thanks mate will do 👍🏼
Hi Tony would a closed cell polyurethane spray foam be suitable because it would help insulate the steel frame
at least
Imperial bricks - We’re the interior blocks imperial too? How did you line up the wall ties? Cheers
Hi Slashley we always use slightly longer ties because it helps when using metric blocks to imperial bricks but always a pain all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE I see. I guess u’d have to bend them down to the outer wall to stop water running along the tie into the inner wall. Cheers
Spot on
I always wonder: insulating the brick and block but when you have massive windows and doors.......surely they'll be freezing so does it really do much?
Hi Matty every bit helps even the glass is Argon filled to improve the U Value on everything and underfloor set at 150mm not 200mm centres all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE cheers mate 👍. Decent channel you seem really genuine trustworthy and skilled. Keep it up, I could never deal with the stress of these jobs delegating jobs, pricing, materials etc. Well done
existing building pointings really rough, must have been repointed... new bit will make the old look bad ;)
Interesting how different the terminology is from the US.
Hi psidvicious that’s so true I love the word lumber instead of timber even thou I’am English with a bit of Welsh, I do also switch from imperial to metric depending on what I’am doing have a awesome weekend all the best Tony 👍
Attention to detail? What's that bond all about on the pillar.........?
Hi Mark which pillar thanks Tony
Why didn't you use a wall plate to put the joist on. Perhaps a recess in the joist to make it sit flush on the wall would have been good. Better tie down using triple grips and no pgi straps through for tie down either? You must have a reason but I would like to know .
Hey parapet wall and thermal continuity that’s it with warm roof thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍
why brick house like this does not have columns?
Hi anjing it’s a 1930 house I think that’s why I think all the best Tony 👍
No wall plate t
Hi John we could of done but it has a parapet wall all the way around so I don’t like using timber under the block work all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE makes sense
Hurry up and upload more videos need something good to watch
Hi David much appreciated got the podcast coming soon as well with lots awesome content all the best Tony 👍
High standards as per usual.
The wee bricks are queen closers... But you're the boss. Closures if you must 😏
Hi Barrington Smythe thanks for the info we are matching to the house but i must confess I’am no expert qualified bricky, there has been a few comments about the queen closers which I thought was never an issue all the best Tony 👍
I was just taking the piss that you were calling them closures Tony. 😁
This is why I became a chippy 👍
Accent is thick as a brick.
