    I made weed tea several years ago and I used it in my borrowed garden at the next-door neighbor's. Well, as you discovered, it STINKS so BAD! I do live in the city and that smell does linger for several days--particularly in the heat of the summer. I think I got away with doing it 3 times before the neighbor forbade me from using it again. I wasn't too upset! Anyway, I do hope to own my own home somewhere that I can make weed tea in peace, because I found it to work fantastically on my plants.

    We use weed tea here and yes, it's smells yucky but the benefits are really good. Maybe try putting weeds in a mesh type bag so that it's like a tea bag, dip this into the water to ferment. A layer of straw on top helps to absorb some smells. A tap at the side of the container will help fill the watering can so that you do not get the can covered in the concoction. Lift up some soil near your plant, pour some liquid then put the top soil back and this will help eliminate some of the smells. Hope this helps.

    You can make a faster smell free weed tea by osmosis with brown sugar. It's a Korean Natural farming process. It smells sweet and sour-ish. It fully extract the nutrients from the plant and you can put them in the compost, to the worms or even pigs(chopped down) or pigs.

    I would recommend using an airpump attached to an airstone when steeping your tea. It will promote a lot more aerobic bacteria which is just as beneficial to your plant. Plus, that nasty smell won't be as bad and much disease can be prevented. Happy growing!!

    Perfect timing! I'd just picked my first cucumbers of the season. May I add because of the possible mosquito problems and with Zika becoming popular in the news, I may suggest holding off on experimenting on garden teas for awhile.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  8 років тому

      That would be wise. Of course if you do it within 3-5 days that is not enough time for larvae to grow. last year I let if ferment longer, but I don't plan on doing it this year.

  • @ncooty
    @ncooty 8 років тому +2

    Thanks for sharing another interesting trial (and recipe). I think you're right about the anaerobic bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria and their predators are typically detrimental to plants. However, the tea probably did little harm given that your soil is already very healthy. Also, cucumbers are vines, suggesting that they prefer soils that support woody plants--i.e., soils in which the ratio of fungi to bacteria is high. That means cucumbers probably don't benefit greatly from the addition of soil bacteria (unless you have very low levels, as would be indicated by poor soil structure). By contrast, weeds tend to grow best in soils with a high ratio of bacteria to fungi. More compost and woody ground cover will increase soil fungi, which would probably benefit your cucumbers.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  8 років тому +2

      The difference of bacteria and fungi dominated soils is really interesting.

    one thing I love about your videos is that you don't tell us we need to buy specialized fertilizers for each type of plant - I often click on videos for advice with certain crops and then get exasperated when it's all about buying like 3 different types of fertilizer to maximize your tomato produce. I get why people would do that, but for me the whole point of gardening is to maximize self sufficiency and use the sustainable and affordable elements I have at hand, so I'd much rather focus on composting and enriching my soil in other ways! I definitely want to try making a borage tea next year.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  5 років тому +2

      It really doesn't have to be too complicated. I produce more than enough tomatoes for my family by taking a less intensive approach. If you want to produce commercially, it makes sense, but not for the weekend home gardener

    I think this is a great idea. We let burdock grow like crazy to fill up the compost pile, why not make it into soluble tea? I want to compliment you on the sky at 4:50. So realistic. Thanks for another garden lesson and beautiful video. Your garden looked great last year. As we watched it I said to Jesy, "This was recorded about the time we were going to meet up with Siloé at The Book Thing." Which was the end of last May. Abs.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  8 років тому

      It's an interesting concept. Maybe it will make you appreciate ground ivy even. It is an effective way of killing it without leaving viable seed or root. But the smell!!! Anyways, the sky at 4:50 is real though. No filters applied. I have done HDR in the past in a sky shot or two but not this one. It's not very common for Maryland's muggy hazy summer skies, that's for sure. The footage was from around May - June so a little when you guys went to the Book thing. The book thing unfortunately burned down. Very sad. But I think they are rebuilding.

    • @LolitasGarden
      @LolitasGarden 8 років тому

      Oh no! That place was a bit of a fire trap. All that musty paper…
      I'm not certain, but I read that ground ivy is allelopathic. I personally would avoid pouring it's nasty jugloneishness on my precious plants.
      What do you shoot HDR video with?!

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  8 років тому

      Wow, thanks for the tip. I didn't know it could be harmful. I don't think I used it in this tea I showed in the video, but it does grow rampant everywhere. I will look into this, and I'll probably start sharing your disdain for it.
      The HDR Shots I did were really just stationary shots doing two separate exposures and compositing them. Nothing too fancy. I used my regular camera.

    • @LolitasGarden
      @LolitasGarden 8 років тому

      I know what I'll give you for Christmas - a pound of crimson clover seed to out-compete your stinky old ground ivy. Pollinators love it, it fixes nitrogen, self sows and it keeps your soil nice and cool.

    My sweet hubby did something similar accidentally last year when cleaning gutters. All of the gunk-which has partially fermented in the gutters went into the wheel barrow, it sat there smelling and decomposing about 3 weeks the rainwaters had filled it up needless to say. We poured it on top of our compost f pile covered with a bunch of dry green k lawn waste, mostly grass clippings. We used this as a lot of our bas soil -from the compost for this years garden, So far everything is growing well. Just cleaned gutters for this year i'll be adding water to the garden can later today, I think side dressing with weed water is brilliant. I also agree the smell isn't quite corpse flower, but it is pretty putrid. Thank you for an interesting informative and entertaining video as always. I'd be sauteeing the yellow into an Asian flavor profile methinks. That lilac bush- I think? is spectacular! That salad looks light and refreshing.

      Yes, homegrown is always best. While homegrown tomatoes are superior because of their flavor, homegrown cucumbers are all about the crisp texture. You can't get the same water content from store-bought compared to freshly picked.

    Interesting video again! 💚
    But;
    1. I make it in buckets with lids so I don't have to smell it until I have to use it. Nettle tea for growth in the first part of the growing season, until flowers start emerging, comfrey after that.👍
    2. I think it's supposed to be diluted like 1:10 or until it looks like strong tea. The fact that you watered them with undiluted compost tea might actually have caused the disease on the plants as you suspected. 🤔 As with all fertilizing, if you overdo it the cells in the plant become "loose" and watery which makes the plant more prone to disease.

    Your yard seems so lush and diverse--much different than the sterile well-trimmed grass yards I imagine your neighbors have. How do your neighbors feel about your yard? Have you gotten any negative feedback? My neighborhood is HOA restricted as to what we can put in our yards--no veggies in the front, mostly grass lawn, etc. It seems so odd that most new neighborhoods today actually discourage growing your own food.
    BTW--your background music is a great touch to the video quality.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  8 років тому +3

      Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the music! Yes, my yard is a bit of a jungle, and at times, especially later-on in the season it can be considered disheveled by some. My neighbors are great. Some love it, and I suppose some might not like it as much. I live in an older community that has no HOA, we intentionally got a place that has no HOA. I would never ever ever willingly buy in a HOA community. I understand the point of HOA, but I feel that they exist to make houses less of a home/place and more of a product; sellable to the market. I don't want to live inside a walmart or target. My lifestyle is not up for sale for the right price. Besides, there are laws already in place that deal with true nuisance. What color you paint your house, or what curtain you hang in your window, or what species of plant matter you plant in the ground is not a nuisance, so what they are doing is just micro-managing in my opinion. But then again people choose to live in HOA communities (except children I suppose) and if they didn't want to, the market would show that.

    • @mountaintroll7864
      @mountaintroll7864 7 років тому +1

      lacto bacillus is the bacteria you are cultivating for fermented foods like kraut and pickles. the smell you had was probably from the aerobic top. treat your next batch like kraut by making sure all the weeds are completely submerged and it may not smell as bad. you can also add up to 2% salt to select for those bacteria. remember these things are meant to be diluted at 10 to 25%.
      also some stuff is just stinks i can attest for the fish tea. when that stuff stops nocking flies off a gut truck it is ready which can take up to 8 months depending on where you live. covering the container will greatly reduce the smell.

I'm going to try doing this in a galvanized trash can with a lid on it. We have tons of wild growing mustard here and it is a known soil enricher.

    Hi Siloé! Your videos are the best! Bravo! My weed tea smells horribly rank too, but it is a great feeling to put those weeds to work instead of sending them off to the landfill, which is where they often go since my compost pile never gets hot enough to kill the seed. I was hoping the tea would solve this problem. Do you put your rotted weeds into your compost afterward?

    • @suburbanhomestead

      I believe that simply covering it with mosquito netting so that there is no gap for mosquitos to enter should be enough. Also if you let it sit for no more than 7 days before using it completely, you will most likely interrupt the development of larva in the water.

    You need to add 50 grams of jaggery into the container and cover it . In addition to weeds, you can add vegetable and fruit peels all of them shredded. Remove the lid for few minutes every day to let off the gas.. Fermentation will be better and smell will not be as repulsive and the liquid is nothing but ethyl alcohol. Dilute the liquid fertilizer with water in the ratio 1 : 4 and use. I live in the city and use liquid fertilizer twice a month . Trees and plants remain healthy, productive and plant infestation is avoided if liquid is used regularly.

    You thnk that smelled bad, I mix up a concentrate of chicken manure tea. I call it "Liquid Death." Merlyn's Beard! It's perfect! So perfect I daresay one drop would kill us all!" Harry Potter fans know where that comes from :)

      I got the tip from an old Italian gardener who swore by it. I've used it before, then not used it. I got better results with it, but who knows?

    Hello friend how are you i tried this anaerobic method of weed tea and i couldn't notice if it worked or not but the plants didn't dislike it as it did not die on me though i did not try on cucumber specifically. It was normal i guess. But the smell was something i tell you though. Take care

      Glad to hear from you again. I hope your terrace is producing lots of stuff. It would be interesting to make a controlled trial to see if this has benefit, and maybe to an aerobic mixture to see if it is better.

    I was thinking about the subject of how people have allergies. I bet this would help someone that has allergies by eating the vegetable. Maybe you know homeopathic kind of way. I think I will try this when I can finally start growing after our last frost. :) It might even repel some bad bugs also. Just a thought..What do you think?

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  6 років тому

      That I'm not sure. I don't think people are allergic to weeds other than the pollen.

    The only thing you did wrong was put the weeds in the barrel. Put the weeds in a potato bag or flour bag add a heavy stone , tie a knot ,then put it in the barrel. Stir occasionally.🤔
