The real trick to getting to the end of Cosmic Ocean is to leave your soul and your will to live at the door. Spelunky HD beat both of those out of me pretty thoroughly so I'm good to go for that 7-54 rolling-lizard-into-endless-fall disgrace!
hey blargh, i know you're a pretty big yter but you're also quite epic maybe we could play sometime when multiplayer comes out? my steam username is rumpletrashkins (or trash123) hit me up if you get the chance and want to, eh?
So Hundun is based on "Hundun" in Chinese mythology, which is a "world egg" motif according to wikipedia, and it also means "primordial chaos". I'm supposing the Cosmic Ocean is literally that primordial chaos born from the world egg, but I wonder what else it could be based on, and I wonder what the Jellyfish are based on specifically. Does it relate in anyway to why the game is set on the moon?
For me, if there is nothing worthy at all at the end I don't see any reason to even try to go there. Just get to first level to complete the journal and that's it. I see no point in going further.
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem and what about when you finish the journal? Quit and never play again? I would love to have the constellation on my account as a tiny symbol that I made it. That my effort and multiple attempts paid off and I am among the best spelunky players. That's the goal. I'm obsessed with this game
I'm still salty about the guy that made a video about Spelunky 2's difficulty saying something like, this is why you would never finish Spelunky 2 (referring to 7-99) and I was like, WAS THAT A CHALLENGE, and so my journey to achieve a constelation has begone XD
@@NutInMyCrosshair I'll probably still play it when I want to. It is just joyful. But the torturous journal about getting to 7-99 just doesn't seem worth (or fun) at all.
I watched this a few hours ago, and got to CO for the first time today in an online match with a friend and a random (it was also my first eggplant run :) ). I immediately died to an elevator on 7-5. 7-5!
There is no in game reward that meets or exceeds the satisfaction of conquering a difficult enjoyable challenge. If you're taking on a difficult challenge just to acquire an item or see a cut scene then you probably aren't enjoying the gameplay that much and should probably go play or do something else that you have the ability to appreciate on a moment to moment level. If you aren't living in and enjoying the current moment you're focusing on the wrong things.
I think vlads caps is better than the Jetpack like the jetpack can get you some big height blah blah but like in neo Babylon you could just touch a trap and explode but vlads cape doesn’t have that problem cause it’s a cape so therefore vlads cape > Jetpack
The Constellation is the perfect reward for 7-99. It's simple, but it's unique to you and your journey. And it stays as part of the game forever so that the journey can never be forgotten. I wouldn't change it at all.
@@litapd311 Oh by that I mean that after you beat 7-99, the constellation you get will stay in the background in space back at the hub! (That's what the telescope is for) The constellation stays there forever and can't be lost (unless it gets overwritten if you clear 7-99 multiple times) I think you can also even see it in the background when taking the Olmec ship to Sunken City
Tip: if you have the alien compass you will be able to find the exits in cosmic ocean. However you will need to go through a more difficult path (assuming you do not do the Qilin skip), but since your goal is to finish 7-99 this should of course be no problem to you ;)
Cosmic ocean guide. Meanwhile me: "I hope one day I'll beat Olmec!" I got this game like 2 weeks ago, never played previous ones, I have the shortcut now for Olmec, but never beat him and I don't want to progress till I beat Olmec, it would feel cheap! 2-3 times I got to the very final layer though!
@@periclescomoeddie5215 good luck with that, I ended up beating him yesterday, had some really close calls but I did beat him. Not sure how I should proceed, i never really explored the jungles or got to Vlad's castle. Guess I'll start playing from 1-1 and going for Vlad's crown and with that try to go as far as I can get.
@@csubi907 Thanks for wishing me good luck, and congratulations on beating him yourself! At least I finally got to Vlad's Crown yesterday, so I will starting exploring the Jungle today.
@@periclescomoeddie5215 congrats! Vlad's crown is next on my list, I think I will leave jungle for later, I tried it before Volcana but that is way harder for me personally.
@@csubi907 When I first got to the jungle, it also felt way harder than Volcana. However, when I played multiplayer with a friend, he went multiple times into the jungle without me wanting him to, and it felt way easier. I'm starting to figure the place out. Anyways, good luck with Vlad's Crown!
About the not rewarding enough thing, I think it would be cooler and probably easier to implement would be when you beat 7-99 it gives you a random constellation. That way you would have definitive proof, you would have a thing to show that you beat a challenge that few other people have and you would have something to show for it.
The constellation adapts to your run, so even if your constellation has the same name as somebody elses, yours will probably be a different colour, and the stars will never be the same as somebody else's.
There's a reason challenges like this aren't more common and that's not because they are hard to program. The steps needed to get to the Cosmic Ocean are daunting but doable for most players willing to put in the runs, actually finishing it requires the type of effort that I doubt even 0.1% have. Letting around 5% of your players access an area that 98% of those loyal players will never complete is not what most folks would consider ideal. Maybe having a boss a half dozen floors in with a simple fork to continue or finish with the "best" ending would have helped, but I'm not sure.
Ive started being able to get to the cosmic ocean enough to get used to it. I definitly think just getting to the end is a good enough reward, it would feel worse if I couldnt make it and it was such a big reward
I would offer dev mode at the end. Once you beat cosmic ocean the game is no longer capable of throwing something new at you to keep your interest tied to it. Giving the player the ability to sandbox spelunky narratively suggests that you become a god for conquering the Universe.
I don't like the level 99 ending just because of how hard it is to get there and all of the possible one shots on the way, it's more of an endurance test if anything, instead of going all the way to 99 I expected you had to do something in the cosmic ocean that would unlock a boss or something, idk I'll never reach 99 anyways lol
Personally I'm kinda torn. Cosmic ocean gauntlet to 7-99 is pretty cool for daily challenges, but tbh I'm kinda disappointed there's no Cthulhu boss with all the clues pointing to him :D
The really funny thing is that I’m really good and are almost good enough to get to cosmic ocean, but I have only 5 characters so i wouldn’t be able to actually *look* at my constellation
