The Black Keys Dissect ‘Howlin’ for You’ And Show How It Influenced ‘Dropout Boogie’ | The Breakdown

- The Black Keys paid homage to the blues music that made them a band on last year’s Delta Kream. On Dropout Boogie, the follow-up to Delta Kream and their 11th studio album, Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney go back to the garage. Or at least to the sense of urgency that shaped 2010’s Brothers, the duo’s breakthrough LP that featured one of their best-known blues-rock monsters, “Howlin’ for You.”
In the latest installment of Rolling Stone’s series The Breakdown, Auerbach and Carney walked us through the making of “Howlin’ for You” in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, pointing out the similarities to their latest LP, out now, along the way.
“Dropout Boogie has a lot of elements that are shared with ‘Howlin’ for You’: simplicity, the directness,” Carney tells Rolling Stone. “I think that the urgency that that song was made with, we didn’t wake up the next day and want to open it back up. We got through the song, finished it and we were on to the next thing. That’s kind of how we like to work.”

As he gets older, Dan looks more and more like a scuzzy pawn shop owner, and I love it.
lmaoooo
Looks like he stays up all night...
Love how subtly funny these guys are in interviews. They just seem like a cool couple of dudes to hang out with.
they should do project with El-p cos they are so similar personality wise
@@torontotonto6189 El-p could be an honorary key, 100%. An El-p remix of any black key song would probably melt phones, so we’ll have to just imagine it.
I need to see them breakdown more tracks that would be awesome
ua-cam.com/video/elK0jHNAcR4/v-deo.html it’s not exactly a breakdown but more a technical breakdown of that works
Definitely
Remember listening to The Black Keys 15-20 years ago in high school and they still rock just as hard
I love it everytime Patrick cracks Dan up
One of the band that stay true to their music. They didn’t sell their soul
exactly
More than a few moments on dropout boogie sound like very early black keys stuff, beautiful album 👌
Such a humble and clean band. Idols.
Never seen Dan more talkative in an interview, Dropout Boogie has him feeling good
the best album. since 2010....i wish the keys did an album like brothers these days....just Dan and Pat, no fancy recording and mixing, just pure raw black keys blues....this album is a life changer if u didn't listen to it yet
I’ve seen them a few times now and I’m sad to say I won’t see them again unless it’s just Dan and Patrick. I wanted a delta Kream tour but instead we get six randoms on stage, playing the hits and going home. Last show I saw was the “Let’s Rock” tour and Dan said maybe 5 words to the crowd, then played for barely over an hour
Their most recent album is exactly what you're talking about. They did a lot of the songs in one or two takes
😳😳
If you want raw Dan and Pat, the first three albums make everything else they've done look like a Broadway production. "The Big Come Up" is one of the purest recordings you'll hear by a modern artist. Nothing but mics and a basement.
@@buringairline right? I grew up listening to them since the first album, my brother had almost all of their stuff including Chulahoma (which is just delicious), qnd when Brothers came out, it felt very fancy hahaha
I love these guys so much
Brothers is a masterpiece.
I love how easy eye picks some of the best indie artists playing right now...they even signed shannon and the clams...those guys know good music
Love every single thing about them!🙌
i saw them live a few weeks ago and holy shit they sounded so good. would def see them again
one of the best... because they are honest with life and music. thanks guys
I have watched this interview song breakdown several times making me smile and laughing
Thank you guys for this. Cool to get a look of what they do. Brothers was so good. It’s in my very limited vinyl collection. Dropout boogie may be soon.
The first time I heard this song i' ve followed them ever since!
Being from and always livin here man,,,these are OHIO DUDES. It’s like watching my buddies talk. Black Keys 4 Lyfe!
Brilliant and the honesty is 100%. No ego shit just pure music and it flows.
I love this band so much
One of their best interviews. Thanks
It would be so cool to hang with these guys for a day, and really understand there process, love them!!
The new album is SOLID. Love it
Best rock and roll band period
Love how that burst is just sitting there unassumingly
My band played several Black Keys tunes. I have to say...we KILLED them. We played them close to the originals, but added a twist to many of them. I loved playing Howlin for you...setting my trem with an intense chop....so fun. I love the Black Keys...thanks for all your music boys....the best.
What a Duo
This band gives me hope for the future of blues based rock
i love them so much
Love this song 🎵 🎶 🎧
my love for The Black Keys hasnt been shaken for the past 15 years at all, love them so much and they just dont know what making a bad song is
I remember hearing it in Limitless, such an awesome song, and movie
Dan is the reason I play a Supro 🤙🏼
When I bought brothers it was amazing beginning to end
No matter what video I see of the Keys now, I think of their "masterclass" and crack up.
I took the masterclass but I'm not naturally gifted so there was not so much they could do for me
This guys will always sound fresh.
I love hearing their inspiration on Tighten up! Yes!!! 🎼 💗
Vitamin C reference was dope.
Legends
Amazing album!
Radar has those ceramic converters that sound so damn good.
Dan looked asleep with his eyes open they were basically just interviewing Pat lol
Stoned.
@@DannybFlat01 or absurdly tired as he’s known to be a workaholic
@@Otis-Isom or both, most likely both
This was gold
I've listened to the Keys since I was three
This was fuc***** Fantastic! omg I would listen to an entire album song by song of them dissecting and discussing. Can we please get a studio tour! does anybody know what those freaking consoles are? And what was recorded and/or mixed through them? they are incredible sounding and looking!
Pat and Dan are awesome. With Dropout Boogie out, I've thought to open up the can of worms and listen back to the beginning, their early music for the first time. Holy hell this band is gold (to listen to, not on the ceiling, although maybe they think that from smoking so much weed!)
psychotic girl, weight of love and sinister kids are my favorites...i dont really like the soft tone on every track dan...even low hi was same super mellow vocal style...its cool but every now n then let loose dog...sinister kid is great example...the simplicity and tightness of Pgirl ...thats them in their primes imo
yayyyy!!!!
Awesome! great stuff
I'm going to be on top of the MUSIC INDUSTRY, I promise 😈👀🌎🚀
They need a podcast :D this is comedy gold
Dan looks like he ain’t slept in years
He struggles with insomnia I believe
Howlin for you sounds like nothing else I’ve ever heard. That’s why it’s so popular.
Gary glitter called he wants his song back
it really is rock n roll part 2 without the child stuff
joker stare dance song...same exact beat ...vitamin c my ass that has fifty times the snare anybody would know that
These guys are sick, love the Belle and Sebastian shout out.
Would REALLY love to know how they did the vocals on this song. Their slight distortion effect in the vocal chain is always very tastefully done yet still clear. I've read articles that 'claim" they know their trick, but I was hoping they discussed it here 🤷🤔
Thickfreakness. The early stuff 👍
Dropout boogie is not my favorite but these guys are still the coolest around
Dan's dark circles under his eyes is getting darker and darker he is turning into Batman at this point
Lool
I thought the same!! WTF
Cool guys 😎
The magic of Muscle Shoals
As a guitarist that was worth it just to hear those iso tracks- chafing standalone but brilliant in the mix.
Dan is fighting Mr. Sandman with both hands and feet .
That Trainwreck came from CA. I might have grown it. 😉
Man...Dan Auerbach looks ill...is he OK?
Excellent !! Dirt weed to train wreck !! haha too funny.
Brothers is a classic
Go see these Guys their Amazingly Great… Fun Dudes…
Made the record without protools; love the recording philosophy!
anyone know what pick up dan is talking about for the fuzz? i cant find what it is anywhere
What’s going on with dan’s face?
Anyone else notice Dan covered up a black eye 😂
He's a boxer
These guys kill
That beat is most recognizable as Gary Glitter’s stadium rocker Rock and Roll pt.1&2
That Les Paul peeking out asking to be played
Best Band on Earth
Where's the Howlin For You full length feature film though?
is radar the same program that's left the publish dates off this player
wow this is deep
Have you seen all the Margot Robbie lookalikes, please do a video on that!
Pat is hilarious!
Dan needs to sleep
I swear I thought that buzz was a cazoo
they didn't mention bassss ....such a fat tone! dayummmm
It was Mark Neil’s old Ricky 4001! Fun fact :)
Do you think Dan party alots? His eyes have crazy black shadows underneath
Is it me or does Dan look like he's got serious black eyes?
Yeah, he's a studio head that produces alot of albums for himself and other artists simultaneously. He probably has alot of sleepless nights. Plus I recall him mentioning on The Joe Rogan Experience that he has been doing some boxing training.
@@peterbadami4872 of course. The studio tan!
Best rock band ever❤
Sorry if I sound like a hipster, I love the black keys but their most popular songs are their worst songs
🤨
I agree, the only one, too afraid to love you, girl is on my mind, and oceans and steams are their best songs
I wouldn’t say worst maybe more mainstream. Either way they are still fun to listen to.
Lol 😆 basic
Exactly ...I saw them live in Manchester/Liverpool U.K in the early days ... loved Stack Shot Billy etc..then they got big -played arenas & it did go downhill ...sorry but that's my truth too
That's why Delta Kream was good
They need to talk to the person who cut this video about audio levels. I think I blew a speaker.
I dont think you can top Rubber Factory.....
Tchad Blake. Every f*ckin' time.
I trust anyone who names their record after a beefheart song.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RELEASE I’M YOUR PUPPET
God it looks like Dan hasn’t slept in weeks.
god bless captain beefheart
Try the band G20
how to they talk about howlin for you for 10 minutes and not mention the clear inspiration that riff took from The Cramps or the shades strolling after dark
cuz theyre trying to play off the clear plagiarism of garry glitters drums lmao
@@opppopp2322 you can't copyright a drumbeat 😂
Gnarly
I never cared much for the Black Keys. There's nothing wrong with their music, I won't tell you to change it if it's playing. It's just not my style, not enough blast beats haha.
Regardless, I always felt like they were super cool dudes who just fucken absolutely NAILED it. Like they really nailed it so hard. They just have their sound and for whatever reason it blew up so big.
Good for them, totally deserved.
