Hi Weezna. Interesting experiment. I do want to point out two things though for anyone else looking to do this. 1. It is ESSENTIAL to calculate the room volume, number of air exchanges required per hour, and hence the size of the openings into, and out of the box. Without this your system will be out of balance and you may even be causing a health risk to those in your room. 2. Best practice is to double the area of the opening out of the box from that into the box. I.e. If the duct going into the box is 6” diameter, it’s gonna need to be about 8” diameter out of the box. Again this should be based on your CFM calculations. You won’t be able to do this using flex duct though of course, but rather would need to build the box and line it with duct liner. Be sure to coat any exposed edges of the duct liner with sealant to prevent particulate release from the fiber glass. Remember - you, and all of those in your room will be breathing this air for many hours at a time. Feel free to message me if I can be of assistance. Cheers!
@Andrew Thanks for your insights. I am planning to build 2 similar boxes for my home theatre. However I am not planning to connect the ducts to my HVAC, instead I am thinking of connecting an intake and exhaust fan on the end that’s inside my home theater and the other end will be outside my home. Do you have any thought or feedback on this setup?
What if the flex duct goes from 6 in supply to a 12in inside the box and then a 12in output?

Big thumbs up for attempting to measure. There's a lot of talk on the net about duct silencers but very few numbers! I'm curious about wind noise, perhaps in your final video you could hold up a sound meter right at the opening with HVAC turned on?

I def. wldn't want fiberglass inside my vents for breathing concerns. the box seems to do the trick. why didn't they built those types of things in my house. I have a bit of an obsession with sound myself and found this video the other day after seeing another of a similar type.

Very nice and helpful video. Im also planing on building a miniature version of that for a 20cm Ø Vent Hole on the Wall. Though it's from a kitchen and thus i am also concerned about high pitch noise which i suppose will also be covered with fiberglas insolation?
awesome job!! Was just wondering the sides of your baffle boxes, because its one large piece of wood, would it not became a bass diaphragm? Rezonator. Do you think if I cut the large side panels into smaller pieces and have braces to break up the larger side panels, would that not reduce bass transfer? I Made Buffle box just like you, but i got humming sound from the hole.
hey, haven't caught up yet so idk what the final result is but I have a question. Why not add an additional baffle box inline that uses acoustic foam? that way you get the best of both worlds..

You sort of forgot one crucial information: How much better the Air Flow got. Are those the same fans you had on your first setup?
Quick question - what was the estimated TL in db between the example where you were just playing the speaker through the long insulated duct and the example where you played it through the baffle box? It looked like the duct alone provided about 27 db of transmission loss.

Great results. Since the tube internal surface is not smooth, sound bouncing will just scatter and reduce the transfer of sound, as we observed. I got a similar result with my build ua-cam.com/video/kzzgSzwVbtE/v-deo.html
