Sorry to hear that Barney was injured, but it show how resilient monkeys are, he just walked around. Satchmo is such a goof ball. Always willing to be social and play. Good info. Thanks to all who help the monkeys. I know it can be very demanding, but it so pays off.
I cannot express my joy at learning Ververts will adopt other monkey's babies. One series I watched on here said they didn't and orphaned babies usually die.
This is the beautiful thing about vervets and the reason we are able to rescue and integrate them into a new troop so quickly. Of course they all have their individual personalities, but in general the females have strong maternal instincts and want to care for babies. It means they are in human care for very little time; in some cases only a few days.
@Elite Soulfly Within any vervet troops, allomothering is very common. Female troop members who don't have babies will look after another's baby temporarily, giving that mother a chance to rest. They are also very very protective of any baby within their troop. I believe this is the basis for their ability and instinct to foster orphans long-term. Of course, not having natural babies in the troop may strengthen this instinct. This certainly seems to be the case within the Skunkey troop, who are fostering orphans for the first time.
I believe it depends on the type of monkey. Vervets seem very family orientated and are great mothers whereas some macaques are very mean to their babies and bite them and push them away.
Wondering about Gimli this week? Hoping that he’s continued to come out of his shell and is maybe even making friends? or started to drink milk from the bottle? ORRR maybe he and Rox started a sad boi band to tell the world about their painful pasts and are beginning to heal? :) The little guy stole my heart... ♥️
It says above that Barney walks on two extremities instead of four because of a bite between his shoulders. But I've seen videos (where people have them in their homes) of monkeys being 'punished' they call it when it's abuse, for going back on all four instead of walking upright. It should be illegal for people to buy monkeys and keep them in their homes. Some people just go out in the wild and steal baby monkeys from their mothers. I feel so bad for these little monkeys being abused and tortured and no laws to protect them. When the monkey gets bigger or they are just tired of taking care of it, then they get rid of it...in many sad ways. The lucky ones are given to this Vervet Monkey Sanctuary. It's wonderful to see so many caring people there.
Can you mention the troop at beginning of new integrations or update videos? what troop is Barney in? So when you introduce a new baby and mom can you please also state the troop or enclosure they are in, would help in relating which monkey is which with respect to the troop. Thanks Guys. Great Vid as usual.
Do you ever have an interaction with the Moms? Do they or the babies get periodic “check ups” or is it solely based on observation? 13:55 Hmm, I should watch the video first before diving in asking questions!
What happens to the male vervets when they reach sexual maturity? It is my understanding that they are normally forced to go join another troop or start their own troop.
Yes. When they reach sexual maturity they will be a bit aggressive and very playful. The majority will want to leave their maternal troop but if they don't they will be forced out. This is an Excellent question. I would love to know how this works at the Vervet Forest. *Dave if you could answer this question on how the males leave the maternal troop at the Vervet Forest that would be great.* Thank you!
As the males are vasectomised we dont have the same kind of problems as with a wild troop, so we monitor the aggression and only if necessary will we move a male and introduce him to a new troop
@@quantumspinup7418 We monitor aggression from the other troop males, but would only intervene if it results in persistent injuries. The troop monkeys usually get on quite well together.
I think he was going to do another documentary somewhere. Kyle, wherever you are, I hope you're staying safe and are hunkered down in with a cell phone and delivery service.
Mark Fergus I foster kittens and every once in awhile they do something that gives them some lameness. So far it has just turned out to be a strain and the next day they are obviously improved and in a few days you would not know they had hurt themselves. So glad all is well.
Poor widdle Barney - no question he is injured - so strange you were unable to find it upon examination - I'd say xrays were in order under the circumstances, to diagnose and thus treat whatever hurts him so much. Hate to see any animal in pain, and that peculiar behavior is definitely from pain. Dave, I very much would be gratified to know how you discovered that foster moms would adopt orphans, and how you discovered the system of giving the babies "milk" in the boxes meant to size them out at a year of age. You are a genius! How did you discover these amazing things? Also, the soy milk seems a very strange solution to formula for the babies, particularly since it is under examination at this time for creating female hormones in males, and having to do with menopause and hormonal changes in women. How do you account for this being the best for the babies? Why not cow, goat, sheep, camel, any kind of real milk for them? No criticism here - not one bit - just really desiring to know all these things. Thank you for your brilliance and dedication in caring for these monkeys, and the amazing solutions you have discovered in continuing their care! Thank you for all you do for them!
Monkeys seemed concerned over any infant, many years ago we use to wait until they where around a year old and go with them into an enclosure, which meant the monkeys had to be habituated to humans and caused many problems, we later tried just bringing 1 female that was very humanized in with us and the babies and slowly the system developed. Soy contains phytoestrogens, or plant-based estrogens its not the same as animal based estrogen which you actually get in milk, the information you find is from milk companies trying to make sure people continue to steal milk from cows, infant soya milk formula does not cause diarrhea in babies its more palatable and does not try turn you into a big fat cow which its made to do as its for cows.
I hear the one Dudes Irish accent poking thru. Soo lovely! Where r u from, maybe Northern Ireland? Ireland was the best trip I've ever had, beautiful landscape & even more beautiful people. Everyone was soo nice & hospitable, I really did not want to leave. I visited Irish friends I made over here in the states, they worked over here every summer in my parents pub, for years, so it was lovely to meet everyones family over there, finally. They are like my fam now, its soo awesome. We all cried in the airport on the way home, thats how close I was to staying. lol
Satchmo? You do realize that's Louie Armstrong's name right? Why would you name a monkey after a Black man? Are you secretly saying something about Black people? Just curious. Because I would have never done this.
are you implying we are saying something about white people and other ethnic groups - offences are in our own heads, one should maybe ask why you are asking such a question, are you subtle trying to imply something, just curious. Because I would never have asked such a question
Thank you for the video, they are lovely babies. Be safe!
Barney is so cute and a star of this video. Thank you for all your updates.
So adorable! I could watch them all day.
Dave, many thanks again for the incredible work you all do.
Take care & be safe everyone.
Dave, Thank you so very much for taking the time to share these wonderful experiences with the Vervets.

Love the video as usual! Hope all is well over there :)

Your videos are so educational and entertaining. Thank you and the whole stuff! ❤️
Fascinating. Thank you ❤️
One of the best eoisodes ever!!
Barney is cuter than any human baby I've seen ! Hope he manages to walk on all fours soon....
Yo cant have seen many nice human ones then.
@@leekinesis9654 noop, I prefer animal, esp monkeys (54 yrs)
You have the ONLY Disneyland in the world that is still open.
that was good
🤣🤣🤣
i enjoy how you explain what they're doing and why........help us understand these beautiful creatures :D
Such a good video
I think little Barney has just decided it is more dignified to walk on two legs rather than four.
Great video👍🏻
Ohhh I love seeing Satchmo playing in Disneyland! ❤️
And Timmy the waterdog - of course George is too scared 🤣
He met Mango this week!
@@mark.fergus I know, still lurking in the integration chat..🤫🤣 can't wait to see it on video !!!

I'm 100% in agreement with everything you said!
It IS odd to watch a monkey walk upright. Maybe he's more advanced😉. I hope he feels better soon.

The view is better up there.
When he first stood up, I thought he was a meerkat!
Are you sure Barney is okay? Poor Dobby getting left behind! What's going on with Gimli?
Barney is fine and already on all-fours again!
Is there a "king" for each troop?
There is an Alpha for each troop. He will be the one with the bluest testicals. and he is will strut around.
Each troop has an alpha-female and an alpha-male, but females are dominant so the alpha-female runs the troop.

George is a Lab correct?? Labs LOVE THE WATER but a little timid to go in a small puddle awww lol

Anyone know what happened to Kyle, the fellow who used to film these videos?

Was Barney a pet at one point? People teach monkeys to walk bipedal & so just wondering
Dislocated?
We initially suspected this but he uses the arm fine when climbing trees. He's now recovering well and back on all-fours 👍
