That hybrid system is idiotic.
Just another way of grabbing the $ of those foolish enough to dish it out.
When I’ve read the title of this video, my only thought was: “Finally a respectful youtuber tells everyone that making 50 videos about one vehicle restoration is lame.” I was truly expecting that statement to appear at least at some point of this video. Unfortunately, car youtubers haven’t become honest enough with their audiences yet and haven’t yet decided to tell the truth. And the truth is - making 50 videos about one single McLaren restoration is lame. I got bored on the sixth P1 episode, and I was expecting the Tavarish to accomplish the whole project in about 10-15 videos total, like he did with his blue McLaren. It was interesting to watch. I’ve watched every single episode. I don’t watch the P1 series because there’s too much water in every new video, and I don’t have that extra time for that, even considering that I could have gained some knowledge watching the P1 series. I don’t lose much, skipping Tavarish videos, just like he doesn’t lose much without me watching the P1 series. But I wish he did put as much effort into his series like he did 5 years ago.
Mate my trademark is disagreeing with everybody, so if I see a trend in a comment sections, it is usually wrong, because like you pointed out, masses are dumb on youtube, dumber.
As for Tavarsih's P1, can hardly change the oil in my car, I would not even begin to try to tell him what to do with his car.
And I agree it's disease that does more than just upset youtubers, it screws up society, otherwise all the sheeple would not be all be saying "it's a conspiracy" as soon as you point out there is a conspiracy going on.
Rich, despite his antics, is a wise and sensible person. This is a perfect arguement and Freddie is lucky to have a friend to keep him on a successful track on an expensive and risky project. Nice job, guys.
but he is not being honest in his summary. He is saying that the engine will be upgraded but then making all the references to the old hybrid system, that logic is flawed, I know myself I assumed that would also be upgraded otherwise why spend 3 episodes on it.

If anything, the fact he spent 3 episodes on it meant that he tried his best and then decided going in another direction made more sense
As a hybrid prius owner I am always hoping for someone to mod the hybrids to go faster. Like bigger battery more , voltage to motor and a ugly stupid prius thats actually undercover tesla that can go instantly very quick and beat sportscars. Just my two cents. If the battery was custom made and bigger. Ecu cracked and made to work with the rest of the drivetrain it would be some next level COOL SHIT! Rich and Freddy are just lazy to mess with the logistics of it and the computer brains because its really tough to crack stock ecus
Remember, Rich is making points for a decision he likely influenced Tavarish into making. Ask yourself this, if the P1 came from the factory without a hybrid system would it of been part of the holy trinity? Would a destroyed example sell for $600k when a brand new 765lt is $400k? Rich is clearly biased here. It is what it is, we'll all see how it plays out.
@@clips1404 except it almost is, this is highly scripted in the sense that prior to the purchase a whole roadmap on the build was laid out in order to secure a budget from sponsors. Ditching this at the 11th hour is due to contractual obligations to said sponsors that want to see the car at SEMA. If he was going to invest so much of the project on the Hybrid aspect of it, then some sort of working solution should have been budgeted to the build.
Otherwise, should have just said from day 1 that the hybrid was a no go. As watchers, and by extension, customers of his content (yes he profits off our views don't forget that) we have grounds on which to be aggrieved by this choice.

There was no point in buying the car to just take out the hole reason you bought the car. Could have done what hes doing to a 720 and saved the half mill he spent. Car is a pile of shit and he cheaped out trying to fix it. Its a dud but he cant say that cuz hes on the hook for so much.
@@scottb9868 he said he wanted to create the ultimate spiritual successor of the F1, and that only can be the P1. A 720, 765,... could never achieve this. And I think this kind of thinking, seeing it as the successor of the old legend, works even better without the Hybrid System, which is outdated anyway.

That's the point though - it made sense to do it. But I don't want to watch somebody doing things that make sense. It's a $600,000 flood-destroyed hypercar. That doesn't make sense. Why cut out a really interesting problem like the hybrid system?
If I wanted "sense" I'd have watched somebody buy a nearly new Toyota Corolla.

@@YoungShul It wouldn't cost that much at all. He's not going to get the original McLaren battery. You could get a custom better one for less than a tenth of that price now.

Freddie's P1 is his P1. I don't care what he does with it as long as he does something to it- cause that's what he said. It's not like he's asking money from his viewers. We watch for free and we can watch or not watch. Seriously, I don't get where the "hate" comes from.

When you see small channels able to make a complete crashed car rebuild fit in a 20 min video and then rich people making 20x20min videos to do a 2 hour mod... I was originally one of those disappointed. While it would be "cool" to have the battery, the performance gains are obvious and vital to Tavarish's completion of the P1. Thanks so much for the video, it absolutely helped me see exactly why he decided to ditch it!
If the electric motors drive the front wheels I'd have said restore the hybrid. In the P1 the electric motor drives the rear wheels and is used to fill in turbo lag. Modern turbos have heaps less lag so the issue is far less important. If the minimal lag still bothers then go the koenisegg route and have a compressed air system to instantly spool the turbos. So I reckon Freddy made the right decision, especially given the weight loss.
@@daniellarge9784 Yes. Whatever he lost on response, he gains back on handling. Weight is the enemy of handling, and the more weight the car loses the better it will handle. A 3000 lbs car pulling 1G lateral acceleration is making it's tires grip for 3000 lbs on the pavement. Less weight requires less from the tires.
But i'm not really sure if Tavarish will use any of that newfound grip anyway 🤷

@@chriscollins550 I have posted it three times and it’s been deleted. Tavarish tagged his new woman and the woman’s accounts have posts and pictures of Robert from aging wheels. Robert made posts indicating what happened but never said who. There are posts that outline everything with links to it but it gets deleted. Jared said he stopped working with Freddy because of his actions off camera. It’s out there.

Couldn'it say it better, Rich you said it very good and even convinced me. At first I was a pro-hybrid but after watching this I changed my mind. Thanks for being clear and helping Tavarish with this which he didnt deserve all this hate.

Alright, man, I'm back on board. Thanks for taking the time to break this all down. I suppose the thing I found irritating was that removing the hybrid drive meant that it was no longer what I felt to be a proper restoration. But in the cold light of day, the hybrid drive just kind of sucks by today's standards.
imho...the vehicle was in such a state, I never felt it could ever really be properly restored.
You make a lot of good points. I only have 1 question remaining: if you remove all of parts that differentiated the p1 from the other McLarens then what was the point of paying the massive premium for a P1 in the first place?

He paid 575k for a totalled P1. This is more than the 720s brand freaking new. If this isn’t a premium I don’t know what is. If Tarvarish started the video with Rich explaining the whole thing then there won’t be any uproar.
@@krisl3228 tbf, I think a 720 build wouldn't do nearly as well in terms of youtube views and revenue considering he just did a 675LT build which was insane in of itself.
@@krisl3228 A P1 with battery, e-clutch, electrical harness and e-motor removed and an engine with higher horsepower could be a fantastic opportunity. Imagine the debates if the hybrid system is removed and it performs much better in terms of manoeuvrability and acceleration? You normally don't get to have those kinds of debates with S-tier cars. (I say this as someone who believes in electrification of vehicles but a general interest in vehicle engineering)

I’m glad you addressed this, especially as someone who commented in favor of the hybrid system. As complex as I’m sure it is, my hope was Tavarish would modernize this hybrid system. Yes, I understand that’s most likely a huge undertaking, and it’s easy to have such desires from behind the keyboard. It did feel a little like he glossed over the topic quickly and could have helped ease the tension by addressing further. All said, I don’t own a McLaren or anything close to it, so take any of this with many grains of salt. Regardless, good on ya for standing up for your friend!

Don't hold back, Rich, tell us how you really feel! But you are totally right, ditching the hybrid system on the P1 is totally the right call. With the engine build he's doing, he'll be adding way more than 175 HP with a huge weight reduction, which will help braking and handling too.
i don't really know anything about cars, i just found this channel by mistake and thought it was really interesting, but for Tuvarish, if he "beefs" up the engine and then decided to restore the hybrid drive thing, with the engine putting out more power than what was designed couldn't that also have caused more problems in the future? like the electric motor is only putting out so much power and is only suspected to hold onto so much power when shifting, so if he did something like gave his car like 500 more horsepower then couldn't just the power alone actually make the hybrid system break or be alot worse and actually be worse for the car instead of a boost of power?
@@Arcella1981i dont think the motor would care too much since it's just adding power, as long as rpm is similiar. When shifting, power is cut to the engine anyways for a split second. Maybe if the engine revs through the rpm range really fast the motor would be less effective, not sure

@@Arcella1981 The entire hybrid system cables connectors batteries modules etc.. was really the worst affected in Tavarish flooded P1 car.. and because is way to expensive to be properly fully restored and let's say that even if he will do it it, will it be out-dated so is not worth to add it back into the car even if would have new lighter batteries the car would still be heavy that is why all the money Freddy (Tavarish) will spend will go split in 2 major directions for the P1 build :1) to a new wider-carbon body-kit (because original OE body panels that need to be replaced since were damaged in flood are also crazy expensive and factory delays to supply it would take way too longer to finish the project and 2) rest of the money for increasing the original motor performance, dyno tuning and other performance oriented parts & setups..
He is not even calling it a actual P1 anymore. He named it the P1-Evo. His car, his money, his decision.

Pissing his viewers off is not a smart move financially. Also the car loses a ton of value without the hybrid. A restored P1 might worth a million bucks, but not like this…
This is a good point. Freddy should lean heavily on this, that the project is not a restoration project. There are other P1s that can be restoration / preservation museum pieces.

@@juzolii was excited for the full restoration but that is such a dumb take, he wont make any profit selling this only counting the money hed put in it now. and hed need to put down hundreds more to get it fully dinished. and hed get better veiws actually being able to upload a build, making it not hybrid makes the build progress actually possible in a year, with a refurbished battery or custom one itd take years to fully finish the p1. fact is your in the minority, most people dont hear p1 rebuild and freak out bc theyre gonna see a hybrid system rebuilt. they want to see progress

Agree with Rich on ditching the Hybrid in the P1 - once Freddy explained his logic this to me I was sold on it - but I won't actually know until I get to drive it. Superb video Rich :)
And this is why I watch Rich...he spells out the what and why behind the decisions made with the creations he builds. Tavarish does get a little more emotionally involved with his cars, and that might lead to how he phrases his decisions. Having said that, I support his decision to remove the hybrid system and build a more potent engine in its place. Thank you Rich, and Good Luck to Freddie!
Fred ditching the hybrid system, was the best thing he did on the P1. Let's face it, trying to bring it back to stock, the P1 would end up as a luxury chicken coop in Samcrac farm near the multiple Ferrari 360s used by the cows to scratch their backs.
Why by a P1 if you are just going to turn it into a standard maclaren...

@@MT-qu4tk Rebuilding it to stock specs, wouldn't worth it. Too many exclusive parts. Add to that, it wouldn't worth the same as a mint condition one.
I think possiblely getting a really higher end up grade drive system later on would be great additional content after the build is done and some cost recouped
Rich, I was one of the first guys to comment on the tavarish build saying he should have saved $500k and just modded his 675. In truth I wanted to see him update and improve the hybrid system with todays tech not realising there are specific advantages to using the P1 chassis without adding in planned obsolescence. It’s great you could clear things up and thanks for taking the time to explain.
Then he wouldn't get the same amount of attention/views/subs, saving the P1 is a good PR for his channel

This is what’s going to happen. He will hit a technical snag. He’ll be overwhelmed and he will announce a new project. I used to love Tavarish when he took on projects he could handle in his garage in NJ. When he moved to Florida and got the Gallardo, I watched the entire series hoping to see everything fixed… when he couldn’t fix the roof, he basically gave up and started piling on different projects he never finishes… I gave up on his channel because it just wasn’t fun to see nothing completed
it’s a free 176hp and more importantly crazy amount of torque on top of whatever the peak engine hp is from his upgraded built engine. 176 additional hp, even more torque with no loss in engine efficiency, or added heat etc to the engine. On demand instant hp/tq at the cost of a measly 110lbs that actually helps to lower the cars center of gravity and 50/50 balance. The old battery was much heavier, the new McLaren battery is more than half the weight of the original, so they are heavily exaggerating the added weight as the technology has been recently upgraded and lightened significantly over the years

This is what makes a good friend, thank you for breaking it down for the masses. This makes sense me and I think it's dumb for people to unsub him for his choices for his car.
I was under the impression that he was going to add a new (modern) hybrid system as well as modifying the motor. With the exception of programming the motor or ECU to communicate with the new pieces; i really hoped he could find some company with a battery system to really make something unique. Either way I still want to see this build complete in what ever form it takes.
also he is trying to get it ready for SEMA which starts in about 2 weeks? lol I think the complexity about installing any hybrid system is going to take a long time, so maybe i the mid future he will, but for SEMA, I dont think so, maybe some of his sponsors wants the car to be there
It's not worth installing it though. Nothing about it makes the car better. The cost alone will add another 300k to it for no benefit. The car is 10x better without it.

As an actual electrical obsolescence engineer, which I am currently actually hired as, I do agree with Rich. He makes a very good point about batteries and their management systems becoming obsolete real fast. Something the EV market almost never tells you too.

The hybrid drive implemented like that is quite stupid. I believe the only real reason the car was designed that way is the novelty factor. As Rich said if it was used to make it 4x4 it would be much more important for the handling.

Heavy battery bad, bigger turbo more power, stronger rods, make car go fast. I 100% agree with getting rid of the hybrid drive. Shoot, delete it and get a minimal nitrous setup amd you have the same thing for a lot less weight
It's also future proof. A new battery would no longer be new in 10 years and would need replacing again. Hybrid and fully EV Super and Hypercars are a bad investment if one expects the cars to gain value over time. ICE cars can be kept alive almost forever. Electric cars deteriorate, no matter what.
Less weight = more speed
@@Based-Cat88True, and while Rich didn't have enough time to mention it, less weight also means better braking. Having to bring a car to a stop is a lot easier when it weighs 400 lbs less

@@frank-t6857 He did say he was going to "build it right" and, granted he never said fully he would "keep it stock" but we ASSUMED the hybrid drive would stay. I suppose it is on us, we never really expected this, because when Tavarish was at the shop in the UK, we assumed he would be using that upgraded new battery. Otherwise why make that video?
@@clonetrooper576 He was for sure investigating and entertaining the idea of keeping the battery. He took us on the ride to see what he was thinking. Then we also heard the problems with the old battery technology and the price tag of 120K $ and at least a year to deliver it. His conclusion is understandable.
I was guilty of being one of those people, but this video changed my mind and I actually agree this is the right way to go with this build now. I guess I was just blinded by thinking a P1 must be a hybrid full stop.

My consensus while watching his journey was the same as yours. When that guy said they always break I knew he had to delete it. I didn’t consider the weight etc but I’m the type that if the thing doesn’t work as it should it’s a million dollar boat anchor

This actually all makes sense. I'm glad that you came with a proper explanation about why Tavarish is ditching the hybrid system.
Not only is the system outdated and removing it will make the car significantly lighter, but also because Tavarish is adding extra power to the engine. Which would make the electric boost useless in comparison.
Well, Put it against a P1 LM in a circuit then and see who Mclaren is faster, not in the street or a drag race. Or a lap around Nurburgring to see if the car overheats and they need to stop in the middle of te lap in the "faster" car.
@@fcmancos884fun fact the P1 GTR ditched the hybrid system for more power and more lightweight. So basically tavarish is the first customer car to get a GTR Treatment.
Even funnier, the P1 GTR had an extra of 62hp from the combustion engine and 20hp from the electric motor and 110 pounds lighter. @@johncastle95

I understand what you are saying about the P1 but, two things, 1. you can put a bigger engine or more PSI in ANYTHING and make it faster, that's not the spirit of the P1 it's a hybrid car. 2. Freddie all of the sudden bailed on the hybrid system when he announced the car was going to SEMA and had a severely crunched timeline.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. It's a certificate of destruction title, so Freddy's probably going to slap on transporter tags and do
I also think there’s a difference between people complaining that he removed the hybrid system and people expressing disappointment. I think most are just disappointed because they were under the impression it was going to be restored. Either way I’m sure it’ll end up being awesome.

Listen, most of the people aren’t disappointed because we care for the power the hybrid system adds or anything, but they way he was going to deal with the hybrid system, the difficulties, the solutions and everything that comes with it made it so interesting to watch, i think going to sema was a bad decision that made him rush the build, he should just have gone with the original plan, but this is just my opinion.
I already thought that removing the hybrid system was the right move just from the cost, time, and software nightmare if he put in a different system and you brought up even more good points. Putting in a v12 Ferrari 599 motor in it with a turbo or supercharger would be sick.

I thought the same thing basically. Freddie could keep the IPAS button and use it to add more boost from the massive upgraded turbos he is installing.

The new lighter build will not only have more HP and less weight to make it faster, but it'll handle better and the braking will be better as well. Having 400lbs less weight to bring to a stop or take a corner is going to have a lot of benefits that Rich didn't even have time to mention

As a hybrid prius owner I am always hoping for someone to mod the hybrids to go faster. Like bigger battery more , voltage to motor and a ugly stupid prius thats actually undercover tesla that can go instantly very quick and beat sportscars. Just my two cents. If the battery was custom made and bigger. Ecu cracked and made to work with the rest of the drivetrain it would be some next level COOL SHIT! Rich and Freddy are just lazy to mess with the logistics of it and the computer brains because its really tough to crack stock ecus
I'm going to watch the rest of the series no matter what, so I don't care about the hybrid system. I hate it when UA-camrs complain about the comment section though. This is supposed to be a social media platform for engagement. Also, for creators, the comment section should be invaluable. Traditional digital entertainers have to deal with panels, surveys, and studies to get feedback from customers on their content. They often don't find out that they are on the wrong track until it's too late. UA-camrs get instant feedback.
There's a comment on his video that explains a lot of subscribers' complaints too that others don't articulate. People are disappointed that they don't get to see the hybrid system part that they were looking for. The part that was built up over the episodes Rich discussed.
I also agree wholeheartedly that the comment section doesn't typically post opinions based on actual knowledge or experience. But, that's just part of it. The people watching these channels will never own a McLaren, but want to see what a normal guy could do with scrapped one.
Comments are only good when its filled with yes men answers and cheers of encouragement... Everything else (valid argument or not) just gets labeled as toxic.

He could have absolutely kept the hybrid system. A lot of people are not aware but the 156,000 dollar battery that McLaren is selling is different from the original p1 battery pack. In 2020 when the McLaren speedtail came out , it featured a new and improved battery pack that weighs only 110 pounds, the original p1 battery weighs 234 pounds. McLaren offered p1 owners the chance to upgrade their batteries to the one from the speedtail with new tuning for better acceleration. Only downside is the new electric only range is less than half of the original electric range from the p1. But owners benefit from over 100 pounds weight saving and better acceleration. So if he did decide to buy a new battery pack from McLaren, he would not be getting the battery pack that you guys pulled out. He would be getting the battery pack in the McLaren speedtail. And McLaren offered p1 owners a 6 year warranty along with it.
If that happens that nice...but do u really think Maclaren will provide him the battery pack fr his salvaged P1.... Even u know how much Maclaren helped in this project..

Weight reduction, time constraints etc etc etc. Build the motor make it faster make the car lighter and build it so its done someday. Not only that but its his car, his vision for the car he can and will do what he wants
P1's hybrid system added 1 kg per hp. Which is NOT a great trade-off, let alone when all going to the rear axle like the ICE.

I wanted Tavarish to keep the hybrid drive system as it would make the videos more interesting. the challenge of improving the system (more electric power or lighter) would have been fun to see, along with a built/tuned engine. otherwise it seems to similar to the 675, just another tuned Mclaren, body kit, bigger turbo.
Having it hybrid is unique among Mclarens and what set the P1 apart. yes a P1 is old tech now, but modernising that tech would be awesome.

Agreed. I was hoping he'd collaborate with Rich on building a NEW battery pack, because the old cells are using tech that's going on 15 years old. He'd probably save money and have MORE energy density by using modern cells. I'm still gonna watch the series, but just with a little less enthusiasm.

I think the thing for most of us that understand your point and nonetheless are not onboard for the ride anymore is; We watched him rebuild and modify a fast and beautiful McLaren before. Now we were onboard for the hybrid and expensive hypercar. Like you said, if he wanted a heavily modified McLaren the 1/2 million would be best spent on a base car and a lot of newer expensive kits to put on it.

I wasn't necessarily trying to burn Freddy at the stake like some others my thing was that I thought he was gonna be like the first guy to have an updated lightweight system I actually did think he would've gone the 4 wheel drive hybrid kinda like the 918 but on steroids. You and Freddy are absolutely right on the idea of removing the hybrid drive system. It's way too much work with such little playback. And, as Freddy said, getting rid of all that weight will make it considerably faster and better handling too! The naysayers are just idiots.

This is it for me. I completely get why Freddy is ditching the hybrid system, but he's in the business of entertainment and this just doesn't make the content particularly interesting. We've seen these McLarens with built engines already, including from Freddy himself.
This now just becomes more of the same. I get that it'll be fast but in the end it's just another twin turbo V8 build with off the shelf parts connected to the same transaxle as in all the other McLaren.
Again, I get 100% why he's doing it, but it makes for boring content. I still like Freddy and his channel, but I'm just not tuning in for this build and I find it weird that I'm being attacked for that by Rich. There's tons of shows I like with seasons I don't like and skip. This is the same.

I agree with everything you've said in this video and believe Tavarish needs to do what he wants with his own damn car, and it will be better than stock, like everything he does!
exactly this. i had a friend who decades ago worked as a testing engineer at a major cellphone company. new phones actually cost less to manufacture than old phones, which sold for less, but they kept making and selling older models simply because there was a market. i always thought that the P-1 was a kind of early attempt like others (ferrari laferrari) to meet the 1:1 hypercar spec.
