    Entertaining in many ways because of the great Vivien Leigh. But I find the film's subtle racism / ideological framework a toxic bore...It is the "deployment" of Black extras as slaves and retainers as if to suggest to Modern viewers and academics that this was the Only and "eternal status" of melaninated / sub Sahara Africans even in Ancient times ! Really...? There were absolutely No Dark Skinned bodies of aristocracy or authority in ancient times. You cant take it seriously as a quasi history lesson.

    I liked her much more than Elizabeth Taylor. ET was a stunner but I found her pretty one dimensional. Not a thing wrong with that but Vivien could be childlike, vixenish, strong and I think she was great in this. Claude Rains great and he & Rex Harrison were equally magnificent I thought.

      Agree. ET was an astonishing beauty, but I think her acting when down the tubes after Burton. She started picking up his abominable vocal inflections. However, she was good in Giant and better in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The one exception, she was a delight in Taming of the Shrew.

    Beautiful 1945 Technicolour and great British cast. Setting was a bit like a stage play in terms of dialogue, but I think the relationship between the flirtatious Vivian Leigh still at the height of her beauty and the stately velvet voiced Claude Rains, they managed to make the wordiness enjoyable. Nice costumes and props but the backgrounds were like painted flats; I suppose that is to be expected with the high lighting requirements of technicolour film. Thanks for posting!

    Playing Cleopatra, Leigh's showing more "hauntedness" in her beauty and her transformation from a very young girl to an increasing sensuous (and murderous) siren. She's superb in the scene of her deceitful defense of her order to have Pothinus killed. What a performance!

      This presentation was a showcase for Caesar and Claude Rains. I sincerely doubt Cleopatra ever acted like a (forgive me) brainless bimbo. Cleopatra spoke as many as a dozen languages fluently, was schooled in math, astronomy, geography, philosophy, oratory and diplomacy. She was far from being just some sex kitten. For this reason, I prefer the Taylor portrayal of this influential queen.

    The actors (and visual richness) make this play-on-film quite enjoyable, with that easy, more contemporary (circa '45) sense of delivery and pacing, ie without the usual overinflated and often pompous style of line delivery and stance. Very amusing in Shaw's satirical musings. And one could certainly go on about Leigh's beauty and talent, as well as Rains' expected lively, nuanced performance. Good spirited cast, all around (though that may be stating the obvious.) Quirky and fun long-overlooked (I think) historical retelling.

    A superbly enjoyable film, with Leigh’s acting the equal of her beauty. One of the few films featuring Claude Rains in the title role, but his acting is exceedingly impressive. There are many other actors here, each of which bring nuggets of wonder to their role. The scene is set from the start, when Leo Genn, Stanley Holloway and Alan Wheatley exhibit high diction and authority. But there are many others, such as Michael Rennie, Stuart Granger, Francis Sullivan, Ernest Thesiger, Felix Aylmer, John Laurie, Flora Robson (superb) Kathleen Harrison and Cecil Parker. The scenes often involve hundreds of extras and are generally well constructed. The script is humorous in parts which sits well with the production. In summary, a cinematic gem and underrated film.

    I must confess I'm rather puzzled by the comments on this film! First of all, it's Bernard Shaw, he wrote SATIRICAL plays. That means that this is NOT about Ancient Egypt, or Rome. Or even necessarily Cleopatra. It had more to do with political and economic issues in England at the time of its writing. Likely to do with the British Empire and the state of the government and royalty. Shaw was, after all, a socialist.
    Second, I'm quite shocked to read what everyone's saying about the acting. These were the greatest British actors of their day! Many of them were Royal Shakespeare. Yes, the style of acting has changed, thanks to Hollywood. But frankly, I prefer this more classical style to the expletive littered, overwrought, and personality based American method of "building" a character (if you can call it that).
    Of course, there's no accounting for taste. I'm sure sooner or later Hollywood will put out another, "historically accurate" Cleopatra film, replete with an "inclusive" cast and script that, of course, reflects EXACTLY what people, motives, and ideas were like at the time of Caesar and Rome. Because Hollywood is always making art now, isn't it?

How nice to see it from beginning to end with its wonderful humor and inimitable cast: my two favorites, Leigh and Rains (and some may recognize Ernest Thesiger, or Dr. Praetorius, of "The Bride of Frankenstein"). It is puzzling when some viewers don't recognize wit and satire set against history.

    Id rather watch this any day than the Liz and Burton version ... this is at least good in acting technique/making Shakespeare enjoyable.. which is hardly done often tolerably/that's why Claude got the part HE's its ruler and no doubt Marlowespeare wouldv cast him as his major orator of the deeds controlling plot characters to get the message memorable eternal. The costumes are impeccable and with the reasonable idea of the times enough. Don't ya think though Shakespeare not being there at the time lol that this just isn't history hmmm ya so why does hollyweird even go there but of course to get you to learn and onward learn the Reality.. history being meddled with even by of course churches that who knows.. probably Patricia and Jules NEver even met let alone talked to each other candidly ... doesn't hurt anything this way or that, just so people know we might not ever really know But at least we have Good moral stories that OFTEN Do HELP the world Proceed instead of be ruined. ! . So good on this movie !! and all its efforts being Positivity! The way it went w Hollywouldn't is that you get past 1950 and you get depressed watching Everything , so seen in the skankism of Liz Taylor vx Viv here in 1945 which is by all Realistic results of actual facts found Viv's Patty is more reality than Liz's Patty.. I remember watching either version alll throughout my life, and honestly , this one was much Easier, and Liz and Dick's BORING // snorrrrre zzzzz because it was controlling and paced so they could do lines as helpless on whatev they were goofin with at the time not doing acting serious as Claude and this bunch ... so much for 50's onward celebrities zzzzzz. glaring then slapping each other or malice and blasting music while camera and splicing did what it could to get them by ! LOL! Really you[ll be happier watching the Original Hollycould script plots of pre50s films ... there[s enough FREE on here! WHICH IS ANOTHER DING ABOUT UA-cam///// WHY ARE WE NOT ALLOWED OUR EDUCATIONAL HISTORY FINDING FLINGS FOR FREE WITH THE LIKES OF 'GRAPES OF WRATH' FOR FREE BUT THEY LET US HISTORY W SHAKESPEARE W HUMORWOOD OF THIS JULIUS CEASAR ???/// WHY KEEP THE [IF IT IS ] MORE VITAL FILM FROM OUR LEARNING / OUR CIVILIZATION'S GOOD JUST SO MONEY MONGERING CAN CONTINUE WHEN THE WORLD WONT HAVE WITHOUT THOSE LESSONS AND MOTIVATIONALS TO KEEP MONEY AVAILABLE TO THIS SUCH MONGERDOM .... UA-cam YOU SHOOT YOUR WALLET WITH YOUR OWN GREEDINESS!!!!/PREVENTING ACCESS IS LIMITING INVENTORY AND LIMITS THEREFORE YOUR PATRONAGE! NO WAY DO I CARE TO GIVE MONEY TO BAD ENTERTAINMENT / CRAPPPPPP LIKE CONTEMPORARILY IS ..DISNEY YOU SUBSCRIBE THEN WANT $30 FOR A FEW HOURS for your KIDS MOVIE[1]!!!= THE ONLY FILMS DISNEY EVER MADE ANYBODY JUST HAD TO HAVE;/OWN IS THOSE PRINCESS ONES , AND DURING THE ISOLATING OR HOME LOSING THEY DO THE GREEDIEST POSSIBLE THING TO THEIR #1 PAYEES // DAMN THEM AND ALL THEIR CRAPPPPP AND ALLL THE HORRIBLE THINGS THEY'VE SPREAD THROUGHOUT... It was just a desecrating Shaw's play that minimizes the role of Cleopatra riduced to a childish girl and Caesar to undignified person. Vivien Leigh very insignificant, little voice, little spirited, only pretty, far for being the great beauty she was elsewhere.

    Had to see this when I noted who was in the cast - terrific character actors & Leigh couldn't look lovelier. Especially enjoyed watching actors well known from other films like Thesiger, Rennie, Sullivan, Genn, Robson. The boy who played Ptolemy went on to direct "The Lion in Winter" (Anthony Harvey). My fave thing is Claude Rains in his wedgies to make him a bit taller. Thanks for the memories.

    The opening speech if Cesaer to the Sphinx in the desert night was brilliant in explaining the Roman and Egyptian philosophies if the times then, as well as futuristic in explaining what we have since uncovered about the building of those civilizations and the various theories that did not exist at the time this version of the movie was made in 1947!! It was totally awesome!!! I never noticed it before, but, as I am much older and have been exposed to the newer theories on the ancient wonders like the Sphinx n the Nile River and the question of their inceptions!!! Applause to Claude Rains!!!

    I like these old epics. Leigh and Rains were both good actors. But I forgot this one was made in 1945. I was done as soon as she started beating the black slave, who was portrayed as ignorant and cowardly. Some things, like this movie, are better left in the past.

    • @suziecreamcheese211
      @suziecreamcheese211 2 роки тому +3

      I agree but black people getting roles at all was rare especially in a major film. I think he was there for comic relief and did his job well. But the whipping scene was cringe worthy.

    • @charlesm7589
      @charlesm7589 2 роки тому +2

      @@suziecreamcheese211 True, Blacks getting any role was rare back then. As far as comedic relief, what's funny to one man is another man's centuries-long insult.
      Consider how the Hebrew slaves played by white actors in The Ten Commandments were largely portrayed as noble or heroic. At the very least, they were acknowledged as victims. Besides, did the slave in this picture have to be black? Or was rhat just what felt comfortable to the white American public at the time?
      Still, there has been great progress since this movie was made. From being a cowardly, adle-brained slave back then to being the Superhero King of Wakanda! :)

      More of a comedic farce than any kind of historical treatment. I found Leigh's Cleopatra childish and silly, bearing little to no resemblance to the historical accounts of the Queen. As the victors, the Romans talked quite a bit of smack about Her Maj that has survived to this day: she was in reality quite a woman, a capable and shrewd ruler, literate, multi-lingual, and reputedly the first in the Ptolemaic line in many generations who even bothered to learn the Egyptian language! The costumes and sets are nice, though, and I very much like that the odd person may become irreversibly bitten by the history bug.
