Well done bro - loving your videos. I was like you 25 years ago racing Forster Tuncurry, Frankston, Canberra- all the old long course races as a solid age grouper. I feel your passion and I love that you’re embracing the journey and you’ll look back on these years with great memories. I’m trying to recreate some of them now that I’m 53 - you’re never too old for triathlons, and you’re giving me great inspiration so thanks bro 👍
Stumbled upon this from Steve mckennas race recap - got 70.3 Western Sydney next week Very interesting dynamic here, I think Ironman have to reconsider whether it’s worth enforcing drafting rules for non pro races when they book out 2k+ tickets. Ridiculous. Great video
Maybe you were pushing the bunch from behind with those fast 60mm Hustler Series wheels. You’ll be happy to know that they do go that fast without a bunch. Glad you enjoyed our wheels.
I also competed in the sunshine coast 70.3 on the weekend, I tried my best not to draft. After seeing everyone and their mum drafting I gave up and joined in around the 60km mark. Never copped a warning or a penalty. I think all the crashes didn't help either, all the officials and volunteers focused on that. Great time btw
I was probably in packs for 60 of the 90 km and never received any kind of warning from an official. The entire race I saw packs and only saw 2 people penalised out of probably 2,000
The drafting ruined the day. SO funny that none of that huge peloton got penalised but I saw lots of newbies getting put in the penalty bin for being in a group of 2 or 3. Mental!
Mate, as always, love the real commentary - its a bummer that the design of the race basically forces you to draft. At this point i think they should either just halve the participants or make it draft legal because it just ruins the race for people who are too scared/too slow to draft. Regardless, amazing times even with a drafted bike!
Unfortunately, the most realistic way of decreasing drafting is increasing cost to get tech gadgets, larger courses, paid officials, larger window for wave starts, etc.
You did a could job and couldn’t avoid drafting. For me a shock that it happens during these races. I aim for the podium in my agegroup and start in front with swimming
I did a 4.24 in the same race, aside from the swim pretty much the exact same splits. Not sure i would do this race again because of the drafting and there were certainly parts of the course where those packs could have been avoided, so for heaps of these people it was just blatant cheating. Not sure if you mentioned the fact the bike course was also 2-4km short as well. I was in the same pack as the guy you show at the start of the video in the white and red kask helmet walking into transition before the race. He was one of the main figures in one of the big packs i ended up having to sit in. 200 watts and 40km and hour is a joke and ruined it for me and then I saw this dude walking the run. Seems like everyone wants the strava clout and 16 thousand dollar bikes but doesn't want to do any of the hard work imo. I may as well have done the run fresh to be honest.
Yeah definitely on the second lap you could of dropped out of the pack and ridden your own race, although if you do that than you spend the rest of the bike leg constantly getting passed by pelotons . And yeah the bike course was easily 5km short, I do talk about how I thought I’d missed part of the course when I went into T2. I think most people would of preferred an honest race but ended up almost forced to ride in packs.
Also the dude in the helmet is a mate of mine and he said he was pushing as hard as he could on the bike to catch up to the bigger packs and that totally blew apart his run legs.
The race officials have been lacking in my last few races too. To penalize one bike racer and move on is totally unacceptable and unfair. All they have to do is point to a rider, wave a blue card and write down a race number. How hard is that. One could point out 20 cheaters easily.

Good stuff brotha, sub 1:30:00 off the bike is no joke
sub 2:30 is pretty impressive too :)
Good luck with the next one buddy!

Great video
Great video and commentary 👍
Followed on strava!
Great race. I’m aiming for a similar run split my next half. Your training is inspiring💪🏼
Thanks mate, best of luck !
Let me know how you go after the race
The course needs to go back the the world champs course. Head to the hills. That worked

Absolutely loved the wheels. Can’t wait to put them to good use on a course without bunches.
Carbon mafia = free speed

Yeah disappointing hey !
Sounds kinda fun tbh
Was watching you on the tracker thinking holy shit he's killing that bike leg. After you quoting you'd be aiming for 32-33kmh
Haha yeah, the goal now is to try and ride that fast without being in a group
Congrats on the race and hat off for the honest review. Pelotons are unfortunately a thing in 70.3s…
Thanks mate

Thanks mate, honestly I don’t know what the solution is aye. Tough one

Are you going to do the India Goa Ironman 70.3?
Running off a hard bike wouldnt be the same either, cos you didnt have to hold the power for as long as you wouldve.
You did a could job and couldn’t avoid drafting. For me a shock that it happens during these races. I aim for the podium in my agegroup and start in front with swimming
"Ironman Triathlete Describes his First Group Ride Ever"
😂😂😂 literally
A very honest recap mate, thank you. Curiously what was your average and normalised power for the bike leg?
Sorry forgot to put this in the video, average was 215W and normalised was 221W
All my training and racing is always on Strava

Busso at the end of the year????
Would love to but it’d be too expensive I think
@@lachlanearnshaw no worries. I will be there. Super flat, great if you’re wanting a PB or sneaky chance of qualifying for Kona.

It is unsafe to use tt bike in ironman races anymore
No one’s times were accurate due to the bike leg being 5km shorter
Not everyone was riding in packs. The slower your swim time the less people around you so you could actually ride without drafting.
Yeah the slower swimmers really were out at a huge disadvantage
They need to stop over selling these races with chasing 💸
Yeah, I mean the problem is though that then less people get a chance to race
