    This is actually basically how rockets work. Think about it, you are shooting stuff backwards to make yourself go forwards. Using decouplers is just like using a really really inefficient engine.

    I remember when the 3.73m decoupler was massless for some reason. You could use them to go literally anywhere just by stacking them infinitely.

      For some reason, people didn't want to blow up a bunch of nukes over their own country.
      But normal rockets are still technically explosions, just one long one instead of a bunch of tiny ones.

      It’s called the Orion Drive, and it was tested on a small scale model and worked. Also Kerbal Space Program 2 will be adding this engine to.

    4:32 somebody actually had this as a theory for getting a spaceship to a decent percentage of the speed of light, they used nukes instead of decouplers but it saves on fuel 🤣

    my theory as to why on the second try the kraken was summoned.
    Jeb was in a seat, and when the machine hit the ground, only the seat broke.
    due to this, Jeb was fine, but he was also in the ground, because the first collision frame only the seat was broken, and the collision was pointed almost perfectly towards the ground.
    therefore, Jeb was spat out of kerbin at an incredible speed, causing Floating point overflows, and the kraken to materialize.

    It just clicked for me 🤣 I was really impressed by whoever came up with the concept behind the Orion project, then Dennis casually came up with it himself... makes the idea a little underwhelming when it’s accidentally stumbled upon in a space-based videogame... it does make me want to build a proper spaceship around that propulsion concept though

    This concept is much like what (I believe) NASA was testing many years back, they use explosions as their propulsion; basically throwing hand grenades off the bottom of the rocket to get it to fly off the launch pad.

    This with some added shielding and shock absorbsion and using small attomic bombs instead of decoupler charges has actually been proposed as a viable means of space travel. Also that was epic.
