You are certainly an inspiration, Dave. Thanks for all the work you do in the model rail scene. Always a pleasure to watch you at work. All the best....Tom
This was a great introductory video as l am just starting my first small railroad setup. I am quite an artistic person which gives me more than enough hope with your instructions that l can build something that will turn out great. I am working with a small area at the moment 3' x 5' but like the idea of a module for which can be added onto with other modules in the future when space allows.
The structures on this module are mostly kit built. Someone asked where to get them. I'd start with Wm. K. Walthers in Milwaukee, WI. They have a catalog showing all types of structures. The track was laid on double-sided carpet tape.
The latest container of Mod Podge that I bought this summer is full of micro bubbles, and that's before I spread it on a waterway. The people who make it (American Art Clay?) may have changed production methods and whipped the product to get more volume. I don't know. I do know that it's different than the old stuff - I compared the new Mod Podge with some dregs from a bottle almost 15 years old and there is a difference. Maybe they're adding more volume by adding air. As I said, I don't know. What I've done is to put it on in thinner layers using a mop brush so there's almost NO brushing. Just plop it on and leave it be. Not the same as the old stuff but passable.
Thank you for this video. You mention being careful not to create any bubbles. I have a million little ones and when I try to get rid of those, more are created. What can I do?
Question: At 34.00 Dave is working on the small business right next to the water. How would I scenic this area if the business is up on stilts, poles, etc.?
One negative I learned about Sculptamold ..... I used it extensively on my HO modules for the club of which I was a member. Then, due to some work related moved, the modules got stored for several years. Seems that the storage unit wasn't completely pest-tight ..... the roaches/water bugs found the material somewhat appetizing ..... repairs were in order upon retrieval
A *general* question to the OP as well as you all: Is the Foam/Sculpt-a-mold way easier to learn than the paper/cardboard/plaster method?! I'm NEW and I've tried a few plaster ones and I'm getting frustrated. Is this entire foam covered with the sculpt-a-mold?! I'm thinking I would be better off with the foam base as I think my brain can grasp carving out scenery vs building up scenery -- if that makes sense. Thanks in advance!
Hi Dave, Can you tell me the product number of the styrofoam rocks use use by Scenic Express? I can't find a similar product when I look. I'm interested in trying those! Thanks!
The rocks are on pages 166-167 of the Scenic Express catalog #17. Call 1-800-234-9995 for a catalog. I don't remember the exact ones I used because I cut-up the castings to make smaller pieces.
I've never bought it mail order. I get it from a wholesale sign supplier. That being said I use uline and blick for other purchases and both are dependable.
@@thetracksidemodeler8573 I could not find gator board within 80 miles. So I ordered it from uline. I plan on building a studio backdrop with some of it for my coffee business, but am using the rest for my shelf rr.
Actually just a small drop of dish soap into the water solution is sufficient rather than 2 teaspoons worth. One can also do a 1 to 3 ratio of glue to water and add a drop of dish soap in there as well and makes a great sealer.
Great module, thanks for sharing your abilities and techniques ! And speaking of abilities, I think Bob Ross would’ve been proud of that background!

I want to use 1/8” rubber mat as a rail bed. It is ok?

Dave, if one is mail ordering gator board, there is Dick Blicks, and a company called Uline.
I've never bought it mail order. I get it from a wholesale sign supplier. That being said I use uline and blick for other purchases and both are dependable.

Which is the formula for wet water? A pint of fresh water and a couple of (little?) spoons of dishwasher agent?
Nice!!
I missed the part where you added texture to the roads.
