- FAQ: Where do sea glass marbles come from and what is a Codd marble?
ANSWER: A lot of the sea glass marbles we find here along the Scottish coast are Codd marbles. Codd marbles come in lots of colours but the one we find most often is sea foam, followed by white and much rarer Pirate marbles. Codd marbles were once used as stoppers inside thick glass bottles, invented by Hiram Codd and patented in 1872! Kids loved to smash the bottles to get to the free toys ( marbles ) - we find half broken Codd bottles at bottle dumps quite often, and every single one we have found had the marble pinched... except for one, but that was the top of the bottle !! Codd bottles were made for around 50 years, so each one of these marbles has been in the Sea for around a century!

Codd marbles are our favourite beach and bottle dump finds and make amazing jewellery. Anything from a pendant to a pair of earrings looks stunning with these rare treasures from the beach!

Ramune bottles are used today in Japan- these marbles come from 1890s Codd bottles …
I used to go to the beach when I was younger all the time. And I would find these a lot of the time. These marbles bring back some good memories. I have to go find the ones that I've collected, I know they must be in one of my boxes.

I can't go to the beach 😭. But when I go to stores I always get some and sometimes I ask my grandma for some but if you buy some always identify if they are real.

Marbles weren't used as ballast - that's a myth I'm afraid :)

Why marble in the glass bottles? I am wonder where it came from and what make people decided put marble in the glass bottles?
The marble helped with keeping the carbon in the drink - it acted as a stopper ! Check out Hiram Codd on Wikipedia for more detail :)
