- For the 50th reaction video of season 2 of this series, classical music majors react to Jimin's 'Lie' lyric video.
SO SORRY FOR THE BAD QUALITY! I had to make some changes after deleting the original project so I had to download from my original YT upload, which lowered the quality :')
Thanks to Twitter ARMY's and RM's VAPP video (www.vlive.tv/vi...) reflecting back on the WINGS album, I was able to write up and read short intros to each solo song before the reactors watched the videos. For our solo song marathon, I encouraged the reactors to pay 50% attention to the music and 50% to lyrics...except for Suga's solo where I asked them to pay most attention to his lyrics.

Hi, super late to the party. But I feel like "caught in a lie" is in major because major is usually associated with happiness, and the lie is him pretending to be happy with himself.

Also the whole piece is in minor and you subconciously expect a minor in the chorus but then the major comes so it kinda doesnt fit but it's definately on purpose because it's pretending to be happy.

Yes, totally agree. The harmony is somewhat classical and a bit Beethoven-like i would say, it's really dark and intense and the major in the chorus gives a different context.

I love listening to people who actually technically understand music and composition comment on songs, it's so fascinating and gives a whole new perspective. It's so easy to just listen and not think about the effort, creativity or thoughtful planning that went into creating the piece and leading you on an emotional journey - this really brings you back into each sound, voice or movement and makes you appreciate the music on a different level.

lie is a confusingly interesting song. i mean, the first time i heard it, i was hooked as soon as they smacked me in the face with that major. I'm not quite fond of the way jimin handles his voice, but am really fond of his tone all the same

kissmeon theribs musically speaking there are majors and minors it is something quite hard to explain if you had no previous musical training. It is when the music have a specific sharp or flat.

I don't know, saying he should see this puts the need of reevaluation on him when it's at least just as much on the fans. Granted, the idol/fan relationship unhealthiness goes both ways, but in this case, it's also a product of expectations. "They're so amazing they can sing and dance at the same times and kill these high notes and perform for hours etc", no, they're not >that< good, and all these unrealistic expectations of irrational fans seeing perfect beings is part of what creates this unexetricable pressure which then can contribute to the kind of "impostor syndrome" Jimin seems to feel and the song can be interpreted being about.

Pomme Frite I don't think I had that thought of 'he must know he's perfect' in mind, I just thought it'd be good for him to see a more constructive compliment so that he knows his song is musically complex n good in that way. I kinda see what you mean though.
For me I believe that Jimin still has a lot of room to improve, like you said, he's not an absolute perfect performer, but I think he shouldn't stress himself so much, or at least don't just put his self-worth into his performance, which is a difficult thing to not do, cuz as a performer there's that responsibility to do well. I thought this evaluation of his song would be an encouragement to him cuz it has more substance that the standard 'omg he's perfect' comments.
You could also say that the switch to major represents the realization that he has been lying to himself. It's like a sudden moment of clarity, followed by the dark realization that he doesn't know how to escape, despite recognizing the issue.

Jimin MUST see this! His voice is so beautiful but he is such a perfectionist he is never satisfied with his work, this would give him the confirm f his talent and would probably help him becoming less critical of himself. Lie is truly a masterpiece from the touching lyrics to the clever composition and the choreography as well perfectly suits Jimin’s extraordinary talent of delivering emotions with his dance.

I know that you guys a classical musician and you don't really visualise the music in your mind the way a dancer might do, but please take a note that jimin is a dancer through and through so his approach in writing music/lyrics is different as he wanted to emphasize the way he move along the beats too..
It is actually amazing how difference a music can be with a choreography in mind..
Fiona has described that this beat makes you feel like being pulled in and Payton gestures raising his hand during 'Caught in a Lie' line and it was exactly how Jimin danced this song..
and I am sure none of you had actually seen him performed this live..

thank u for describing this. i tend to forget that BTS always take into account coreography when writing and areanging music and damn this is beautiful, i'm not a dancer so i'm not aware of these stuffs but man why am i suddenly tearing up. usually i just watch jimin's live performance for his techniques, now that u mentioned about layers and emotions, my respect grows ten-fold for jimin, bts and the people working behind. what an amazing team.

i honestly can't believe that lie is a real song like it's such a masterpiece that i can't even put it into words. i'm not exaggerating this in any way; i've listened to it on repeat for more than a week with it being the only song i listened to (and i literally mean only) and i still haven't gotten tired of it at all. it's so mind bogglingly perfect and amazing and i'm honestly struggling to type this because i know that no matter what i say, my love for this song cannot be properly expressed. every time i listened to lie, it feels like falling in love over and over. i don't know exactly what it is but something about it is so extremely perfect in every way.
It is really a masterpiece unlike anything else. And the lyrics? So simple, effective and meaningful. Nothing is unnecessary. Jimin really has a way with lyrics that way. If he wasn't so hard on himself and his work and learned to just not give a f about the result every time, I think he would've written and released plenty of songs by now.

This is literally the song that got me into Kpop. This is the song that made me realize that not everyone who speaks Korean is a bubbly, brightly colored, high ptiched person singing about partying and love. YES YES YES IM SO GLAD EVERYONE LOVED LIE!!!! LIE is such a great song, it’s the most popular song of all the solo songs of the WINGS album, and for good reasons. The way the song is just so mystical and so quirky, and the lyrics are so superb. Jimin’s voice has grown SO MUCH over the years, and I’m just so happy that he got to showcase his lower range in this song. The verses are just AMAZING. WINGS was literally THAT album. All the solo songs are SOOOOO good!

The thing i love most about this song is that it's hauntingly beautiful, but also sad, and even a little seductive. it's got so many moods to it, and it has a really good meaning behind the lyrics too.
The instrumentals in BTS are amazing (especially in Lie, and basically mostly Jimin solos). The instrumentals in lie goes from a mysterious tango, to soft but insane wen it hits the chorus, and it really brings out the insanity of ones self doubt. I’m looking way too deep into this. Plus, THE SYMBOLISMS IN BTS MVs. Oh my gosh. Btw, yes, i do appreciate all of BTS songs whether it’s songs that have multiple theories that’ll destroy my brain, songs addressing really dark topics, or something just for fun and that’s wat I appreciate in their songs. They don’t have to stick to one genre.
