I’d rather vote for a boiled potato over Trump, but the Democrats need to stop giving us “better than Trump” candidates and start giving us someone who will stop this handmaids tale hellscape we are living in. We need a true leader who will unite the country, the 99%, not just the Democrats.
Someone who can 'unite the country' is a pipe dream right now. Biden is the most centrist candidate imaginable, and the firebreathing MAGAs think he's a socialist. The person I think would do the best is Josh Shapiro with someone with foreign policy chops.

Really, really respect y’all for not just towing the line. As an Ohio dem who’s been trying to register voters (thanks to stuff I learned on this channel and your book, btw) I think the party is very, very out of touch with average voters and the general vibe of the country. With a younger leader who represents the future and Sherrod Brown on the ticket, we can make Ohio purple again. We’ve been kicking ass with special election turnout. But Biden represents everything that many people hate about politics: he is an old man who is too proud to step aside and make way for a new generation. This is something I hear from old folks, too! Not just campus kids. Is it possible to win with Biden? I think so. I think maybe. But with basically any other democrat we could make it a historic shellacking. People are so, so ready to move on from Trump. The fact of a Biden/Trump rematch is THE thing that is making folks want to stay home. The idea that we have these two candidates again has made so many people feel that nothing has changed in the past 4 years. And idk if you’ve noticed this, but voters do not make decisions based on cold calculated logic.

I don't care about polls but which Democrat polls higher against trump right now than Biden? Biden is probably the only real choice we have right now. Maybe the best thing Biden could do is to say after reelection, he'll resign in January and let Kamala take over.
This reminds me of the time I had to convince by 75 year old father to stop driving because he was becoming erratic and forgetful and terrifying to drive with. He never had an accident but he would stop for no reason in the middle of traffic. My mother voluntarily stopped driving at 80 because she just didn’t feel safe anymore. She said that there was too much to keep track of when driving. It’s time for Biden to give up the keys to the car. The stakes are so much higher here. Please fix it because I’m a Canadian and can only watch this potential disaster unfold.
"I don't need to stop driving, people will go out of their way to avoid hitting me even if I do stop randomly in traffic" is a pretty apt simile to "people will vote for me because the alternative is worse, even if I am showing some signs of decline" yea, it's true, but not *everyone* is actively looking for someone stopped in the middle of the road, and not everyone is gonna go out and vote just because they're paying attention to how bad trump is. We need someone who can deliver that message to those people who *arent* paying attention or who *arent* already convinced, and Biden just isn't doing it.
THANK YOU FOR NOT GASLIGHTING US. Biden has serious issues he needs to deal with, or leave. I have gained so much respect for this show, holy shit. God job yall. Real video here.
When Stephanopoulos asked Biden how he would react if he lost to Trump and all the evils he (Biden) dreaded came to pass, Biden said, in essence, that as long as I did my very best, tried my hardest... Biden's answer focuses upon himself and whether he did his very best to win, and not upon the terribly catastrophic, truly devastating impact of a second Trump presidency upon the entire free world. Biden entirely missed a very important opportunity to drive home the true existential threat of Trump and MAGA.
I turned on the abc interview, saw how old biden sounded and had to turn it off. Just remembered how much Obama looked aged after his first term; I think it's legit to also come to terms that Biden has aged harder than expected. It doesn't help that Biden first ran as a one term president initially. I will always vote for him if he 's on the ballot, but its hard to seriously look at him when it feels like I'm voting for the party and not the person.

I don't remember Biden ever indicating that he intended to run once only, but I hear people saying this all the time. any idea where you got this impression?
@@MrSnailwoodI don’t think he explicitly said he would only run for one term, but did say that he wanted to be a “bridge” for future leaders. People interpreted it how they wanted to
@@MrSnailwood it was widely reported in 2019 that he explicitly told his aides that he would not run for re-election in 2024. He tempered that reporting with the “being a bridge” comments. He later back pedaled by refusing to commit to not running when asked publicly. That makes sense from a strategic standpoint but doesn’t denounce his previous comments.
Thank you for being real about this issue and not gaslighting people about the problem we face. I fear Trump will win because of how not excited people are about Biden.
What are you talking about Biden is gaslighting us. He is saying that he's mentally fit when we all saw that he isn't That's the definition of gaslighting.
We are basically being told by the campaign that we need to deny reality. If the goal is to deny Trump the presidency, Biden should obviously drop out - that is the reality.
No if Biden leaves Trump wins. Republicans have said that they will challenge any ballot changes in court. Who do you think SCOTUS will rule in favour of?
And who should be president instead that will get enough people to know who they are and have enough campaign money and get enough votes to win when it's FOUR AND A HALF months until the election?
@@PimpessRockstar The French and the British do it all the time. Harris has more than enough name recognition. My response to you is: what, like it's hard?
It's not Biden’s mental fitness that concerns me. It’s that he has never led Trump in the polls and I fear Trump will win. Even if Biden were to be Week-end at Bernie's level he would be a better president than Trump bc Biden would surround himself with smart, decent democrats and the country will survive.
People that surround him weren't elected. Biden is in charge of the most lethal military and nuclear arsenal in the world. no one else has this authority. The man in this position HAS TO BE able to think clearly and rationally.
@@diannef315 It's unfortunate that polls are so unhelpful these days. They were never great at predictions, but they used to be off the way weather reports are off. Now they're systematically over counting R votes. I've heard that it might be because they all use census data and the 2020 census was inaccurate. Check out Allan Lichtman. He has a statistically valid prediction model. And for productive ways to help, look up Hopium Chronicles by Simon Rosenberg.
I am not American so I can't vote over there but the whole world is going to be affecte by this election: quite honestly if Democrats go on to field a candidate that is clearly not fit to drive a car let alone steer a superpower like the US for the next 4 years they deserve the punishment that is Donald Trump (the most morally and personally unfit candidate of the modern age).
Will we ever have a democrat candidate as unifying and common sensical as those two campaigns? 07-08 campaign especially? Republicans are setting up Tulsi to do that in 2028 I guarantee it.
I just heard most of this on Spotify but want to see your faces. I understand that Biden can't drop out until after the NATO summit. I am looking forward to the day after. I also read someone bringing up Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She was fabulous, and yet, years later, I still have a sour taste in my mouth about how her death helped to bring about the current Supreme Court situation.
Now imagine if Biden stays in the race and actually wins the election to only then die (I wish him well) a few weeks after the election, with Republicans holding to the house, does anyone really think the GOP will certify that election with Harris as President elect? They will pull some scheme and steal the election in the same way they stole a Supreme Court Justice appointment and the Presidential election of 2000.
On a human level, in the 90s I lived thru my dad's Alzheimer's. It was heartbreaking, gut wrenching...and progressive. Dementia comes in stages..and when watching the debate, the facial expressions, the responses, everything Biden said/did was a duplication of my dad's early-mid stage dementia. So on a human level, my heart goes out to him, his family. However...teh stakes are far FAR too great to be concerned about how Biden leaving the ticket would hurt him..ALL the GOP has to do is show actual clips from the debate, and they will win the election. He will lose, and lose to a dangerous, unwell man. If the Ds choose to continue to drive the 'car' off the cliff, history will not be kind. Bigly.
Joe Biden does not have Alzheimer’s! He has normal aging. He’s more frail, talks slower & softer. Trump has obvious symptoms of worsening Alzheimer’s. Have you noticed how he garbles up words & doesn’t know what he’s saying; his head drops down & to his left. Or how about accusing Nikki Haley of not taking the additional troops needed on Jan 6th? Talking about Obama as if he’s still president. The incidents are endless.
I'm 75. At every annual checkup, I have to do that silly cognitive test. I've actually failed the "remember 5 things" bit, but last year I didn't because I was determined that Trump wouldn't beat me.
That's not really fair. He knew in the moment he blew it, I'm sure he knew why (and has probably been told by a hundred people all the ways he screwed up), so there was really no reason to watch it.
@@RandomFandomDragon The problem is that he probably HASN'T been told by a hundred people all the ways he screwed up. He's close aides are NOT telling him, he is losing in the polls, then they're NOT telling him he did an horrendous debate, followed by a weak interview after about a week. It's the exact same problem Trump has, too many sycophants.
@@RandomFandomDragon Respectfully disagree. I think it would have been helpful for him to watch it the way the audience saw it, especially his posture and facial reactions when he wasn't talking but was shown on the split screen.
@@HarryF-tz5fo Nah mate, as someone who spends an embarrassing amount of time following American politics, the disparity from 2020 is stark. I can provide a link if you're interested.
I've been annoyed a few times regarding the media's coverage of Biden's issues, but I'll admit it's out of fear, mostly. I feel like Trump's lies deserved a bigger spotlight immediately after the debate, but everyone decided that was unimportant in comparison to Biden's age.
with all due respect some americans do not have the intellectual capability of a grade 9 student. biden i think is no question an older man who does not have the physical stamina he had maybe 6 months ago but his intellectual prowess is not significantly diminished- cpmpared to trump who by apoearances physically looks the same as 4 years ago but his mental and intellectual acuityhas in fact diminished. if buden runs i believ he wil win
It’s the medias job to report the news… not cover for the Democratic Party. Trump hasn’t done anything newsworthy while Biden’s health is the biggest story, maybe in the whole world.
I'm not happy with the conversations. They are using the narrow view of people steeped in politics. The polls barely shifted - less than the margin of error. Pundits have been slamming him for almost two weeks and he lost 2 points. He's fine.
I really hate the Biden camp’s argument that he’s the only one who has already beaten Trump. Yes. Barely. He never stood out. But because as each potential nominee dropped out Biden took a certain amount of what was left. He just ended up last out. Can you imagine how different the world would be with Warren or Buttigieg in 2020? Would they have beaten Trump? I think so. In fact I think they would have done much better. And we wouldn’t be having this conversation now. If nothing else the fact that Trump is a literal felon and rapist who led a failed coup, and the candidate is neck and neck. That’s a failure.
I voted for Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 primary. I saw her in an interview today & it reminded me how much I admire her. Mayor Pete would be a great president.
I’m a hard left voter, I’m not going anywhere, whatever candidate is on the ticket that’s my candidate. The independents that are actually undecided, they have been subjected to the sleepy joe narrative and they believe it (true or not). It may not be fair to president Biden, but we have a secure base, it’s worth exploring someone who appeals to the undecided.
It's also going to be an issue that leading Democrats have been pounding the message that Trump's a threat to democracy, yet seem remarkably complacent with Biden despite his continued low polling. So it looks like they're resolved to Biden losing in November. My point is that it's going to be more difficult to get people to vote for Biden if they're not convinced (based on the behavior of leading Dem politicians) that Trump's not really an existential threat.
@MartyAckerman310 Well then, instead of detaching yourself from the result, get involved. Trump lied once every 3 minutes in that debate. Trump is also old. Trump is a pervert and he's demented. Trump has been slurring his words since 2016. Who is calling for him to step down?

Also, Joe was asked a while ago at a press conference, 'who else could beat Trump', and he said 'i can think of 50 other Democrats'. So what he's said is in conflict with itself.

Plus, every time there's been an open seat for the presidency and the party in power does not have a clear consensus nominee or heir apparent, the party holding the White House has always lost. Look at what happened in 1952 when the Dems lost to GOP presidential nominee Eisenhower after Truman stepped aside. Look at what happened in 1968 when the Dems lost to Nixon after LBJ decide to not run for another term and the Democratic party had a bloody miserable divisive chaotic primary with a horrible racist Southern Democrat who further spoiled the election for the Democratic party by running as a major third party presidential candidate.
I *keep saying* that, as a Democrat, I got steamrolled. I’ve been PO’d since we didn’t have a primary debate, before all the recent concerns about Biden’s age came about. The other possible candidacies got strangled in their infancy. I think Biden saying he was elected unopposed is a *really* bad look.
The Dem primaries weren't strangled. People were unimpressive in interviews. I remember Dean Phillips on Pod Save America - he had no platform other than Biden's approval ratings. There were events with no attendance. That's a very ordinary failed campaign.
Most of the other people running were nutjobs or antivaxers or both. I don’t think that these are the best Americans can do. We need good qualified candidates and Biden just happened to be the better choice out of most of them. I wish Bernie would have been the front runner but that just isn’t the reality we live in.

I loved every thoughtful response he gave to Lovett's multitude of probing questions. I'd happily vote for Ro Khanna for President in future! He is inspiring...
DNC made it publicly clear that they stood behind Biden and wanted a coronation. They sanctioned zero debates. Less than half the number of Democrats voted this cycle than they did in 2020 primaries.
Although I'm beginning to see the concerns about Biden more clearly every day, I still would like someone who is undecided who can explain what would allow them to vote for Trump no matter what condition Biden is in to serve. If Biden was in a coma, I'd vote for him over Trump a gazillion times. Because in the worst case scenario -- that Biden would become incapacitated after winning and Harris would step up -- the result is better than if Trump won.

So US democracy will fall due to one man's hubris and one party's stubbornness... 🤦🏻♀️ It doesn't matter if Biden believes in himself, especially when a lot of us who are his supporters have doubts. I can't imagine how the middle and undecided voters are going to think/vote. Not only has his message not been clear, he's not a good communicator AND he still mumbles making it hard to decipher what he is saying. My mother was literally struggling to understand him and then got frustrated and turned off the stream. She's going to vote blue regardless but she isn't the voters he needs to convince and if he can't even convince voters that are on his side, then how is he going to convince others? Perhaps we will just have to resign ourselves to our fate of having an orange tyrant as our dictator going forward. Please can someone explain to me why do establishment Democrats have their head so up their asses?? As much as I respect Biden in the past, literally anybody would be better than Biden right now. Why can't the Dem party/campaign think strategically instead of catering to one man's personal pride?? The denial and rationalization of some Dems is wild to me. It's like 2016 again when some of us saw Trump coming a mile away and many Dems didn't realize or want to acknowledge the orange buffoon's threat.
I don't think it is all a forgone conclusion that literally anyone would be better. They might do a better campaign, but we are so close to the election now and we have enough experience with contested conventions and changing candidates in mid-stream - no one has ever won that way. And the other possible candidates don't have the incumbency or widespread name recognition, which shows in the polling that's being done. It's a huge unknown to change to another candidate now. No one can say whether it would make things better or worse.
Thank Pod Save America for not shrinking from this very difficult, divisive and immensely important issue-- arguably the most important issue of our age.

Thank you for communicating this so clearly and for voicing the understandable concerns about Biden. Really enjoyed that pod and that you haven’t sugarcoated anything.
I think this age conversation has gotten enough airtime and its time to move on as a party. We are in the last stages of the election and every minute wasted on arguing about Biden's fitness for office is another minute that could have gone to talking about Biden's record and Trump's terrible record and lack of fitness for office. Biden, whether decrepit or not, has demonstrated he has put together a very capable administration full of intelligent public servants. His administration has already bolstered consumer protections, beefed up labor standards, improved the student loan system, strengthened our commitment to clean energy, and more. The fact of the matter is, even conceding that Biden is too old and needs to need step down, doing so this late in the process would be incredibly messy. Who would replace him? Kamala Harris? There are some serious electability concerns there and if not Harris, there would be massive concerns from black voters of the optics of passing over a qualified black woman to hand the nomination to... who? Gavin Newsom? Gretchen Whitmer? That would lead to weeks more political infighting and more distractions from the news story that matters most: Trump is a deranged criminal hellbent on disolving our democratic institutions and he must be stopped. No matter what happens regarding the Democratic nomination, I will be voting blue no matter who, but I cant help but fear this news story is a major distraction and takes attention away from the issues that matter most.
Yes this. Also Biden has a heart. Trump doesn’t and he will just get worse if he has dementia. If Kamala has to step up, I think she’d do okay enough but I don’t think she’d win against trump.
And none of that matters unless it convinces more people to support him. CANDIDATE Biden is weak and his ego will cost Dems the election, just like Hilary.
@@HarryF-tz5fo No, it's voting to stop Trump from destroying our democracy. I will vote for anyone who runs against Trump. That's the number one thing.
I appreciate you guys still having this conversation. I'm still mad at Biden for his debate performance, and I haven't been able to watch the ABC interview since I saw the clip of him saying he's not sure he watched the debate. You haven't watched the event that you're being raked over the coals for?!? C'mon, man!
I'm not American, but what struck me the most about the debate is how bad Biden was as a messenger on abortion. Not only did he pivot from abortion to immigration for some reason, but he was also talking about the trimester framework which the SC abandoned in Casey. If he says he wants to codify Roe, which one does he want to codify? Roe before Casey or after Casey? The reproductive rights issue has to be the most important in the campaign, and it doesn't seem to me that Biden could make it one. When women are actually losing their health because of abortion bans, the Democratic candidate shouldn't be talking about trimesters or any kind of stupid framework.
As a Biden voter (2020 and in this year's primaries) and contributor (3 gifts since last October), I want Biden to drop out. Just had dinner with 9 other Democrats here in Louisiana and ALL 10 of us want Biden to drop out. Our fear is that Biden cannot win. I did not believe that last Spring but I do now. I/We are not elites. Joe: please drop out for the good of the country.
I will vote for Biden if he's the nominee, but he's DOA if he's the nominee. If he cant do events after 8, or function effectively outside of 10-4, then that's all we need to know. What was the schedule of the major party nominees of the last 40 yrs? If Biden cant match that, he cant be the nominee
Allan Lichtman says that either Biden must run again or resign the presidency to let Kamala Harris be president again in order to keep both the incumbency advantage and the advantage of keeping their party united for the presidential election. Plus, every time there's been an open seat for the presidency and the party in power does not have a clear consensus nominee or heir apparent, the party holding the White House has always lost.
Jon's explanation of the polls was helpful. So, the majority of those polled feel that Joe Biden is too old to hold office. You can put me in that group. But if you were then going to ask me who I'm voting for - Biden or Trump - my answer would be Biden. I think we have to be careful how we interpret polls. And I have to add, I'm not very impressed with the media's coverage. They're piling on Joe Biden. I have yet to see headlines on Trump's unfitness for office. Why is that?
Yes. The piling on is gross. The media played a HUGE role in getting Trump elected the first time, and they’re repeating their mistakes by focusing constantly on Biden (who is doing the job right now) instead of talking incessantly about what a liar and authoritarian Trump is.
I laugh when dems say "But look at Trump, he's unfit." How do you know? The dementia in chief Biden has been showing major signs since 2019 but all of you buried your head in the sand and couldn't see it. GTFOH!! You have no clue what "unfit" looks like.
You've gotta be kidding me.... A Democrat gets so far a week of negative coverage and you're question is why not Trump? LMAO. Trump is easily the most negatively covered political candidate in history & easily over a dozen news agencies that try to come off as impartial unbiased news , but clearly work in tandem with the Democratic party run cover fire for any democratic candidate , they give glowing coverage with the vast majority of negative news coverage going to Republicans. This is the first time I can ever remember the main stream media ever give negative coverage to the Democratics in recent memory, especially to this scale. Bidens performance in the debate has just blown the credibility of the media propping up Democrats and blatantly lying.
@@kevindoukas8213 we know biden is better than trump. We know he's very likely going to lose and he's too narcissistic to know when to step down for the survival of the American experiment.
@@kevindoukas8213 Biden has had the chance to inform voters for months and he was never able to increase his poll numbers above Trump. Also, the choice is NOT Biden or Trump but Biden or Trump or staying at home. Biden is going to lose this election.
Thank you all for being real and not backing down due to bad faith attacks. We are all invested in this because it affects all of us (possibly for generations if you factor in the Supreme Court). It is absolutely legitimate to have a discussion about the best path to defeating Trump, particularly while we still have time (before the convention and official nominating process) to do something about it. Total respect for you guys 👍
This is what drives me crazy about this whole thing. If people actually read transcripts of Trump speaking, they’d see that it more often than not makes NO SENSE. But sure, let’s all go after Biden…
Trump’s weird, though. Trump’s like a cult leader. His followers don’t question anything he says, and they think they understand what he’s saying. Fortunately, dems are less of a cult, and we do question our leaders. There are major questions about Biden’s fitness. Of course we will all vote for him if in fact he stays as the nominee, but listeners of the pod are not the voters he needs to convince. He is failing, on all levels, to make a convincing case for his fitness for office. He’s failing to attack Trump effectively, which should be very easy.
Trump is a prolific liar who appeared to have energy and vitality. OTOH Biden appeared and sounded frail. His voice was very weak and he lost his train of thought. He’s unable to effectively campaign. He’s discounting voter and Dem congressman doubts of his fitness to campaign. Was it Biden’s ego or his inability to be self aware that kept him from stating years ago that he would be a one term President? Also, it seems that someone has been covering up his frailty from the public.
Yes, but that doesn't mean we should also be fielding an incoherent candidate. There is zero reason we should be setting the bar so low and sticking with a candidate that has a historically low approval rating and who is showing all the signs of dementia. We're falling into the same trap as MAGA where we care more about the ego of one man than we do about the future of the party. For all of Trump's faults, our candidate should be DESTROYING him in the polls. The fact that Biden is losing soundly to him should be a warning sign. There's an iceberg dead ahead - but like crazy people, we insist on sticking with the status quo. Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Dianne Feinstein, now Biden. Those who don't remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
He's not just some democrat trying to sell their agenda. He's been a proven leader and our president for 4 years. You guys are so concerned about his speech and gaffs. When Trump is president and we are in a full on fascist country, you'll wish we had every word a gaff.
@@MAC-op5fc Can it though? Not really. He has never won the popular vote; he just squeaked by in 2016 thanks to the ridiculous electoral college. That's not "the people" choosing him, that's a screwed up system letting him get lucky.
@@MaShcode Bidens debate was not a “simple message.” All the prep in the world couldn’t prepare for the savage and AR-15 style lying that trump dished out that night. To expect him to have a quick come back to his barrage in just 2 mins, AND have to answer a question in that time also… absolutely nothing is simple about that. Obviously, you’ve never had to make a presentation, teach a class, speak in public, or run the most powerful country in the world WHILE running a grueling campaign against the most undemocratic party to ever exist in this country.
Having done extensive campaigning for Stacey Abrams, I think it’s important to recognize how big of a role sexism plays here. There is a large contingent of men, both black and white, who typically vote Democrat, who just will not vote for a woman. Period. Look what happened to Hillary. And then, when you add racism on top of that… it’s a serious double whammy.
The reason why Biden didn’t mention Project 2025 was that his aides realised that Biden would struggle to articulate a description of what Project 2025 is.
I'd like to applaud Lovette in the ferocity of his convictions this week. I don't know what I expected for the democratic party here, but it has been an infuriating ride.
I don’t appreciate his campaign punching back against voters like me, an ordinary Democrat who has voted for him and will again, because I have no choice. I don’t appreciate Biden laughing about my concerns either. Frankly he’s pissing me off, and I resent the name-calling. He’s being a jerk. If he gets elected and then we’ve got to 25th amendment him later, I’m getting to the point I won’t even feel sorry or sad for him.
I voted for Biden too. I'm so angry at him, his family, and his staff for gaslighting the American people. He is more driven by his ego than the future of the nation. I've started thinking of him as Trump 2.0 because he just lies, bullies, & demands loyalty. He's no patriot. He should be ashamed.
"That's not how aging works." Tommy laying down the ONLY point that is important. Biden has CHANGED because that is how aging works. Do not come to this argument with past acts.
Just my opinion: I'm pretty sure he has seen lots of cuts from the debate, but he is extremely honest. He doesn't think he has seen the whole debate. Makes sense to me.
I would never have voted yes for Joe in the primary if I'd had any idea about his physical condition. Claiming that Joe is owed those votes is just plain wrong.
@@jankwartel1860 Trump's mental decline isnt worse than Joe's, I think that should be obvious. Trump is a psycho but he's always been that way, and people have already factored it into their political calculus. Ignoring Joe's current mental state will lead to a Trump win in November.
The level of denial is amazing, not as bad as MAGA, but it is heading that way. Biden really needs to step up and make more appearances. If he cant he must step aside. Im voting blue regardless but just being real, he won't win at this pace.
At this point, I'm voting Biden because I'm voting for the Biden TEAM. He's good at surrounding himswlf with smart, younger, people who can give him good advice. Also, I'd vote for a turnip before voting for anyone from the GOP.
I think Ro makes a lot of great points, but personally I don't subscribe to the idea that people want familiarity right now. The fact is that this race is between two old people who have already been president. People don't really like either of them but want to vote for the lesser of two evils, especially younger voters like me. I think bringing a fresh face into the race, especially against someone like Trump who is already so unlikeable, would be a slam dunk to win the race. I think that will actually ENERGIZE people to get out and vote, rather than begrudgingly choose who's the lesser of two evils. It seems so obvious but people in Washington just aren't getting it.
I love Biden. But, many people I know feel that they cannot vote for Biden after the debate. They don't like Trump, but will not vote for Biden because he seems too old. biden out.
Absolute opposite of what might have convinced me that Biden was still a viable candidate and president. He needed to admit that he is experiencing normal decline for an 80 year old and then explain how that decline does not compromise his ability to execute the duties of president, including waking at 3am and deciding if the US should launch nuclear weapons. Perhaps impossible task
It seems pretty clear to me that there is a choice between a king and a president. Let’s not forget about the future of the Supreme Court as well. For me, it is an easy decision. Biden.
I couldn't understand what Biden is saying. He whispers. He couldn't yell and fight against Trump in that lousy debate. He sure is yelling at Democrats without problem if you don't agree with him. Maybe we need close captioning.
President Biden, It’s not about what you’ve accomplished or to some extent, what you could do in a second term. It’s that the independent voters and swing states you need are slipping away. A new candidate is the best chance at getting them back.
If Biden's still the nominee come the general election, I'll vote for him, full stop. That said, despite all he's accomplished domestically during his term, I've had an increasingly difficult time supporting him. The biggest shift prior to the debate was his unwavering fealty to Israel as they continue to escalate their genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza. Then the debate and its fallout happened. Now he's just a shell of his former self struggling not to unravel. Despite how I feel about Gaza, it's hard to watch him deteriorate like this. And now, in his desperation, he is taking on some of the characteristics of the very threat he's supposed to be fighting against: Donald Trump. Attacking the media, telling the party to shut up and get in line, using lies about his polling and support to try to save face. I don't think the current Joe Biden has the humility to put the country above his own ego and fear of losing his own agency. We're in truly dangerous times and I fear for the future.
Guys, you are pretending that he can change it, he can’t, it is age, and you can‘t expect someone to pivot and all that if they are suffering from age-related issues.
He seems like a family man and life ain't forever. He should step aside and enjoy the rest of his time (however long that'll be) with his family and loved ones.

@@rossgoldberg5201 I understand that take and ultimately you don’t know what people will do on the day, polling be damned, take France, but having someone unpopular in a popularity contest seems courageous.
There is nowhere near the amount of time necessary for a new candidate to get through the virtue gauntlet that we on the left seem to love so much. If I were a betting woman, I'd say we're probably boned either way because it also seems like every "news" org on the planet is hyper focused on Biden's shortcomings while salivating at the ratings another Trump presidency will bring. I've said before and I'll say it again, even at his worst, Biden is far better than Trump. Why we aren't focused on the good Biden has done (and plans to do) is a fucking mystery to me. It seems like everyone is just focused on profiting from this whole thing. I'm trans, and my right to even be myself is on the ballot. I hope the ratings are worth me and everyone like me losing that right.
Don't stop telling the truth, guys. The American people need to hear this. Every. Day. He should step aside or step up. At a minimum, he should do back to back town halls for a week to show us he still deserves the votes we all gave him. Sure, they could question the timing, the motives, etc. I believe he should hand the office to Kamala for 2 weeks of medical leave at Walter Reed. TLDR::A Clean Bill of Health or Bust.
But, 'I've done so much for America'? Yes, including most of your time for the last 53 years. Hand the torch over to VP Harris & boost her further out into the light. Maybe she'll even pick a woman as her VP. Warren? AOC? Trust her to take it from here, Mr. President. Keep your promise & step aside for her. Trust us to do right by our country. Please, give us a chance to know her better now, not later. Do right by all of us, Grandpa Joe. Your laurels are safe to rest on now.
I really respect the pod save team for not pretending it was "one bad night." Moreover the idea that an uncontested primary represents the will of the voters is insulting.
He's still a disaster. It looks like "Weekend At Joe's". Can we please get Kamala up there. She may not be the perfect candidate. But looking at Biden, what do we have to lose?
First, thank you for continuing to give voice to the genuine and legitimate concerns that people have after the debate. I completely agree that if it turns out that Biden remains the nominee, I will fight like hell to get him elected, and I still have no doubt that based on even the least charitable interpretation of his current status, he would still be a better President than Trump every day of the week. I also think he's a genuinely good person who cares about the country and truly believed at the time he decided to run again, that he was the best option we had for beating Trump (and I'd even agree that at the time, he might have been right). But I also think that he is no longer in the same situation that he was when he made that decision, and that is a real concern that we can't just handwave away. Yes, obviously, if he's the nominee, die hard Dems (and I think most people who are really paying attention to who Donald Trump is and what Project 2025 is) will vote for him no matter what. The problem is that that's not necessarily enough - we need a broad coalition, and the whole reason his campaign fought for the debate now was because they understood that part of what has been holding him back from securing that extra support to be able to win in our extremely ridiculous electoral college situation (hi, deeply frustrated true-blue resident of always-red Kansas, here) were the concerns about his age. The debate was supposed to fix it, and it did the exact opposite. Everyone saying that we shouldn't have this discussion because there's still no question Biden is better than Trump is missing the point, which is that it doesn't matter if you or I think that, it matters that the undecided voters in swing states don't think that, and nothing that's happened at or since the debate has changed that, and if Biden isn't able to do something that will change that, then we need to address that gulf between what should happen and what is happening, and do it now while we still can. I don't blame Biden or anyone on his team for getting to this point, because I think he decided to run again in good faith, based on his capacity at the time, and things likely changed fairly recently. But if we can't acknowledge that and at least consider all of our options, especially since we haven't had the convention yet, then we're veering awfully close to being like all the people who had concerns about Trump but didn’t say anything because they chose party over country. But second, the real reason I'm commenting (I couldn't not address the serious stuff, but I was first compelled to open the comment box because of this) - the discussion about Project 2025 at the very end of the pod, and especially the part about how now there really is a secret government plan, gave me strong "Josh, does the President have a secret plan to fight inflation?" vibes. And I really needed that smile today, so thank you for that! It's been a while since my last re-watch of The West Wing, and I think in general the contrast between that universe and our reality is too depressing right now for me to dive in to a full re-watch now, but I'm definitely considering at least watching Celestial Navigation just to extend that bubble of happiness a bit! Thank you again for being here with us throughout all of this turmoil!
Fucking guy! It’s not about YOU giving it your all and getting a second place participation trophy! It’s about holding the line against a clear danger to us all
I voted for President Biden in the Primary. I will vote Biden/Harris in November. We must give them the majority in House and Senate. I'll be hopping mad if President Biden is not on that ticket in November.
Regarding the NATO quote from the ABC interview, it was grating to me as a European to hear Biden taking credit for "holding NATO together" and for the expansion with Sweden and Finland. The rest of NATO didn't just sit on their hands. The expansion was in no small part thanks to the diplomatic prowess of secretary general Stoltenberg. It felt like President Biden was taking credit for accomplishments that weren't entirely his, without recognizing all the important partners in that effort.
Ro Khanna’s interview tells me that he and the party don’t think Trump is a real threat to the democracy; because he thinks it’s okay if we lose 2024 and is talking about “the next gen”. Must be nice to be so insulated.
We went from epic rallies and City of Blinding Lights, to small events with carefully curated audiences. We went from hope and change to “at least it’s not Trump. We went from being a party of YES WE CAN to VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO!
There’s one conversation that one’s having. There are so many people who were casual democrats in that they believed that the party had so much more integrity than the Republican. Joes refusal to acknowledge the truth and the clear cover up of cognitive decline has done irreparable damage to the party. Him not stepping down will make it exponentially worse.
Actually, despite the concerns many pundits have about Biden's electability, if Biden stays in the race then he's very likely to win according to Allan Lichtman's 13 keys system which has had a 100% success rate with predicting every presidential election since 1984 (2000 was proven to be a stolen election according Lichtman's report on it and the election commission website site on it). Professor Lichtman says that either Biden must run again or resign the presidency to let Kamala Harris be president again in order to keep both the incumbency advantage and the advantage of keeping their party united for the presidential election. Furthermore, polls more than 2 months from a presidential election have no real predictive value. Dukakis was ahead of HW Bush in the 1988 presidential election by about 17 points on average until late August/early September when the polls shift dramatically in the favor of Bush followed by a 400+ electoral landslide victory for Bush. Follow professor Lichtman on his UA-cam @Allan Lichtman and watch a bunch of interviews he has already given on many mainstream media news channels. Also, get his book, 13 keys to the White House. Moreover, he's been essentially a top campaign consultant for Clinton's advisers, Obama's advisers, and for Biden's advisers.
"No clear flubs" in the interview Ro? How about "As long as I try my goodest that's what it is about." 😳😳😳 THAT IS NOT WHAT IT IS ABOUT. Biden step aside now.
I think y'all are doing a brave thing. I commend you and appreciate you skipping the gaslighting and staying true to the facts. I REFUSE to be led down the path Fox News has led the poor, pitiful people who listen to them on a 24-hour cycle.

I’d rather vote for a boiled potato over Trump, but the Democrats need to stop giving us “better than Trump” candidates and start giving us someone who will stop this handmaids tale hellscape we are living in. We need a true leader who will unite the country, the 99%, not just the Democrats.

I don't care about polls but which Democrat polls higher against trump right now than Biden? Biden is probably the only real choice we have right now. Maybe the best thing Biden could do is to say after reelection, he'll resign in January and let Kamala take over.
Both parties are corporate owned... 100% for the R-Party and 80% to 90%+ for the D-Party... 😒
"I don't need to stop driving, people will go out of their way to avoid hitting me even if I do stop randomly in traffic" is a pretty apt simile to "people will vote for me because the alternative is worse, even if I am showing some signs of decline"
yea, it's true, but not *everyone* is actively looking for someone stopped in the middle of the road, and not everyone is gonna go out and vote just because they're paying attention to how bad trump is. We need someone who can deliver that message to those people who *arent* paying attention or who *arent* already convinced, and Biden just isn't doing it.
THANK YOU FOR NOT GASLIGHTING US. Biden has serious issues he needs to deal with, or leave.

Thanks! We need this conversation.

Bigly.
Biden has no signs of Alzheimer’s. He has normal aging issues. Trump is the one with worsening dementia.
Joe Biden does not have Alzheimer’s! He has normal aging. He’s more frail, talks slower & softer. Trump has obvious symptoms of worsening Alzheimer’s.
I am so sick of hearing "Biden is the only one who can beat Trump". Says who, polling?? Biden is losing in those same polls.
We are going to lose if we stay on this course, we need to stop being cowards and listen to the general public - even if it means taking a risk.
As long as every illegal gets deported, I don't care who the Democrats nominate.
What they mean is I didn’t loose like Hilary, I barely won, and that’s it. It’s a far stretch to say he’s the only one who can beat him smh
I’ve been his supporter, and will still vote for him. But, he really needed to let someone else to run for president, the day that trump registered to run again! He’s done a great job, but he needs to retire.
Any Democrat who refuses to vote you are the one who giving trump the second chance. Replacing the President conversation is taking away the main reason why we need to vote in November in the first place.
With all seriousness when Clooney says Biden should drop out, it gives me a lot to consider. Not joking for one second.

You're keeping it 💯 mate
Keep Cope Alive 😂
If Biden cant match that, he cant be the nominee
yeah my interest in donating or volunteering is dripping significantly if Biden wins- if he's got this and you don't want our help, that is fine
Trump slept in until 11 am, while in office.
Money.
Media will end up being complicit with a fascist takeover

Thank you all for being real and not backing down due to bad faith attacks. We are all invested in this because it affects all of us (possibly for generations if you factor in the Supreme Court). It is absolutely legitimate to have a discussion about the best path to defeating Trump, particularly while we still have time (before the convention and official nominating process) to do something about it. Total respect for you guys 👍
Trump hasn’t been able to speak a coherent sentence in years!
@cityandgirl they have been going after Trump for 10 years! Trump bad doesn't make Biden good
Trump is a prolific liar who appeared to have energy and vitality.
I have never heard Biden mention Project 2025. Not once.
If one can’t communicate a simple message effectively to every voter one should not campaign to be PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Full stop.
But but but the people chose him!
He's not just some democrat trying to sell their agenda. He's been a proven leader and our president for 4 years. You guys are so concerned about his speech and gaffs. When Trump is president and we are in a full on fascist country, you'll wish we had every word a gaff.
Same can be said about Trump.
@@MAC-op5fc Can it though? Not really. He has never won the popular vote; he just squeaked by in 2016 thanks to the ridiculous electoral college. That's not "the people" choosing him, that's a screwed up system letting him get lucky.

That's right, Jon. It's about us, the American people , and it is sad that modern-day politicians forget this.

“I dont think I did no.” Ummmm okay Joe. This is not good my friends.
Why aren't we talking about how trump's mental decline at 78 IS SO MUCH WORSE THAN JOE'S IS AT 81? 😱🤢🤮
Joe Biden is acting like my Grandpa when we had to take away his car keys.
As James Carville says, "the other side gets a say". The onslaught of negative ads next week will be BRUTAL.
It’s time Biden speaks out
“Box of screams.” Lovett should be proud of that.

I voted for President Biden in the Primary. I will vote Biden/Harris in November. We must give them the majority in House and Senate. I'll be hopping mad if President Biden is not on that ticket in November.
Why will you be mad about it?
I think any kind of decline must have been recent. If this has been his normal for a while, I don’t think the campaign would have set up the debate.
