I just watched the video; "Life Lessons From 100-Year-Olds" by Life Hunters and one person there mention Sir Harry Lauder and this song, as one of his inspiration in life.
Sir Harry wrote this after the death of his only son, a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, killed in action in December 1916. His son John was then 25. What courage Sir Harry must have had, to have been able to put aside his own grief in composing these words and music which would become such strength and inspiration to countless others in their own struggles. God has truly blessed me through the words of this song.
Actual words courtesy of Sir Harry Lauder 1917 Ev'ry road thro' life is a long, long road, Fill'd with joys and sorrows too, As you journey on how your heart will yearn For the things most dear to you. With wealth and love 'tis so, But onward we must go. Keep right on to the end of the road, Keep right on to the end, Tho' the way be long, let your heart be strong, Keep right on round the bend. Tho' you're tired and weary still journey on, Till you come to your happy abode, Where all the love you've been dreaming of Will be there at the end of the road. With a big stout heart to a long steep hill, We may get there with a smile, With a good kind thought and an end in view, We may cut short many a mile. So let courage ev'ry day Be your guiding star alway.
@@Pathologymadesimple Can you imagine it? I am Ukrainian, now it is 2022 and after more than 100 years this song is more than relevant and gives vital energy when people need it (me in particular)
This brings back memories to me, my mum used to sing it to us on the way home from a long walk, when my brother and I were 6& 7 respectively.😢& she lost all her family in the 1st world war,but she was always up beat, and so grateful she had a new family in us.😊
I was brought up listening to this,my dad was a great Sir Harry fan, my dad died suddenly in nov 2004 and this record was on his record player at the time so guess what we had playing as the last song at his funeral.... still makes me cry.... beautiful words and I know them off by heart
Scottish Ann Dad also would play Sir Harry Lauder, on the 78s. He was half Scotch, spoke Gaelic, etc. This song is so true, as hard as it is, one must continue on, rightly! Dad, had some funny stories, he remembered as a youth, one is of his mom's father, driving down on the Scotch side of the road, in contrary to, what was done in the US, Connecticut. He got away with it, as this was of long ago, 1920s or so, the roads narrow, no markings, and the cars were Model Ts' etc. He would get upset at the other driver and tell them to drive on the right side of the road. Sorry for your loss, hope this story helps bring a smile back again.
I knew nothing of Harry Lauder until I found just this week that my grandmother, Margaret Baker/ Holliday lived in Cadzow row Hamilton in 1902 where she married at 14 a coalminer, like her father. I saw Harry lived there too, working the mines for 10 years and admire the spirit, resilience and humour that must have kept these folk going through hell. These homes often had no running water or sewerage system. He pleaded to help the miners, to no avail no doubt. Miners are still not given the respect they deserve. God bless him.
I heard Harry Lauder (I'm not sure he was "Sir") then at the Birkenhead Argyle and, although now in my nineties (just) and have correctly been diagnosed as "early Alzheimer's", I can sing every word - of the first verse at any rate. Although not a born Scot, I do have the right surname - and am a proud graduate of St Andrew's University.
+John McLeod Harry was knighted in 1919 by King George V so would have been Sir Harry by the time you saw him, I hope you are keeping well and that some of the music on here brings back some happy memories
my mum was a little girl who lived in Birkenhead and actually saw him at the Argyle. she also saw Marie Lloyd too she was born in 1927 and have now passed sadly
He raised huge sums of money from the war effort which is why he was knighted. I just read that he was the first British artist to sell 1 million records. I posted about him in an Edinburgh group and no one had heard of him. He just has a road named after him, nothing more.
Great lyrics. Adopted by Birmingham City fans as their "anthem". This version is currently played pre kick off. The players sang it on coach to play Arsenal in Qtr final at Highbury - 1956. Heard singing in in dressing room after 3-1 victory to get them into Semi finals In semi final the club gave out song sheets to fans - has been used since !! "KEEP RIGHT ON" or KRO now motto for Blues fans - and so fitting, was choice of Govan the Scottish winger of the Blues in 56
This version of the song was played as my dad went "through the curtain" at his funeral in 2002. Still sing it with all our hearts (slightly skewed) at BCFC. KRO! x
I have found comfort and inspiration in this song following the death of my husband. Thank you, Harry Lauder - still lightening people's hearts after more than 100 years. Truly a gift.
Today I finished a year at my first job. I wanted to give up so many times but this song helped me persevere. I'm happy I kept right on till the end of the road
I believe this guy was Scotland's most successful vocalist/composer and at one time the most popular entertainer in the world. The song always reminds me of my four years as a child in Stromness Orkney. I watched a local theatre group perform this around about 1953. Amazingly I can still remember most of the lyrics. It was a remote place and most of the time local people entertained themselves and there was an impressive amount of natural talent around. My dad was a lighthouse keeper there and he played in a local dance band on guitar led by a guy called Jim Robertson.

It's many years since I first heard this beautiful song which must be one of the greatest sources of encouragement ever to come out of Scotland. It shows the courage of Sir Harry Lauder to pen "The End of the Road" after losing his only son in the First World War. Back in 1985, I heard an old recording on Robbie Shepherd's "Reel Blend", one Sunday morning, of Sir Harry singing that beautiful old Sacred Song, "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep. So moving. Charlie, Aberdeen
I read his autobiography and it was great. As a teenager he had to go to work in coal mines but he would sing at local events for tips - and eventually singing became his world famous career.
Yes, a window into the hearts of a people that we are losing touch with. A people who dealt with problems with a song and a smile.I am so happy that you have preserved this music, it is an inspiration in these times. Thank you.
These old recordings are a window into a world very few people remember now, I have a growing collection of the music hall stars from the early 1900's on original 78 rpm uploaded.
I also just watched "Life Lessons from 100 year olds " and was inspired to look for this song, which I will now share with all my friends. So inspiring and sweet and so special for this terrible pandemic we are all living in. Thank you for this.
Super, unsurpassed and a Scot who us English can understand what he is saying the words are a true representation of the journey of life which everyone makes.
I have a family history narrative written by my great uncle George Dougan that has a section about Sir Harry Lauder. My great grandfather John Dougan worded at the Mt. Baker Theater in Bellingham , Washington as the janitor. "He stayed on the job for 10 years and although it meant working from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven nights a week , he seemed to enjoy it . One night, two hold -up men hid in the theater after the last show and after the crowd left jumped Dad and tied him up, wrapping tape all over his face. Then they went up to the office, broke into the safe and made their get away. Dad was found all tied up in the morning when the manager arrived. The other even that he enjoyed more than the first involved meeting with the great Scottish entertainer Sir Harry Lauder. One night after the last show Sir Harry was sitting in his dressing room, as Dad said , looking tired and forlorn. Dad said a few words in his scotch brogue and Sir Harry brightened up and invited him in. They sat there for several hours over a bottle of Scotch that Sir Harry produced, talking about the Old Country, as they had both grown up near Glasgow and had worked in the same coal mine at one time."
The story behind this song is a very sad and tragic one. Harry Lauder wrote this song for his only son, Captain John Lauder's death. Captain John Lauder tragically died on Thursday 28th December 1916 while he was fighting in World War 1.
Traditional Scottish Songs - Keep Right on to the End of the Road Sir Harry Lauder wrote this song after his son was killed in action in World War I. Keep Right on to the End of the Road Ev'ry road thro' life is a long, long road, Fill'd with joys and sorrows too, As you journey on how your heart will yearn For the things most dear to you. Life Lessons From 100-Year-Olds, so that how I landed here. Its really good song, positive messages. People had a visionary, that the current generation need to 'Keep Right On To The End Of The Road'.
Watching the series 'Churchill's Body Guard' brought me here - as this song is mentioned as one of his favourites during his time in office. Peace !! Rx
Always reminds me of tramping the North Coast of Scotland, John o'Groats to Ullapool 1980. The way was long but this song, and many others, kept our hearts strong. Now I'm tramping a very different road, a long steep hill of lockdown-induced depression, but I'm determined to keep going and fight on through. I'm actually from Essex but like John McLeod, I too have a home in St Andrews.
My dad who fought in World War 2 sang this song to me when I was wee. The words are beautiful and I think the SNP should jive it up and use it as the Scottish National Anthem . Proud to be Scottish.

I have seen one source which suggests that the road to which people should 'keep on to the end' was inspired by the straight Roman road from Albert to Bapaume on the Somme, up which the British and Imperial troops fought from Lochnagar Crater to the Warlencourt Knoll for four long and bloody months from 1 July to 5 November 1916. Sir Harry's son was of course killed on the Somme
Thank you for uploading this. It brings back all the memories of the first war (and of course the loss of his son), and the magnificent effort he mounted on behalf of the survivors. He is what WSC said in the second calamity of the century, the gentle "Minstrel". JFK

I first heard of this song in a Little House on the Prairie prequel book I had when I was 8 or 9 (I think it was On Tide Mill Lane, but I'm not sure). Almost 20 years later I've finally found out the tune! I must say, even though I like this version, I kind of prefer the version that my younger self came up with in my head. :P
i really fucking needed this right now.. and it just so happens the video i clicked was uploaded yesterday i'm going to think it's not a coincidence, and i'm going to keep right on :D
I am reminded of this song for a Capt , now Col. Tom. My Gt. Uncle also served in Burma with the Scots Guards. He was a Bandsman and also an Active soldier. He was captured and then imprisoned by the Japanese . But survived. He got the Nickname "Toey Foreman" Even had a cartoon drawing of him whilst incarcerated. He would often sing this and "Boots boots boots boots marching up and down again , there's no discharge in the morn " and "Trumpeter ! Who are you calling for "? among his many ditties.

old songs were such meaningful and motivational....great song sir harry .. life lessons brought me here
I have a family history narrative written by my great uncle George Dougan that has a section about Sir Harry Lauder. One night after the last show
Sir Harry was sitting in his dressing room, as Dad said , looking tired and forlorn. Dad said a few words in his scotch brogue and Sir Harry brightened up and invited him in. They sat there for several hours over a bottle of Scotch that Sir Harry produced, talking about the Old Country, as they had both grown up near Glasgow and had worked in the same coal mine at one time."
I'm going to return to this video years from now. It's all one big road.
The story behind this song is a very sad and tragic one. Harry Lauder wrote this song for his only son, Captain John Lauder's death. Captain John Lauder tragically died on Thursday 28th December 1916 while he was fighting in World War 1.
Traditional Scottish Songs
- Keep Right on to the End of the Road
Sir Harry Lauder wrote this song after his son was killed in action in World War I.
Keep Right on to the End of the Road
Ev'ry road thro' life is a long, long road,
Fill'd with joys and sorrows too,
As you journey on how your heart will yearn
For the things most dear to you.
With wealth and love 'tis so,
But onward we must go.
Chorus:
Keep right on to the end of the road,
Keep right on to the end,
Tho' the way be long, let your heart be strong,
Keep right on round the bend.
Tho' you're tired and weary still journey on,
Till you come to your happy abode,
Where all the love you've been dreaming of
Will be there at the end of the road.
With a big stout heart to a long steep hill,
We may get there with a smile,
With a good kind thought and an end in view,
We may cut short many a mile.
So let courage ev'ry day
Be your guiding star alway.
Chorus:
Chilly Cold this isn’t a traditional scottish song man, scottish trad music is something different
Such an inspiring song

That's the longest pipe stem I've ever seen. This recording is 97 years old and could still rouse even the most flagging spirits.
Keep Right on to the End of the Road Lyrics
Every road through life is a long, long road,
Filled with joys and sorrows too,
As you journey on how your heart will yearn
For the things most dear to you.
With wealth and love 'tis so,
But onward we must go.
Chorus:
Keep right on to the end of the road,
Keep right on to the end,
If the way be long, let your heart be strong,
Keep right on round the bend.
If you're tired and weary still journey on,
Till you come to your happy abode,
Where all you love that you're dreaming of
Will be there at the end of the road.
With a big stout heart to a long steep hill,
We may get there with a smile,
With a good kind thought and an end in view,
We may cut short many a mile.
So let courage every day
Be your guiding star always.

Watching the series 'Churchill's Body Guard' brought me here - as this song is mentioned as one of his favourites during his time in office. Peace !! Rx
My grandma loved this song so much; so do I.

What a song. KRO.
"And that's my motto"
-Century old man
Always reminds me of tramping the North Coast of Scotland, John o'Groats to Ullapool 1980.
It belongs to BCFC, courtesy of a fine Scotsman, Alex Govan, rip. KRO!
and if this makes you feel nostalgic, ur about a hundred yrs old already :D
I’m only 16 and yet I feel connected to this song real well
I just watched the video; "Life Lessons From 100-Year-Olds" by Life Hunters and one person there mention Sir Harry Lauder and this song, as one of his inspiration in life..

My father, who was a 23 year old US GI and spent 3 years in the UK, France and Belgium during WWII, would sing this to us with a pseudo-brogue.
Love from Somalia.
I jus love this song I found this past few years ago and still came back here. I can't say anymore words bc it's too nostalgic and idk why
This will be played the day i go to !my reward. KRO.
Thank you for uploading this. It brings back all the memories of the first war (and of course the loss of his son), and the magnificent effort he mounted on behalf of the survivors.
He is what WSC said in the second calamity of the century, the gentle "Minstrel".

This is like my school song rn!! N I love the message it conveys
i really fucking needed this right now.. and it just so happens the video i clicked was uploaded yesterday
i'm going to think it's not a coincidence, and i'm going to keep right on :D

Wisdom is beautiful
I am reminded of this song for a Capt , now Col. Tom. My Gt. Uncle also served in Burma with the Scots Guards. He was a Bandsman and also an Active soldier. He was captured and then imprisoned by the Japanese . But survived. He got the Nickname "Toey Foreman" Even had a cartoon drawing of him whilst incarcerated. He would often sing this and "Boots boots boots boots marching up and down again , there's no discharge in the morn " and "Trumpeter ! Who are you calling for "? among his many ditties.
My heart and eyes are full right now
Blues blues blues!
