- The history of blues music in Chicago flowed through Chess Records. In the movie Cadillac Records, we learn a lot about that history. But is it accurate? That's what we'll find out as we compare the movie to history.
This is an audio podcast, so it's perfect to listen in the background for whatever you're doing. Learn more about the podcast at www.basedonatruestorypodcast.com
I bought a Howlin Wolf CD for $3 at a vintage music store in Wichita, Kansas. Love it.
Another story that made its way into the movie that was true was Muddy stealing Hubert Sumlin from Howlin Wolf and because Hubert himself was actually in the movie he may have told them that same story and they decided to put it in. Hubert said in an interview, "Wolf told me "GO ON PLAY WITH MUDDY! You'll be back..." With tears almost welping up in his eyes" (which the movie gets right in that scene with the expression on wolfs face.) Muddy told Hubert too have his clothes ready and to be at his house the next morning. He brought one suit and Muddy laughed and said "We are doing 31 nights man, you gonna need more than one suit." And by the end, he had to drive 1500 miles or so back to Chicago sick as a dog, sitting on a feather pillow, and dog tired. He made it back too the club and called Wolf saying "man I dont think Ill be able to play ever again." Wolf arrived in less than 10 minutes, walked up too Muddy and said "Im here to pick up my son..." looked at Hubert and said "Get yo shit..." and they left.
JD Bluesman Very interesting

You left out the one person that was the pride of chess... The late great bo diddley.... He made more money then all them others and its a damn shame that no one pays attention....😢😢😢😢
Surprise to find you insightful review. Thank you for bringing truth and reality to our history!
Also Little Walter actually did shoot another "Little Walter" for using his name.
That brings me joy
Yep he sure did...You're right
Hell naw 😂
My favorite blues musicians are Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Freddie King
you forgot Lightnin' Hopkins & Sonny Boy Williamson ii
I love this video...I have subscribed and hit the "All" bell. I look forward to seeing more and more of these...as well as sharing them with anyone who, like me loves Based on True Stories movies.
Bobby Bland, B. B and Albert King, are my favorite blues singers. With much respect to other blues singers. I enjoyed your channel. ♥
Bobby Blue Bland
Just found your podcast on Spotify! Really good stuff and research! Since Chess is staple to my home town Chicago, I always wanted to know about this record company and did a great job providing some good info! Keep it up.
Cheese records was by 2 brothers.
Its was one think that bugged me about the movie.
howling wolf is my favorite blues man I think don't the credit he derved the real king of the blues not water down like b.b. king
Michael Moore Hey Hold on BB King scared much richness in his blues as Wolf and Muddy Cut meaner records than Wolf if not toe to toe.
Don't talk about my lucielle like that
My favorite also, that voice n moaning
Brian Jones formed the rolling Stones not mick jagger and Keith Richards
Wow so much bullshit, worse than the movie
It takes more than one guy to form a band. So, Mick, Brian and Keith formed the band.
Don't forget about Ian "Stu" Stewart. He is the one who got the ball rolling with the formation of the Stones. And when they got a manager, he was reduced to roadie and played a little piano for them. They did keep him on until his death in 85
@@micawber7162 nope!!! Brian Jones named and pick the members
"Rolling Fork"; colorful AF.
SAY MOS DEF'S NAME!
Love what you're doing, good luck with your channel
Thank you!
I'd still like to know if the scene in the film where Little Walter shoots and kills an imposter who calls himself 'Little Walter' is true.
Gwyn Buckley I’d also like to know
@@winstonchurchill624 I have always heard its true
I read Glover's exhaustive biography of Jacobs. He even writes about ''unfounded Little Walter rumors'' (like hard drug use). Glover never even mentions an accusation to the effect of shooting anyone. ''Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence''. Given the incredible inaccuracies in Cadillac Records, the answer can only be that the accusation is B.S. Like every other prof. harp player, I owe a deep debt to Walter Jacobs, and pointing out the obvious, is an easy way to pay him back. I've studied his bio. and music since the 80's and I NEVER heard even the rumor, and was appalled by the scene. It was exploitative and racist. Be wary of ''learning truth'' from a movie. Glover's bio. is called ''Blues With A Feeling'', still available and well worth reading for the musicologist. It is FAR too detailed for the casual ''Blues'' fan.
Yes it is true that little Walter shot someone for usin his name
It been going for years...just always find something to steal.
Where’s the pictures?
Brillant!
Producer haha i respect the patreon hustle
Bills: An unfortunate truth in life 😊
The movie was pretty liberal with the facts, but it was entertaining IMO.
Chess records did not become popular until the Moonglows made the hit [sincerely] that crossed over to both white and black groups. Alan Freed and Harvey Fuqua co wrote many songs together. Bo didley also was around and did Bo Didley. However Chess created a new label called Checker. The Moonglows Then became a second group called the moonlighters. Blues tunes did not put Chess Records on the map.
Interesting
Addressing the relationship. All statements are all.eg.ed Afro-Centric women did not discuss affairs with children and definitely would not have openly admitted to an Anglo boy that she was encumbanced in an entanglement with his dad unless in Etta's case she was on a drug binge. But it was rumored in South Central that this boy paid her a visit with a couple of buddies who had a history of battery and assault on other individuals. Some reported that the boy stayed outside Etta's home while his buddies went inside. Is said she was threated to stay silent or change her statement to facts. The boy and his mother were primarily responsible for Etta not receiving her royalties. They used there influence to rob her of payments until they agrred to include her masters in the sale of Chet's databank of music. Initially they made sure that they would not be sold while at the same time leaving them in storage outside of the covers and other fair use cases. She said the boy told her he would arrange to release her masters for sale. They reneged on their end for years until they desparately needed the money.
There is no evidence or (prior to this movie), even the rumor, that Walter Jacobs shot a man for using his name. Outrageous slander in that movie. But it was entertaining.
Len Czyz lol
Who be driving that cadilac that goes to the sportman bsr and grill sre they spys
WHAT ?
Just about every popular song floating around was at some point taken without compensation from the Afro-Centric community. Entire genres like country music, marengue, and reggaeton, Kpop, have been absconded. The Beatles, Elvis, and many others have admitted to going into Afro-Centric/colored dives listening to the songs and music then copying the scores and or lyrics. People would here their music being performed by these thieves and could not afford to defend what was theirs. By the way, blue suede shoes were primarily an Afro-Centric American thing until Elvis stole he song, alle. gedly.
