Like most other Flemish coastal towns, a main characteristic of this one is that it is a national and to a certain extent international seaside resort, as even Germans have found their way to the place.
Apart from the sandy beach, there's a structure unique along the Belgian coast: a 350-m long art-deco pier, the Belgium Pier, constructed in 1933.

I was there in 1963 and it was fab. Now the beach has been spoiled as you can see it as too much on it. Everywhere was chips, best sausage ever with Mayo. Belgium was famous for chips everywhere and shops full of the greatest cream cakes, now all disappeared with rubbish burgers. Blankenberge was always my favourite place and went back for years. Wouldn’t want to go back again. Times do change but not for the better

Wir fahren seit 6 Jahren jedes Jahr nach Blankenberge, Oostende,… .
Es ist zwar leider insgesamt sehr teuer geworden, aber wenn man weiß wo
kann man man auch gut und günstig Essen gehen.
Wir genießen es immer sehr.

2:55 30 years ago this sign would have been a warning not to walk topless (ladies only) in town. Now even the men can't walk topless, and not even bikinis are allowed. The times they are changing, and not for good.
