Isn't a pedal, actually he is playing "behind" the guitar bridge, a string extension that only few guitar have (like the fender jaguar or the fender jazzmaster) Playing the strings behind the bridge makes a crazy thin and treble sound. Molko use this sounds a lot on the early Placebo's songs (like on "Bruise Pristine" or "Nancy Boy") You can check the intros of The National's "Mistaken for strangers" or Sonic Youth's "Bull in the Heather" for another examples of playing "behind the brigde".
i don't understand how people can tell the difference between 'old' and 'new' placebo.. they're always been changin' from an album to another! look at the first one, placebo, and the second one, WYIN...they're totally different! and so on for every single record.. so i think if u like placebo it's just for their ability and will to improve and take on new challenges. if u're looking for a band plainly repeating itself, please look elsewhere
This is Placebo at their best
