  • These videos are a collection of small pieces of footage all filmed around North Dublin as far as we understand. They show Dublin during the 60's still having a special pace of life. It shows parts of North Dublin, including Coolock Ballymun.
Once again firefighter and historian by all accounts Mr Leslie Crowe has captured some great footage and with the music accompaniment from Leslie's son Noel we are once again transported to a different time and place.
There is more of this to come and it is great to see that this is being passed on to anyone that is interested around the world. So if you know any of the people in the videos please email. Hope you enjoy. lorcanfilmunit@gmail.com

I grew up in Coolock 1968 to 1985, Cromcastle area. Coolock village, yes I remember that. and the Sheaf of Wheat! myself and my cousins, friends used to meet there every Friday night! I remember the grand opening of Northside Shopping Centre! I went to Colaiste Dhulaigh, one of the first schools to have both boys and girls attending. I remember the smell of Cadbury's early morning when walking to school. I remember the smell of Tayto crisps floating in the air. I worked in in a shop in Moore St. until at age 21 I emigrated to America. This brings back a lot of memories of my childhood. Love Ireland forever. Thanks for sharing!

I know, very sad that Cadbury's and Tayto gone. Many things we took for granted are now gone. On the good side Ireland now is 180 degrees beyond what I and many others thought it could be in the 1980's. Cheers to you and yours and wishing you a very happy New Years!

Hi. Are you sure you didn't live in Greencastle. Because you wouldn't smell tayto or Cadburys going to school if you lived in Cromcastle.

I lived in Ballymun Balcurris Gardens from Feb 67-Sep-81 it was the great growing up there ,the flats had pram sheds we'd use in the winter when we were teens they had electricity lights and even a toilet with a basin and hot water ,we'd use car seats and use coloured light bulbs. In the Summer we'd go to Santry Forest, Ballymun was like one big playground we'd even get on top of the lifts going up the towers it was better than any carnival ,and the carnival and circus would come in the Summer , Now they wiped it off the map. Ruined it That film was really great

I was a child in the 60's - we moved to Macroom Road Coolock in 1965, into a brand new "housing corporation" house - all the houses looked the same as did the streets - there was no school at first so we had to go "Clonshaugh" - as a child I didn't know what that was - it was a ?school ?church ?convent - I just remember it had a big wall around it (?stone wall) - we didn't go there very long because they put portable buildings called "pre-fabs" down the other end of Macroom Road and these served as a temporary school and church for a while - I remember making my first communion there - then the 2 new schools and church were built - my sister and I went to St. Maria Goretti Girls School in Macroom Road, and my brother went to St. John Vianney Boys School which was over the other side of the river - I made my confirmation in April 1970 and then we migrated to Australia in September 1970 - my father worked at the Cadbury factory initially then he got a job in the city delivering telegrams - when we came to Melbourne he drove trams for the rest of his working life - I don't recognise much of what's in your video but I did enjoy watching it - thank you.

What a great film. Brings back so many memories of growing up in Kilmore. My Uncle, who lives on Riverside rd once told me he could walk in a straight line from his house to Whitehall church to catch a bus into town. Amazing, when u think of all that's in between there now.

Took me a moment to realise that the start was the beginning of NorthSide Shopping Centre being built and seeing the old Sheef o wheat or as I've known it the Whiff O Sh*t, I was born in 88 and never knew the area any different than the way it is now really, great to see it in a video like this

Hi Lorcan Film Unit great film, I think the first 28 secs are taken from where Cromcastle Park meets Cromcastle Road, with the cars seen on Kilmore Road. We used to ramble all about the area. The cottages at 1.15 sec, I think these stood where the old Malahide Road crossed the Santry River (Coolock Bridge) they would have faced onto the road which is now the entrance to the Odeon Cinema Complex.

Hi. Great video. That is St Brendan's church in Coolock village at 1:43. A new church was built some time later right behind it. The old church was refurbished in the late 90s and now serves as a community centre.

To my view Leslie Crowe is the irish Vivian Maier: two wonderful artists who knew that reality was changing more and more quickly and left us their masterpieces. Only after they passed away we now discover their works because as persons they were humble, shy and romantic

Hi, great old clip! Recognised a lot here from where I grew up.
.... 0:39 houses in Coolock Village, they've cut the arches off the hedges though!
... 0:41 Bank of Ireland in Coolock Village can be found on the right here today, and that's Cadburys factory on Oscar Traynor road to the left in the background.
.... 1:34 View of Springdale Road from St.John the Evangelist Church (Church of Ireland) cemetary. That bungalow is still there!
.... 1:41 St.Brendan's Old Coolock Church in the village.
.... 1:55 Kyles pub,. It's still there, and I might just pop in for a pint next week!

Across the road from the Sheef of wheat was an old big house and garden. I think it was in the video. Now there are houses and a line of retail spaces that once had a 7 11 and an off licence.

Hi, The video which i'm making is about old coolock and clonshaugh the way those areas used to be in the 1940's,50's and 60's before all the changes took place. My mam and dad were from those areas and i want to mix your footage of coolock with my collection of old black and white and colour family photos featuring my mam and dad, their siblings and their parents to have it all combined together to show what it was like for them growing up in those areas.I hope to show the video on facebook via utube to my remaining relatives who are still here today in the world.I could show you the video when its complete for you to see exactly what i've done with your footage and i could credit your company in the video if you like. Kind Regards, Alan Garrigan
