Nice setup! Love the watering system with the gravity fed IBC. what is your solution when temperatures dip to freezing here in east Tennessee? We have tried a few things with our IPPs… but always interested in new techniques!
Your shelters are also interesting… do the barrels have water in them for support? Clever!

I plan on insulated tube covering and tank heaters.
Not sure how it will work.
May have to change things up in the winter.

The 55 gallon drums are empty but screwed together so they are super heavy

Hello, Wow…. What a transition from Arizona to Tennessee. Smart choice, beautiful country there.
Not sure how you popped up on my feed.
I too raise Meishans. In northern Maryland. So… I’d like to take a moment to welcome you as a fellow Meishan Breeder.
I got my first unrelated breeding pair delivered from Laura Jensen. Also got a second unrelated pair.. again a gilt from Laura & a boar from Wendy @ Imperial farms. Flown up from Georgia. Two of the best with incredible knowledge of this breed!
So all mine are unrelated too.
A word of advice… you’ll want to wait to breed your gilts once they reach one year old. Meantime prepare yourself for some screaming when they’re going through their heat cycles. LOL ❤
Keep them far away from Ogre. You’ll know what I’m talking about when it happens.
You are absolutely right about the growth rate of the bacon type hogs. You’ll be able to butcher them within 4-5 months as opposed to the Meishans who’ll take forever to grow out. My first litter just turned one year old. Currently breeding 5 gilts I retained.
Second litter are only 5 months old. Got a 7 month wait before breeding them.
Also, a great source for food… check with your food markets in your area. I am fortunate enough to get free produce each day & my Meishans love it. Also, if you have any cider houses’ ask them for their spent apple pectin. Breweries as well. They’ll be more than happy to give it to you.
Hog feed costs are crazy these days. Careful not to feed any foods with mold… It causes mycotoxins which can lead to miscarriages & mummified piglets.
If you’d ever like to chat about your Meishans look me up on the AMBA breeder locator.
I’d love to share more interesting facts with you about this breed.
I like that water system! What a great idea. ✅
Even your housing. As long as your Meishans are dry….those shelters will work out perfectly for your pigs. Give them plenty of deep bedding in the winter months.
I’m very happy that you & your family have decided to raise the Meishans’. It’s the small dedicated farmers like you who’ll make a difference in helping to save this critically endangered breed.
With that said I thank you sir. Take care & best of luck to you & your family in Tennessee!
      🙏
