    As a Maldivian, this was probably the most comprehensive overview of my country I’ve seen on YT, especially about how tourism only benefits the select few owners and non of it trickling down to the us locals. Maybe one fact I would change is, there’s quite a lot of Maldivians employed at resorts thus creating quite a massive black market for trading dollars (banks are extremely limited in foreign transactions so we are forced to buy dollars). Also the new presidency has more or less reverted back to the days of Yaameen where censorship of media is coming into full effect with talks about limiting apps like WhatsApp just around the corner. It sucks here and I wish I could live anywhere but here. Ask me anything if you guys want to know more.

      Are there things that regular people can do to help raise awareness, or do you believe that may make things worse? Do you see a way for a tourist to be able to visit your country and do better to support the locals (and not the resorts)?

    It's weird that you show so much guilt for the British rule. For one, you personally had nothing to do with it. For another, from your own words, I take it that this country was ruled by harsh dictators when left completely on their own, so I think that your guilt is wildly misplaced. I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of Maldivians would prefer the British to Sharia Law. Hell, seems like all the good politicians, again, paraphrasing your own words, went to Britain for education or else in exile. So I don't really get the white/British guilt.

    • @Talshere88
      @Talshere88 5 місяців тому +4

      Welcome to most British below the age of 35. Sorry for a history they know nothing about with no regard for what was there before or after. And no real regard for what it entailed at the time. Which in the case of the Maldives, was virtually identical to the modern Japanese/USA relationship except they werent completely wiped out first and noone would describe as tyrannical. A lot of people dont know what the term "protectorate" means, and the fact it is usually a voluntary association. One we can expect to see revived should the US ever lose interest in patrolling the worlds seas for free. Because funnily enough nations on sand bars typically arent capable of existing independently without aid nor deter aggressors and so typically are rapidly annexed. What protected the Maldives in the 1500s was they were a pain in the arse to get to. Something that stopped being true by the 1800s when they were "en route". The final irony of being "guilty for history" is that half the people trying to reform the country and make it liveable for the actual citizens fled to the UK for refuge.

    • @theskintexpat-themightygreegor
      @theskintexpat-themightygreegor 5 місяців тому +3

      @@Talshere88 Yeah, I've been getting that impression over the last few years, British people apologizing for shit they don't understand, just because their peers tell them they should, or because they fear backlash from woke idiots who know even less. It's really annoying. Better they just not address the issue than to get it completely wrong. Karl could easily have just said it as it was without the apologies. WITH the apologies, he came off sounding like a complete tosser, and this isn't the first time he's done that. @Karl - lose the white guilt, and, again, no one is weirded out about your name but you, and MAYBE the odd 12-year-old: "Hi, I'm Greg Zeigler...and yes, that is my real name." What IS that?? Also, by the way, Talshere88, I'm starting to worry about the U.S. pussing out. I was shocked that they didn't come to Ukraine's defense when they were attacked. They had promised to, in the 90s, when Ukraine gave up their nukes. And now, here we are, close to three years into a war that the U.S. could have put an end to in days, as promised, and an increasingly emboldened Putin (not to mention Xi). This is actually starting to scare me.

    Your style is good. I can totally see this presented with beer breaks if you could only get a brewery sponsor. In summation, "the country of Maldives is Bad". Please stop apologizing for something you had nothing to do with (British History). You start to sound like an American. If you're going to do that, take credit for providing the Maldives with its first genuinely elected president educated in Britain.
