mrs howard is one of the most beautiful people i have ever known, in the summer of 1970 i became friends with her children, i was 8yrs old. my memory is very vivid of her always trying to make things better for the citizens of newburgh. she was our hope for change to make things better, all of the things she speaks of are pure facts. urban renewal came and wiped out our historic neighborhoods, property that was surrounded by dilapidated properties were paid pennies on the dollars for their property. the waterfront property is very valuable, it was then and it is now. low income housing was built far away from the waterfront, in basically a swamp, wetlands, this is upstate ny, yet we had a truck that would come nightly and spray insecticides for the mosquitos that were there by the millions. in regards to michael lembhard i ask anyone to just read the autopsy report, a total of 15 shots hit him, 8 entered his back half of his body. 4 officers enter a small 15 by 15 foot room, two draw weapons two dont, the two emptied their weapons, 22 rounds fired, how did they miss 7 times in such a small room. back to the Howard family that is loved by all that know them, their family has been involved in trying to make things better for over 50 yrs, we all know who we voted for, we all know who should have been elected. we also know that corruption by the evil doers is real, if money is coming in and nothing is being built or repaired then where is the money, and yes of course there are small achievements being done they are not stupid enough to steal 100 % of the funds these are white collar criminals they have lawyers and such guiding them through their corrupt endeavors. but God has been watching all along and like Mrs Howard we are people of faith and even though are church leaders are not speaking out against the evil that has been taking place in our community we the believers are and will speak out. slowly things are getting better, you can go to our waterfront and see improvement, you wont see many puerto ricans or any black people working their or being patrons either, you may see some central americans working in the kitchens, they seem to be the new slaves in america, and yes i said it and oh by the way im a white man, caucasian 100 % but i was born apparently on the wrong side of the tracks, grew up associating with the wrong people, thank god for allowing me to have been neighbors with people like the Howards and the Coolidges (uncle mark) in the video. we never judged one another by the color of our skin Circumstances demanded we judge one another by the content of our character.

Gentrification is happening all over the country. It is rampant here in my city in the West. It is driven by economics and cannot be stopped/reverse white flight. It is like a run away train. It means neighborhood transformations at a cost. That cost is dislocation for the lower income folks. Little to no diversity. It is like removing one culture and replacing it with an entirely different culture. Money talks.
You can really tell who's from comfortable living situations when they don't understand the issues of this. If all gentrification did is shape up a neighborhood and improve the living conditions, that would be fine. Nobody would complain about that. But that's not the full story of the situation. When people are forced out of their communities because they can no longer pay for the overly expensive housing, the issue isn't repaired, it's just shuffled off somewhere else.
Ruth Glass in the UK created the term gentrification in 1964. poor people were displaced and wealthy people moved into their communities and built it up.
you've always had slum clearance and regeneration projects, a friend of mine grew up on a housing estate which ended up half derelict and attracted crime, it got bulldozed and it's a better place for it and the area his parents ended up in was much more safe for them and calmer especially at night
everyone in this comment section act like they don't know wtf going on or why gentrification is bad for people who have been in these communities 2nd and 3rd generations and get no help from the federal or local gov. but let a few people who wouldn't normally ride through the neighborhood let alone stay buy a few run down houses fix them up an appointment few years later if not sooner the people who have been here all there lives can't afford to stay

Either the state or private enterprise. The key is to try and bring the local community along rather than pricing them out of the area.

SMH..black people logic. So because she was a former pop start idol, those credentials somehow makes her an ideal candidate to solve the expansive declining economic issues of the city??? These people are not case workers dealing with the SYMPTOMS and not idealist who understand macroeconomics to actually bring jobs/enterprises (income and tax revenue) back into the city.
I agree with her concerns but a lot of what she says shows why she should be mayor. No president is going to respond to some phone call form a small town just because you call. He's got 318 million americans to worry about. Also, what moneys is she talking about? A mayor has the power to set the vision and the agenda for how money is allocated and developed in the city. The government only sends money based on the projects you run.
***** Not to blow your argument out of the water or anything, but why would someone poorer want to move OUT of a developing neighborhood, those that already live there more than likely have renters agreements or mortgages that aren't likely to change, more stores come, more jobs come, more public safety comes. When you have takers and no makers you can't simply move a city forward. This Women is a moron, people who work hard and make money don't want to live next to a section 8 housing complex. I moved out of my home a few years ago because the Government decided to build a Section 8 housing down the street from me. Crime went up, taxes went up to support these freeloaders, property values plummeted. My neighbors moved out, and soon I followed. Last year I passed through my old neighborhood just out of curiosity and I was sadden by what I saw. My old neighborhood is all Black, and fell into disrepair. It went from a neighborhood that people used to leave their doors unlocked, now it is a place with bars on the windows. Fact of the matter is this, Ghettos are not built, they are created by the inhabitants. Now with the Obama Administration using HUD to force people to live in close proximity of Section 8 housing, Whites are packing up, taking their tax money, and migrating to greener pastures. That is why it's called " White flight". Now that Whites are losing places to escape, they are now buying up cheap property and building ( intentionally) expensive houses, condos, etc to turn these neighborhoods into places they want to live in, and I don't blame them. No one wants to live in or near a ghetto, no matter how much the government tries to force them to.
