- Firaaq is a political thriller depicting the 2002 violence in Gujarat, India, and looks at the repercussion in terms of the effects on the lives of people. The movie documents the problems of the minority community to come to terms with the fact that they have to start from scratch and rebuild everything that they had. It follows the life of ordinary people, some who were victims, some silent observers and some perpetrators, a month after the violence in Gujarat.

It is powerful and potent storytelling, a stark testament to a dehumanizing episode that puts us all to shame, of what we allowed to happen. Nandita das has made a film that is haunting and heartbreaking and generates a rage.. The casting is spot on.

The theme song of the film "Firaaq" was making the sad tune. And from that sad tune, I made this song as the tribute to the death of the best singer Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (16th August is the death anniversary of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, with the history told that Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was suffering from Cardiac Arrest while reaching Cromwell Hospital and died there at the end on 16th August, 1997, Saturday)- 1:36:45 to 1:41:35.
दरअसल, Action का Reaction है फिल्म- फिराक़। जिसमें इस उन्माद (action) का प्रारम्भ भी दिखाया जाता तो बात ही कुछ और होती। लेकिन यह दिखाना नन्दिता जी का agenda नहीं। क्योंकि एक वर्ग पर सहानुभूति और दूसरे को आरोपित करना ही इस फिल्म का नकारात्मक पहलू है। अच्छा होता यह भी प्रमुखता से दिखाया जाता कि दंगे क्यों हुए? उनका सूत्रपात किसने किया? और क्या जन-धन हानि केवल वर्ग विशेष की ही हुई? नहीं। इसलिए न तो मैं इस फिल्म का समर्थक हूँ और न ही और न ही इस निर्देशिका का।
हाँ, यह जरूर कहना चाहूँगा कि-
सख़्त तलक तो ठीक है लेकिन, पत्थर होना ठीक नहीं।
हिन्दू-मुसलमां ठीक है लेकिन, कट्टर होना ठीक नहीं॥

it is sad that now almost 12 years later, this film led by great actors still brings in the discussion of liberal india vs right wing india. we find that India has transgressed and shifted itself further into the paradigm of extremism (on a political) front and so some its people pitch up tents on either side of the fault line. India tried so hard for many years since its independence to keep itself neutral but in recent times has succumbed to those very ideas it did not want itself to painted as. not so long ago we found india to be a liberal country, now that is a dot in the past which is fading away in the distant.
