Here's what I've concluded from having and observing these conversations as they pertain to Black issues: very many in our community are at the mercy of cognitive dissonance and do not have the self-awareness to know to regulate that and accept new information because accepting new information directly challenges that which they've constructed their egos with, which largely includes prejudices based in misinformation. Now, that is not entirely their fault; that is largely due to the educational system in this country, which is very intentional in systematically maintaining a baseline of ignorance and, therefore, a baseline of manipulation. Approximately 35% of American adults cannot read above a 7th-8th grade level. Defunding english programs is only worsening those statistics. What happens when everyday people cannot read to the level that out thought leaders and scholars write? Critical thought falls, logic falls, discernment falls, and the -isms rise to maintain this status quo. Everyone wants to shout "Do your research!" When most people can't even differentiate actual research from propaganda. Most don't even know where to look for verified, unbiased studies and publications about the issues we care about. It isn't even enough to simply tell people to read when there's just as many bigots publishing books as activists. It has to start with teaching people how to think again. Or else all this ignorance will continue to fester.
