I never thought it was an actual song, from an actual artist. I thought they were at the studio like “okay how would robots sing a song of slavery?”
This is a hilariously underrated comment. I had the same exact experience 😂
Not just slavery, but also genocide and organ harvesting
i have a feeling they designed that entire scene inspired from the song alone
Black markets are necessary
How robots sing of slavery? 🧐

Totally not me writing a new D&D campaign based off this song
I have no idea how the makers of Robots ever found this song considering how relatively obscure it is but I am glad they did since it fits perfectly with the scene that introduces the chop shop to the audience.
They probably had a guy on the team who was a fan, lucky them.
@@bearoyay Perhaps so, I only wish I could add this information about the song being in the movie to the albums Wikipedia page but they being too lazy to look up things and demanding that most edits have sources to them well it wouldn’t work especially since I tried in the past and those morons removed it even though I tell people to look it up if you don’t believe me.

I came here from Robots but this song intrigues me even more out of context. The choice of instruments, the composition, the singer's voice, the persistent beat across the whole thing, all of these elements work together to create an extremely well-realized sound in a way that feels almost effortless. If the lyrics were absent or vague you'd still get something close to the image of these toiling laborers working in their own little society just from listening to the music alone.
Welcome to Tom Waits.

Close. Its about Miners. In the early days Miners were threaten horribly and they practicly lived in Mines or had Housings just outside of the mine entrances.
Yes i was thinking the same thing
Check out the Hal Wilmer project...all Disney songs done by various artist. Tom waits does hi-ho. The dwarves working song.
Im a jeweler and it and other “dwarf” style music plays all day in my shop while i hammer and melt silver and gold all day i try to beat the metal with the beat of the songs 😂
A world below the world. A maze of churning, grinding, hissing machines. The air is more smoke than oxygen. Eyes too sensitive to light to understand the sun. Nightmarish things below us all. That's what this song feels like.
So The Falmer from The Elder Scrolls?
To me this song makes me think of mining and the dangerous working conditions and the beat of the somg sounds like pickaxes hitting the walls almost in the mine

I remember that when I saw Robots (2005) when I was a Kid, I always replayed the Scene of the ChopShop because of this Song! Glad I found the Film Version of the Music with Wait's Gravelly Voice in it!
Tom Waits blesses this earth with music that focuses on primal emotion first, with equally pungent lyrics second. It says a lot about his ability to take noise and form it into an atmosphere that you can perceive without even needing to comprehend his lyrics.
Those outmodes look up to him, supposing he decides to come back.
Tom has gone from sounding like a middle aged man after a third divorce to sounding like Oscar the Grouch on an all gravel and whiskey diet
