    Nice video! I make videos explaining names (hence the channel name) and this was a topic on my list. Think you've done a much better job than I could of!

      +Well... Actually Thanks, your style is good too! Hmm I may still do it, the idea for my video was more expanded than yours so it might still be relevant.

    In fairness to Eric the Red, Greenland was very probably much greener 1000 years ago. It endured over exploitation by livestock and then an ice age which killed or drove out the inhabitants.
    This is the maximum fairness one may allow Eric who was otherwise a rather unpleasant individual. His son Leif on the other hand was decent enough an qualifies as having discovered America or Vinland as it was called back then.

    Kalaallit Is pronounced the way it looks... EXCEPT: The double "a" makes a longer a sound (just hold the "a" a little longer), and the "ll" in Greenlandic makes the same sound as the Hebrew letter "khaf".

    Does this mean that the Norse were some of the original settlers on the islands (if they were second by the looks of it)?

    • @Aoderic
      @Aoderic 8 років тому +4

      +Mr Minstrel
      They where the first people to inhabit the southern half of Greenland, the Dorset people were the first in northern Greenland. The Inuits came 300 years after the Norse, and only arrived in southern Greenland after the Norse had disappeared around 1450.

    You chose really interesting topics......but your videos are too brief.
    I know that it takes alot of time to make each second of each video, but talking about these topics in depth would be appreciated.
    Thank you for considering my opinion.

      +Joujou Thanks for the feedback. The short videos tend to be little segments i use as breaks from making longer stuff (my video for fri-sat is around 5-6mins), but i know where you are coming from. I intended this one to be about 3 mins but it seems i speak faster than i should for my word count (still need to work out how many words per min).
      Videos do take quite a while to make, the really hard part tend to be getting images as i use wiki as the pics are public domain. I do try to have one longer video each week, and I am planning to increase the fact videos lengths and make these little segments around 3 mins if possible. If only i could clone myself! :P

    In spanish it's called "Groenlandia". This name has nothing to do with the land being green.
