Fun fact. The firing of gun salutes is a very old custom which appears to have originated in the early days of sail. Ships, when on good will visits to foreign ports, discharged all their guns to seaward on arrival thus indicating to the authorities ashore that their guns were empty and their visit peaceful. It was also the custom when at sea for the saluting ship to turn and head towards the ship being saluted. This originated in the days when ships were armed with broadside guns only and by heading towards the other ship the salute could not be mistaken for an act of aggression.
Sounds actually reasonble. I have hold a gun or two and I know when it is dangerous or not. No powder, no threat even if you have cannons.
Yeah, and the Port of call usually answered the salute likewise to show they won't be firing when the ship gets into their range.
@@Exodon2020 But I guessed with known ships you dont have to spend all powder. This is a foreign ship coming before phone or radio. You dont know its reasons.
The early days of sail (2000 BC) were a bit too early for gun salutes I think.
@@BorisHooiBoef I think, you perfectly well understand that I mean.
Been a while since Sweden did a viking raid now. xD
Dont worry about it.. you havent missed the norwegians yet have you ? ;) or did we do much damage last time we raided the UK back in the day..
@@Jorgen87
@@Jorgen87 It was mostly Danes who raided the UK though
@@Toke3004 as i just searched, : The most viking like country would be, historically, Denmark, as this is where the culture spread from. For the early part of the viking era Norway was mostly uninhabited, and Sweden was dominated by the Rus(The ones who went to Russia and became known as the Kievian Rus) So.. might been the Danes or the Norse ;)
@@Jorgen87 It's the same thing. Scandinavian culture hadn't split into Danish/Norwegian/Swedish so it is just referred to as Norse instead. But the vikings who raided England mostly came from what is now modern day Denmark.
I'm a little disappointed they didn't fire an actual Swedish salute which is 2 shots in rapid succession, this was a way of identifying the ship as Swedish. If the king was on board or for special occasions a double salute (2x2) was fired. This is the reason why we here in Sweden give four cheers/huzzahs after we've sang "Happy Birthday" to someone.
@julianscaeva Thanks, I didn't know this! Apparently neither did the ship crew.
Not everywhere in the country, in the southern parts of sweden we only give three cheers/huzzahs because we don't want to give the fourth one, as that one is dedicated to the king of sweden. This is because of our Danish past.
(This is what I've been told by older generations anyways.)
@@wooggie9685 Yes, Danish ships fired three shots in rapid succession to identify them as such. You're right about the three cheers in the south as well. I learned that at a birthday celebration down there and the host set me up by saying "four Scanian cheers for the birthday child!" and everyone but me stopped at three cheers so everyone laughed at me :)

I want to see the face from the gunner of the HMS Belfast at the moment the Götheborg gives her salute
Can't even imagine a real sea battle with old warships. The power in those things and the smoke combined with all the panic and noice would be fucking horrible.
Getting bombarded by a Manowar ship with 56 cannons in each broadside while in a wooden ship is pretty much the worst thing I can think of.
And still it is fucking awsome
I am brazilian and the best warship is the HMS Victory with 104 cannons.
@@mongesinistro8547 she wasn't by far the best ship.

@@fatfuckhatesyou I play a very realistic naval game, and have sunk several such ships in my flagship, the 50 gun frigate, H.M.S. Vengeance
@@skeletongaming828 So your game is better than reality and thus you know best right? That they changed everything in the game to make it more fun and playable doesn't matter to you? Or that some of the most effective tactics in reality just isn't implemented or very poorly. For example, one MAJOR thing that was done in battle a lot was to shoot up the rigging first. Chain shots were designed to cut lines, and if you cut the rigging lines the ship loses control of it's sail.. In the game that tactic is worthless... Another popular thing was musketeers in the rigging to shoot important people on the other ship.. Nelson himself was shot by such a guy. Sailing a ship into others with a skeleton crew and then torch it was also VERY effective and popular...Grape shots to kill crew and not damage your fine prize was also used.. And I can keep going on..
So go back to your kid cave, play your silly game.. And keep your mouth shut!
Even today this ship could fend off modern small pirate boats.. just load those cannons with a few hundred steel screws, nuts and bolts and fire and byebye pirates.
And think this is a merchant vessel !
Indeed it is. But still as a merchant ship she Used to have some guns and soldiers aboard to defend herself.
If she would be a military ship she would have had much more guns.
But the best is: the guns on Götheburg are REAL Canon Guns so they Sound like they used to have back then
She is, but at her time the lines between warship and merchantman were a little blurry because of Pirates, Privateers and everything in between. Also some countries reserved the right to draft these ships into Military Service if required.

is it a ship or a floating battery of firecrackers ?
Was a bit of a difference HMS Belfast's little salute gun, and the main battery guns of the Swedish ship.

Did the ship sail by herself to England or was it towed?
It sailed by itself. It has a large crew who can sail it using only the sails, and they have done even in storms, apparently. It also has modern engines and modern navigation and communications. It has been all the way from Sweden to China and back.
