Up until ~1967 people used that part of the beach as a trash dump. The glass that they threw into the ocean got polished and tumbled by the ocean and washes back up. Perhaps you stepped on some pieces that weren't quiet smooth, or some other sharp natural beach object (barnacles, oystershells, etc...)

Yes, it was a dump in the early 1900s. By 1967 the town was trying to clean up the beach. Now it is pretty much a tourist attraction.
Was there last summer, got my "glass jewels" and made a small trivet. For remembrance ech morning when I drink my coffee.

ah i just went on vacation there i stood in that exact spot only it was foggy really really foggy
