So last week I did a back to back test ride of the Transalp and Africa Twin Adventure Sport (manual shift with quick shifter and standard suspension). I wasn’t too fussed about the Transalp simply because of how it looked BUT the test ride was a real surprise. The Transalp was a joy to ride. Nice and light, very manageable, powerful and responsive engine, sublime handling, great wind protection, good brakes. In short, I really really liked everything about it except the looks. I got off it after an hour and even said to the dealer what a great bike I thought it was. Then I test rode their AT as in the config mentioned above. It’s fair to say the AT is a Goliath of a machine compared to the Transalp. The extra weight is instantly noticeable just picking it up off the side stand when you straddle the thing. But with that extra weight came noticeably extra power. Handling was again really good but fair to say that the AT has to be wrested with more than the Transalp because of it. Is it unmanageable? No, far from it, on the move the AT’s additional bulk wasn’t even noticeable. So decisions, decisions, what is best. If it came down to pure one up riding pleasure with some additional luggage I’d have to say the Transalp would win it for me. It’s just so usable in every way, but it was also evident that if you started loading it up with pillion and luggage as well, it would start to wheeze. More to the point, I think all that weight on it would adversely affect its handling. It was evident the AT was built to be capable of carrying rider, pillion and luggage for the long haul with relative ease. I’m looking for an adventure bike that I can also take my better half along for the journey. Not all the time, but at least some of the time, so I needed a bike that could do it all. After the test ride my dealer told me no Tri-colour AT’s available until 2024 from Honda UK, so I went scouting the classifieds. I just took delivery of a 1 year old Africa Twin Adventure Sport, manual shift with quick-shifter and regular suspension. The previous owner barely rode it, kitted it out with pretty much every Honda OEM accessory available for the bike and it had just been serviced with new tyres. Yes, it’s a big bike, I’d rather not have the weight if I’m honest, but now already planning a few day trips to start with with the Mrs and before summer is out will try a three or four day tour, two up, with the luggage. Cant wait. I think the Transalp was and is a fantastic bike. If the Mrs decides the touring just isn’t for her, then I will likely trade this AT for a new Transalp. It was just a rewarding bike to ride for the brief hour I had it. My only gripe was I wished they had designed the front like the AT. It is definitely worthy of that rather than the generic face it wears. Unfortunately, when having to move mass there is no escaping basic physics and thats where the AT became a necessity for me, but one up touring with luggage and little to no off-reading, the Transalp takes the prize. It’s a great machine.
It's really great that in this day we get to enjoy such diverse and excellent motorcycles. Truly something for everyone. I have been keenly eyeing this Transalp for much the same reasons. Thanks!
Yep, the TransAlp will most likely be my next bike. It will be a great stable mate to my Honda CRF300 Rally, and do the things that that bike is uncomfortable doing. My old, exceptionally reliable KLR 650 is getting a bit long in the tooth at 81,000 miles. Time to let it go to a beginner rider. Thanks for the review.
In the long run, I tend to fall in love with my long-serving faithful machines that don't ask much in return or make me pay off a loan for a decade. They become part of me. The crotch rocket canyon carver Vegas missile that needs more maintenance than the service it gives - gets sold after 2 years.
Nice review, i love your honesty, and went to my local dealer to look at one. Sitting on it proves its very friendly towards my arthritic joints and im going to book a test ride when it stops raining here 👍

Having sat on it, I need to stand on the footpeg to get on and it needs to be about an inch lower, otherwise it felt close to perfect to sit on, unlike the AT. Coincidentally, the other bike I really fancy is the speed twin. I bought an interceptor 2 weeks ago, rode it once due to weather and work. It is a great bike but I miss the power and, more so the torque more than I thought I would. I will give it a couple more months to see if I get used to it but, honestly, if the speed was in my budget I would have gone for that straight away.
No shame in using the footpeg to get on & off; I use it all the time😊 I would advise you don’t try the Speed Twin, because once you’ve ridden it, you’ll want it! Think Interceptor with 3 (not 2) engines and you’re about there. But I’d be the first to admit that the Triumph is totally impractical next to bikes like the Transalp or ADV scooter. I’m very lucky to have all 3, but if I could only have 1, it would have to be the Transalp😊
@@RocketMan_Moto thanks, I'm lucky enough to have 3 and 1 needing restoration. I have old bikes which allow me to do this as I could only have one otherwise. I will end up with either a speed, transalp or similar at some point and keep my resto fj1200 which I have owned for 28 years. I know the feeling of having a supreme "travel purpose" bike.. but just in a smaller scale. I have owned 11 bikes in the last 6 years and loved them all, the nicest one was a CB1100Rs which I still regret that I had to sell, the last one was a NC750x which for me was s the perfect all rounder, I thought I will keep it for very long time but then came the "..its awesome ..if you just want to travel" feeling.. Now I sold it and just bought a cheap bandit for fun :) I think we are blessed that we have a chance try and own so many different bikes, but this makes us spoiled a little bit. Anyway, keep up the good work, awesome videos
Completely agree I use my AT1100 for touring and it’s too heavy really, and I can’t justify the GS1250/1300 price tag when I could have a Transalp and Suzuki DE for the same price as one GS.
totally agree with you when you said, the purpose of a travel bike is to bring you somewhere with reliability and comfort...but as many riders i want to love her look also 😜
@@RocketMan_Moto we rode it mid week at about 10.30 am. I think we saw three cars only until we reached Monchique. We then rode on to Alvor and that little town with the hill fort ( name escapes me) before heading back to our hotel which was just the other side of Albufiera We did over 300 miles in the four days we had the scooter - some of the best rides I’ve ever done.
I see a lot of tourists on scooters, spot them a mile off. Not too many in the hills, though, so well done for venturing away from the coast and the usual hotspots👍

@@RocketMan_Moto I honestly believe they take turns sharing channels RM. It makes sense, they can't share all channels to everyone all of the time. My long held belief is, when everyone is on UA-cam, noone is on UA-cam. The more creators that join up, the less each channel will be shared.
Altough you're no Itchy Boots ;) I still watch your video's with great joy, especially the Transalp video's. I fell in love with this bike and although I can't afford one, it is om my shortlist as a successor to my 2011 V-Strom. I have ridden one today and for me, this is as close as a bike can be perfect to me. I have to be honest, my strom feels a bit more comfortable. But the Transalp's engine is really something else! And that's coming from a proud V-Strom owner! I'm not over my crush with this bike. 3 things keep me from buying one. 1. My Strom is in almost perfect condition and I really like it! 2. Budget 3. Spoked wheels and no tubeless tires. This really is a dealbreaker for me! If Honda would produce a more street orientated version with casted wheels and tubeless tires and if I would win a lottery, I would immediately buy one!
I have owned a tiger gt pro for about four months now , zero problems with heat from the engine, I can feel more heat coming from my speed twin . Nice bike , I enjoy your channel 👍
I think it all depends where you live. I have no problem with the heat from my Speed Twin in the colder months here, but it’s unpleasant in the summer. The Tiger also ducts the hot air from the radiator right onto my knees, which is extremely uncomfortable when the ambient temperature is 30+, as it often is here🥵
Fair play the bike looks great in that colour scheme and is perfectly suited to those roads. Everything is a compromise and the new Transalp seems to occupy the middle weight Adventure goldilocks zone with respect to performance, weight, suspension, tech etc.... The price seems about right too and your fuel consumption figures are excellent. Looking forward to riding one this summer hopefully 🤔😉👍👍
Yep, can see the attraction. They (the brand) are dominant in WSP and BSB currently. Always thought they were brilliant, expensive, but now seem reliable.
800DE:better engine at low rev,better suspension,TFT and control very intuitive,you can see oil level at a glance;lot of small details better,even if the AT750 is a very good bike..enjoy is the most important!
Waiting, waiting, waiting for this bike to FINALLY get released to the U.S. i will be first in line. And like you, it will be a great 2nd bike. I'm never giving up my bagger.
I also have that transalp and the Africa twin adventure sport with the DC T and ES but they’re different bikes altogether. It’s very hard to ride something after riding the Africa twin it beats them all but I sure love my transalp
I don't think you were too negative in the last video. No bike is perfect and you just pointed out the niggles. You dont's mention the performance of this bike. True it can poodle along quite happily at modest speeds and enjoy the scenery etc, but I've been impressed on how quick it is when you give it 'the beans'. It accelerates really well and hits 3 digit speeds so quickly which is quite addictive (my licence is worried). As other testers have mentioned, the engine is superb. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the taller screen.
Thanks again for your considered and insightful videos. I came across them as a prospective Transalp buyer. I finally test rode the Transalp yesterday, the first test ride in South Australia I believe, and was actually a little disappointed. I may still buy it, as a replacement for my poor old, overworked (and extensively modified) 1995 Cagiva Elefant, but as you hint - the Transalp may not be 'a love job'. I am in the similarly fortunate position of having a highline road bike (Ducati) which is definitely a case of love! ($30k spent on lightening and upgrades, doing all work myself, and 102,000 on the clock). I also had a short ride on the Tuareg, which was a much better bike in terms of feeling a connection with it, but is too trail-orientated for my use, which will be primarily dirt roads and distances. First gear too short, seat too narrow and hard, and a more revvy and 'impatient' engine. And expensive, obviously, but a superior feeling machine altogether. I also sat on the 800DE while I was in its presence, and I expect you will find, as others have suggested, it is just too heavy. I went to put my foot on the left footrest to 'stirrup up', the suspension extended as I grabbed the 'bars, and the thing nearly fell over on me! I look forward to your reflections on it, after Transalp ownership. I suspect the 'weight thing' will dominate your comparative impressions, although I believe the low-end torque of its engine is better than the Honda's. The larger windscreen for the Transalp has been reported by some as aggravating the wind effect, so you may find that a disappointment also, depending on your height. I look forward to your subsequent videos on the Transalp. My temptation to buy the Transalp has been tempered by another 3 x month delay here on white ones. After being promised the thing since mid-April, and only getting to ride it yesterday, I remain perplexed at Honda's 'release strategy'. It isn't working for me, with fleets of white ones touring the outback free for journalists in other states, while we wait another three months to buy one. A mystery. Honda may need to focus more on the buyers they have waiting, rather than on lavish promotions to future customers!

I have seen talks of a non-DE VStrom version: 19" front wheel, and probably some other changes to make it less off-road focused. That sounds like a great compromise for me, it could allow to save some precious centimeters of seat height that make the Transalp and VStrom DE hard to consider for me.
Benpt, that's interesting to know. As I feel most V strom riders will be more road biased, gravel roads at most. So, a shorter, more road oriented version makes sense.
I'm just a bit sad they didn't keep the "funky" colors of the DE version. At least they were original. The colors of the DE version all look a bit sad to me, a bit "Honda"...
Transalp just landed at my dealership in Kingston, Ontario. If your son is still looking to get one, the dealer at West Coat should either have one , or coming any day now. Gonna ride it in a few days to see how it compares to T7 I had to get in the meantime.

Just took the Transalp for the first ride, and it was what I expected. Light, maneuverable, comfortable, approachable, and had Honda feel all around it. Having ridden CB500X and Africa twin on one end and T7 and VStrom 800DE on the other, I felt softer and shorter than T7 and lighter and shorter than VStrom 800DE. Nice response and very easy to ride ... "approachable" is the term that came to mind. I can see it being ridden for a long time and push NC750 out eventually. It is little bigger than I thought it would be but very light, much lighter to move than either of two competitors.
RM, I like the airline analogy. After all, it's all about the ride. For me, I'm not travelling intercontinental, I may be sipping beer not champagne, so my "turboprop aircraft" is my choice to reach those smaller remote places in PT!😉. See you soon & keep the reviews coming!

The Africa Twin is a fine machine, but it costs 50% more than the Transalp and I just wasn’t prepared to spend that much in what, for me, is a second bike😊
Nothing beats my 1200gs, but wouldn't mind an Africa Twin. Or a Transalp, or KTM 890 Adventure, Ducati DesertX, Aprilia Tuareg, Or, or, the list goes on!
Yep. It’s an appliance. A refrigerator or toaster. That’s my Vstrom 650. Does everything well and economically without complaint or drama. Do I love it? No. The bike I love is the 6th gen Honda VFR800 I traded in.😢
I'm thoroughly enjoying my new Cb500x, a very engaging and fun ride, but I think I'll have a test ride on the translap all the same, and then work out how/if I can persuade my bank manageress to allow me to upgrade...
Lots of good motorbikes, but you get the machine that suits your needs, not least your pocket. And if you want different bikes, in your garage, your pocket is much more comprimised. If your back is forced to the wall, the transalp does it all, albeit in a modest way.
What I would love to know is which bike you would choose between the Transalp and the Tiger 850/900gt? Focused purely on road riding. In other words comparing the engine performance, handling and comfort.
Sooo, just a typical Honda then? Tick in the box for fit form and function but lacking a little soul and character? That's not a criticism, the bike's obviously a means to an end and does "what it says on the tin" as they say. Basically does a great job of being .........a Honda. Great and objective review as always. Keep it up.

I loved it when I test rode it, Second only to the GS for comfort however why can't Honda ever get the screens looking and feeling better, not perfect that's impossible, just not rubbish would be great.
I had the opportunity to drive for a few hours. I liked the quickshifter, display, screen, and quite comfortable seat. What I didn't like was the annoying high-frequency vibration of the engine. The engine whistles quite loudly in a specific way - it's not very nice. Motorcycle too loud with standard exhaust. Suzuki 800DE could be a better choice, but the quickshifter doesn't work at all and the right leg turns into aroasted chicken because of heat (although other things are at a higher level than in the Honda).
I agree the buzzy engine on the Transalp gets annoying, but the heat from the Suzuki’s engine is really unbearable here in the summer. Thanks for your feedback😊

I'm just waiting for the local dealer here in Aus to get a demo V strom and Transalp. I was favouring the Suzuki. However, I sat on the Transalp, and it was just my size (5'9") where, as I've heard, the Suzuki is a bigger bike. See how we go. Cheers
Oh dear RM. You have now set the bar high. Two bikes you won’t sell😄 plus the scooter. Will the new place have a Barn? I very recently picked up a Triumph Tiger 900 GT and totally love it but I can get why it wouldn’t suit you. Rode in possibly the only 30 degree day we might see in the UK and the weather protection was so good I was soaked when I got off. Think it will be a brilliant winter bike with heated grips, etc. For me, I love it as a completely different experience to my T120. The Bonnie is very lazy gearing whereas the Tiger is low geared but up in say 5th is like a DCT. You hardly need to change apart from a full stop.

@@RocketMan_Moto just installed the deflector you recommended on the oem TALL screen and it’s magic ! My height is 6”4. (193cm) I have no idea how a little screen like that can make such a difference but I can ride my Transalp now without any issues, even with a modular helmet open on highway. Highly recommended. Well RM you had me fooled..from the review I thought you were underwhelmed with the Transalp and that it was another with a shortish shelf life in your garage….I can get that the Triumph is a keeper…we’re lucky that there are so many good bikes out there that fit most needs….a great time to be a biker! I know! Though doing some research I found the German Transalp is €2000 cheaper than the Dutch, this is due to taxes, but my brother in law said sometimes cheaper to buy in Germany and import there and pay the import tax Of course here in the UK, cause of Brexit 😒 we are totally screwed
@RocketMan_Moto here in Australia the tiger 900 is 10k more nearly than the 800. That's 3 quarters of the price of the 800. It would take 10 years for the 800 to lose 10k off its value. So to me it's still a serious option even if the quality is not that of the premium brands.

I shall enjoy your bike vicariously through you. It is indeed a looker. But I wouldn’t buy one as no cruise nor even an option to have it is a deal breaker for me. Also no tubeless tyres which whilst not a deal breaker is a negative for me. I could live with this, but long journeys and sticking within lower speed limits to avoid a ticket having cruise control is a God send. I have it on my cars and my Speed Triple RS. It makes driving and riding so less stressful. At first I thought it a gimmick, but it’s not. For me the KTM 890 Adv seems the best of the group, but you have to be prepared for reliability issues with KTM. Some owners seem to suffer with problems where others don’t, their bikes are totally reliable. It seems a very mixed bag. Anyway enjoy your Transalp. Hopefully you can do a tour across the Alps on it.
Everything was going so well with correcting your balanced view of the Transalp until you got to the comparison with a jumbo jet flight? I'm happy with your judgement on the Roadskin jeans I've bought (and the 10% discount, thanks), so I'm hoping the Transalp I've ordered will be better than a jumbo ride!
I took him to mean that it is possible to have a worthwhile ownership of a competent motorcycle without having to 'fall in love with it'. I rode it yesterday, and was quite disappointed, feeling that it might take a lot of miles, and a fair bit of work, to make it feel right. But I might buy it anyway, so that is how I understood RM's analogy.
Why get a 25 plus k's bike to enjoy an awesome adventure when with a 300 L you can travel the same distance on and off road ,and see fantastic places 😊. Is all about having a good time and save for the trip. Wisdom is your best allie.
Be interested to hear your thoughts on the Suzy 800DE. Tested one before ordering Transalp. Suzuki too expensive (in UK £1000 more). Yes it has quickshifter as standard but not everyone wants one, it's no looker and as for the vibration... All subjective of course
I like the Vstrom 800 DE better, lookswise. Seating position is perfect for me, even better than the Transalp. I don´t like the 21 inch wheels though. I only ride on the road and you can´t get good road tires for this size. So I´m waiting for the Vstrom 800 with 19 inch cast wheels, which is already confirmed for 2024. Even better would be a purely road focused tourer like the Tracer 700 or Tiger Sport 660. That´s the thing that´s still missing in either lineup.
I understand that. 99% of my riding is on the road, too, but I do like having the option of wandering down a gravel track from time to time. Ride safe :)
Sounds good to me, guess the only “Transalp”-Killer could be the 800 DE, or … a used GS for less money & more torque 😜😎 (bit heavier -228 kg, but still sporty & Allrounder for under 8 k €. After riding bmw roadster/ nakeds & still looking forward to get a used SpeedTwin once, I’m still totally happy with my 2012 model 👍🏻✨👋🏻
Frustrating that this bike hasn’t made it to Canada yet. We have the Scramblers just arriving, so it looks like the Transalpine will be a 2024 offering.
Yes, I was told a few months ago by Honda Europe that NA would be getting the Transalp in September, but it would appears as though it's going to be delayed until the new year??
The Honda Transalp must be a very well balanced bike but something that I found annoying is the fact that Honda doesn’t offer, even has an option, the cruise control feature on this bike?! Maybe it can be arranged in the after market, but that’s a not so easy decision and I don’t really know if there are devices that can be installed in the bike to overcome that important absence. I know that they have to sell AT model, but once more, it’s hard to accept. I value more a cruise control feature than the quick shifter , for instance. That’s one of those decisions from Japanese manufacturers that aren’t easy to comprehend…

I’m in a similar situation. I own a very heavily customized street twin which I love it and promised myself it will be my forever bike. I recently bought the transalp. I love it too not in a similar way as my triumph. The transalp is the perfect do it all comfortably bike. The triumph is what speaks to my heart. I’m just glad that I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford to keep both of them in my garage. Just a question the barkbusters you’ve installed can you tell me the model number you used because the transalp ones are not available yet and I’m wondering if you used another version from Africa or Nc?
Interesting you didn’t go for the guzzi v85tt… it’s not a honda, but comfort, offroad, build, etc is similar to honda but has a cruise control and a range-o-meter… it does not have a quick shifter. Would be an interesting comparison. Thank you for all great vids.
I committed to a CB500X just before the Transalp was launched, as a second bike to my Africa Twin. I've owned over fifty bikes and the AT is the best of the lot, but the years are taking their toll and I'm finding it too heavy to move around. I've just returned from a 1,700 mile trip to the Alps to do some trail riding and while it doesn't have the off road pedigree of the AT, the CB exceeded expectations on the road and averaged 83 mpg. However I couldn't have it as my only bike because I like the grunt of a litre bike. I wonder if maybe I should have given the Transalp a go but I just felt for future proofing my riding career from my increasingly dodgy knees the smaller bike would be better, does the Transalp feel much bigger, particularly regarding seat height? Well done for doing a follow up and making the review more complete.

I've gone from ATAS and TA is perfect with a QS, not a DCT but close on downshifts, upshifts need more practice. Age and joints moving on gravel. Could easily pick up if needed.
No tubeless tires either Honda Transalp 750 or Suzuki V Strom 800 DE it is NO to it. At this point Aprilia Tuareg 660 or what I own Yamaha Tracer 900 GT (since I’m mostly on road).
How do you think that this TransAlp would contend against the 2023 CFMoto Ibex 800T.....? I must admit that I was a little bit averse to the "new" brand myself BUT after realizing that the CFMoto is just a re-branded KTM and the positive reviews- I'm starting to warm up to this bike over the TransAlp. I've been patiently waiting for the TransAlp here in the states, as I was pretty sure that it was going to be my next bike, but the CFMoto has cruise control among many other desirable features...
CF Motos certainly have all the equipment, but I was underwhelmed by the riding experience, and any savings you make now will probably be lost when you sell in a few years🤔
How is it the transalp 750 vs the tiger sport 660? How’s the riding experience like between these 2 fellas? As I’m considering a reliable tourer thanks 😊
Hi again. So. after the saddest comment ever posted on this site (it was mine...sorry) about trading my XL 750 against a AT at the very moment I would get back home (after a 6.500 km ride this summer) here is my final 'honest" thought about the Transalp 750. Just keep it. I shall. she does everything one can possibly need. in a very elegant manner. Of course, not sensational. But she 's such a good girl. Of course I hated all the speedways I have crossed in Spain and France, especially when it was windy. Of course I hate that the wind protection was weak and so was the protection against rain (something you must not endeavor that much in Algarve, you lucky :) ) but at the end: this bike is great. really. a perfect equilibrium between power and lightness. So when it is about to travel more than 3K km, I am now considering a GS or an RT 1250. Second hand. for the rest, this Transalp is really great. and this is my last word. :)
hey, I heard in one of your videos that you are tall too. I m selecting enduros for testriding, would you say Transalp is good for 190cm. Also comfortable after a couple of hours? Did you mod the bike for height (risers, ..). thanks for your videos

I haven’t ridden the 750GS, so really wouldn’t like to comment. All I will say is that I vowed never to buy another ‘Chinese BMW’, after my experience with the F900. All similar engines I’ve tried (CF Moto 800, for example) have been equally devoid of character, unfortunately🙁
Hi, Just a question. I also own this motorcycle and I have the option 'Trip A autoreset enabled' so whenever I fuel up it should autoreset my trip A data, but after refuelling 3x now it just doesnt do it. I usually refill every 300km so its plenty empty that it should realise I have refuelled, but it doesnt work. I have tried to disable - enable the function and make sure its 'on' but it doesnt help. Have u tried this function?
I know, it doesn’t really work properly. Says in the user manual that it resets, but mine never seems to either. Hopefully this will be resolved in a future software update🙏

Good call! Try Sao Marcos to Monchique (central Algarve), or the N2 north from Faro. But anywhere in the hills that run parallel to the coast is nice. Btw, it was 30 degrees this afternoon😊☀️
Yes! Then keep going west from Sao Marcos to Monchique. Down to Portimao and back to Faro (or where ever) along either the N125, or (quicker) the A22 toll motorway (you'll need a badge for this, however)
@@RocketMan_Moto Taking the tank off on some bikes is a pure hassle, I think on the new vstrom 800 the air filter is very easy to access just take the seat off, could be wrong though. if only Suzuki would make a more road based version with cast tubeless wheels with that new engine, and add cruise control.
I agree that the vibration dampener does look terrible, but it seems to work well and that's the main thing for me. QL is still the best (least bad??) solution, imo :)

Loved the video, the Monchique to São Marcos da Serra road is one of my absolute favourites. ….Just watch for stags! About a month ago one I was riding that road with friends, we were only going slowly admiring the scenery and a stag ran out onto the road. It emerged between me and my friends on their bike in front and it deliberately went after their bike. Sounds crazy, but it jumped out onto the road in front of me and behind my friends bike. Because it was behind him, he and his wife didn’t even see it, they were looking the other way at the scenery. I braked and stopped opening up a huge gap between the bikes to allow the stag to cross the road, but instead it chose to chase the other bike. When it got level with them it then tried to jump over the bike, kicking the pillion passenger off her seat in the process. Fortunately other than a couple of black eyes, all over bruising, ruined helmet and bike gear she walked away from it. Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera on to catch it on video, but if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I wouldn’t have believed it. I will certainly be much more wary on that stretch of road now.
Wow, sobering tale. I must admit I've never heard of deer/stags actually attacking vehicles before. I thought they only went for people who strayed into their territory on foot
Rocketman I think the problem was there were three bikes, my wife was leading on her bike, then our friends riding two up and I was tail end Charlie. The stag was next to a near vertical rise so it had no escape route to its right, and we were between it and it’s escape route. I can only assume it saw us as it’s natural predator (ie pack animals) my wife had got in front of it, our friends were slightly ahead of it and I was coming up behind it. It could have easily run behind the second bike and in front of me, but my best guess is instinct took over and it removed one of the threats on its way to freedom. Bloody scary for the poor pillion who was knocked off though.
@@RocketMan_Moto Does the suspension (I assume you adjusted it to your weight and riding style) compress a lot when you sit on it, brake hard and go over bumps etc? I am worried how will it deal with my weight. I am 184cm / 115 kg.
It did, but I added 2 clicks of preload to the rear shock and now it's a lot better. The front still dives under braking, but all adventure bikes I've ridden in this class do that :)
Enjoy your vids, you got it wrong with the Interceptor though, it's a lovely bike. Was looking for a mid size touring bike and the Transalp was definitely on the top of the list, ended up buying a Guzzi V85TT though after a test ride. Less HP than the Transalp but characterful and air cooled. Try one 👍
A bike I wanted to like with far to many compromises no cruise no adjustable suspension no tubeless tyres and the engines strangled to meet A2 licenses no thanks
So, I'm pretty close to finalising the nimble Transalp XL 750 (Test-Rode it in Shorts: Cool as a Cat). But at around 16.5K USD (we pay some crazy import taxes) it does seem like a whole lot for its Plain Jane Specs. Another bike that has come into the picture is a pre-owned 2019 CRF1000L Africa Twin (fully-loaded and souped up with performance upgrades & accessories + tubeless spokes!) for almost the same price. What say??
I’d go for a brand new Transalp over a brand new Africa Twin, so a 5-year-old Africa Twin that’s been ‘messed with’ and has no manufacturer warranty stands no chance😊
Yes, that is an issue. The ducts from the radiator have been redesigned on the 'new' 2024 Tiger, but it won't be available until April at the earliest.

So last week I did a back to back test ride of the Transalp and Africa Twin Adventure Sport (manual shift with quick shifter and standard suspension).
I wasn’t too fussed about the Transalp simply because of how it looked BUT the test ride was a real surprise. The Transalp was a joy to ride. Nice and light, very manageable, powerful and responsive engine, sublime handling, great wind protection, good brakes. In short, I really really liked everything about it except the looks. I got off it after an hour and even said to the dealer what a great bike I thought it was.
Then I test rode their AT as in the config mentioned above.
It’s fair to say the AT is a Goliath of a machine compared to the Transalp. The extra weight is instantly noticeable just picking it up off the side stand when you straddle the thing. But with that extra weight came noticeably extra power. Handling was again really good but fair to say that the AT has to be wrested with more than the Transalp because of it. Is it unmanageable? No, far from it, on the move the AT’s additional bulk wasn’t even noticeable.
So decisions, decisions, what is best.
If it came down to pure one up riding pleasure with some additional luggage I’d have to say the Transalp would win it for me. It’s just so usable in every way, but it was also evident that if you started loading it up with pillion and luggage as well, it would start to wheeze. More to the point, I think all that weight on it would adversely affect its handling.
It was evident the AT was built to be capable of carrying rider, pillion and luggage for the long haul with relative ease.
I’m looking for an adventure bike that I can also take my better half along for the journey. Not all the time, but at least some of the time, so I needed a bike that could do it all.
After the test ride my dealer told me no Tri-colour AT’s available until 2024 from Honda UK, so I went scouting the classifieds.
I just took delivery of a 1 year old Africa Twin Adventure Sport, manual shift with quick-shifter and regular suspension. The previous owner barely rode it, kitted it out with pretty much every Honda OEM accessory available for the bike and it had just been serviced with new tyres.
Yes, it’s a big bike, I’d rather not have the weight if I’m honest, but now already planning a few day trips to start with with the Mrs and before summer is out will try a three or four day tour, two up, with the luggage. Cant wait.
I think the Transalp was and is a fantastic bike. If the Mrs decides the touring just isn’t for her, then I will likely trade this AT for a new Transalp. It was just a rewarding bike to ride for the brief hour I had it. My only gripe was I wished they had designed the front like the AT. It is definitely worthy of that rather than the generic face it wears.
Unfortunately, when having to move mass there is no escaping basic physics and thats where the AT became a necessity for me, but one up touring with luggage and little to no off-reading, the Transalp takes the prize. It’s a great machine.

It will be a great stable mate to my Honda CRF300 Rally, and do the things that that bike is uncomfortable doing.

Having sat on it, I need to stand on the footpeg to get on and it needs to be about an inch lower, otherwise it felt close to perfect to sit on, unlike the AT. Coincidentally, the other bike I really fancy is the speed twin. I bought an interceptor 2 weeks ago, rode it once due to weather and work. It is a great bike but I miss the power and, more so the torque more than I thought I would. I will give it a couple more months to see if I get used to it but, honestly, if the speed was in my budget I would have gone for that straight away.
No shame in using the footpeg to get on & off; I use it all the time😊 I would advise you don’t try the Speed Twin, because once you’ve ridden it, you’ll want it! Think Interceptor with 3 (not 2) engines and you’re about there. But I’d be the first to admit that the Triumph is totally impractical next to bikes like the Transalp or ADV scooter. I’m very lucky to have all 3, but if I could only have 1, it would have to be the Transalp😊

I will end up with either a speed, transalp or similar at some point and keep my resto fj1200 which I have owned for 28 years. I know the feeling of having a supreme "travel purpose" bike.. but just in a smaller scale. I have owned 11 bikes in the last 6 years and loved them all, the nicest one was a CB1100Rs which I still regret that I had to sell, the last one was a NC750x which for me was s the perfect all rounder, I thought I will keep it for very long time but then came the "..its awesome ..if you just want to travel" feeling.. Now I sold it and just bought a cheap bandit for fun :)
I think we are blessed that we have a chance try and own so many different bikes, but this makes us spoiled a little bit.

Completely agree I use my AT1100 for touring and it’s too heavy really, and I can’t justify the GS1250/1300 price tag when I could have a Transalp and Suzuki DE for the same price as one GS.

@@RocketMan_Moto we rode it mid week at about 10.30 am. I think we saw three cars only until we reached Monchique. We then rode on to Alvor and that little town with the hill fort ( name escapes me) before heading back to our hotel which was just the other side of Albufiera
We did over 300 miles in the four days we had the scooter - some of the best rides I’ve ever done.
I see a lot of tourists on scooters, spot them a mile off. Not too many in the hills, though, so well done for venturing away from the coast and the usual hotspots👍

I fell in love with this bike and although I can't afford one, it is om my shortlist as a successor to my 2011 V-Strom.
I have ridden one today and for me, this is as close as a bike can be perfect to me.
I have to be honest, my strom feels a bit more comfortable. But the Transalp's engine is really something else! And that's coming from a proud V-Strom owner!
I'm not over my crush with this bike. 3 things keep me from buying one.
1. My Strom is in almost perfect condition and I really like it!
2. Budget
3. Spoked wheels and no tubeless tires. This really is a dealbreaker for me!
If Honda would produce a more street orientated version with casted wheels and tubeless tires and if I would win a lottery, I would immediately buy one!

I have owned a tiger gt pro for about four months now , zero problems with heat from the engine, I can feel more heat coming from my speed twin .

I think it all depends where you live. I have no problem with the heat from my Speed Twin in the colder months here, but it’s unpleasant in the summer. The Tiger also ducts the hot air from the radiator right onto my knees, which is extremely uncomfortable when the ambient temperature is 30+, as it often is here🥵
Being a perfect bike isn’t enough. You’ll want to experience more bikes, even the less than perfect ones. Glad you like it though! I like it too.
I’m lucky in that I get to experience many different bikes, but the Transalp is the right bike to have in my garage😊

Fair play the bike looks great in that colour scheme and is perfectly suited to those roads. Everything is a compromise and the new Transalp seems to occupy the middle weight Adventure goldilocks zone with respect to performance, weight, suspension, tech etc.... The price seems about right too and your fuel consumption figures are excellent. Looking forward to riding one this summer hopefully 🤔😉👍👍

I also have that transalp and the Africa twin adventure sport with the DC T and ES but they’re different bikes altogether. It’s very hard to ride something after riding the Africa twin it beats them all but I sure love my transalp

I don't think you were too negative in the last video. No bike is perfect and you just pointed out the niggles. You dont's mention the performance of this bike. True it can poodle along quite happily at modest speeds and enjoy the scenery etc, but I've been impressed on how quick it is when you give it 'the beans'. It accelerates really well and hits 3 digit speeds so quickly which is quite addictive (my licence is worried). As other testers have mentioned, the engine is superb. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the taller screen.
Yes, performance is very good for only 90hp. It feels much livelier than the F900XR, which has 105
The best bike is either the BMW R1100S or the Triumph Street Triple 675. Lovely good all-purpose machines. Well, on the road at any rate.

Thanks again for your considered and insightful videos. I came across them as a prospective Transalp buyer. I finally test rode the Transalp yesterday, the first test ride in South Australia I believe, and was actually a little disappointed. I may still buy it, as a replacement for my poor old, overworked (and extensively modified) 1995 Cagiva Elefant, but as you hint - the Transalp may not be 'a love job'. I am in the similarly fortunate position of having a highline road bike (Ducati) which is definitely a case of love! ($30k spent on lightening and upgrades, doing all work myself, and 102,000 on the clock).
I also had a short ride on the Tuareg, which was a much better bike in terms of feeling a connection with it, but is too trail-orientated for my use, which will be primarily dirt roads and distances. First gear too short, seat too narrow and hard, and a more revvy and 'impatient' engine. And expensive, obviously, but a superior feeling machine altogether.
I also sat on the 800DE while I was in its presence, and I expect you will find, as others have suggested, it is just too heavy. I went to put my foot on the left footrest to 'stirrup up', the suspension extended as I grabbed the 'bars, and the thing nearly fell over on me! I look forward to your reflections on it, after Transalp ownership. I suspect the 'weight thing' will dominate your comparative impressions, although I believe the low-end torque of its engine is better than the Honda's.
The larger windscreen for the Transalp has been reported by some as aggravating the wind effect, so you may find that a disappointment also, depending on your height. I look forward to your subsequent videos on the Transalp. My temptation to buy the Transalp has been tempered by another 3 x month delay here on white ones. After being promised the thing since mid-April, and only getting to ride it yesterday, I remain perplexed at Honda's 'release strategy'. It isn't working for me, with fleets of white ones touring the outback free for journalists in other states, while we wait another three months to buy one. A mystery.
Honda may need to focus more on the buyers they have waiting, rather than on lavish promotions to future customers!

I have seen talks of a non-DE VStrom version: 19" front wheel, and probably some other changes to make it less off-road focused. That sounds like a great compromise for me, it could allow to save some precious centimeters of seat height that make the Transalp and VStrom DE hard to consider for me.

Benpt, that's interesting to know. As I feel most V strom riders will be more road biased, gravel roads at most. So, a shorter, more road oriented version makes sense.

Transalp just landed at my dealership in Kingston, Ontario. If your son is still looking to get one, the dealer at West Coat should either have one , or coming any day now. Gonna ride it in a few days to see how it compares to T7 I had to get in the meantime.

Just took the Transalp for the first ride, and it was what I expected. Light, maneuverable, comfortable, approachable, and had Honda feel all around it. Having ridden CB500X and Africa twin on one end and T7 and VStrom 800DE on the other, I felt softer and shorter than T7 and lighter and shorter than VStrom 800DE. Nice response and very easy to ride ... "approachable" is the term that came to mind. I can see it being ridden for a long time and push NC750 out eventually. It is little bigger than I thought it would be but very light, much lighter to move than either of two competitors.

RM, I like the airline analogy. After all, it's all about the ride. For me, I'm not travelling intercontinental, I may be sipping beer not champagne, so my "turboprop aircraft" is my choice to reach those smaller remote places in PT!😉.

The Africa Twin is a fine machine, but it costs 50% more than the Transalp and I just wasn’t prepared to spend that much in what, for me, is a second bike😊
Nothing beats my 1200gs, but wouldn't mind an Africa Twin. Or a Transalp, or KTM 890 Adventure, Ducati DesertX, Aprilia Tuareg, Or, or, the list goes on!

Lots of good motorbikes, but you get the machine that suits your needs, not least your pocket. And if you want different bikes, in your garage, your pocket is much more comprimised. If your back is forced to the wall, the transalp does it all, albeit in a modest way.

What I would love to know is which bike you would choose between the Transalp and the Tiger 850/900gt? Focused purely on road riding. In other words comparing the engine performance, handling and comfort.
The new 900 is in my shortlist, but it’s considerably more expensive than the Transalp😉
Sooo, just a typical Honda then? Tick in the box for fit form and function but lacking a little soul and character? That's not a criticism, the bike's obviously a means to an end and does "what it says on the tin" as they say. Basically does a great job of being .........a Honda.

I loved it when I test rode it, Second only to the GS for comfort however why can't Honda ever get the screens looking and feeling better, not perfect that's impossible, just not rubbish would be great.
The TFT screen is too small, but other than that I think it’s ok😊

I had the opportunity to drive for a few hours.
I liked the quickshifter, display, screen, and quite comfortable seat.
What I didn't like was the annoying high-frequency vibration of the engine. The engine whistles quite loudly in a specific way - it's not very nice. Motorcycle too loud with standard exhaust.
Suzuki 800DE could be a better choice, but the quickshifter doesn't work at all and the right leg turns into aroasted chicken because of heat (although other things are at a higher level than in the Honda).
I agree the buzzy engine on the Transalp gets annoying, but the heat from the Suzuki’s engine is really unbearable here in the summer. Thanks for your feedback😊

I'm just waiting for the local dealer here in Aus to get a demo V strom and Transalp. I was favouring the Suzuki. However, I sat on the Transalp, and it was just my size (5'9") where, as I've heard, the Suzuki is a bigger bike. See how we go. Cheers

I very recently picked up a Triumph Tiger 900 GT and totally love it but I can get why it wouldn’t suit you. Rode in possibly the only 30 degree day we might see in the UK and the weather protection was so good I was soaked when I got off. Think it will be a brilliant winter bike with heated grips, etc. For me, I love it as a completely different experience to my T120. The Bonnie is very lazy gearing whereas the Tiger is low geared but up in say 5th is like a DCT. You hardly need to change apart from a full stop.
I know… I was only thinking this morning that I quite fancy a Streetfighter. There’s a new Ducati dealer opening in Faro soon😬

(193cm) I have no idea how a little screen like that can make such a difference but I can ride my Transalp now without any issues, even with a modular helmet open on highway. Highly recommended. @RocketMan_Moto here in Australia the tiger 900 is 10k more nearly than the 800. That's 3 quarters of the price of the 800. It would take 10 years for the 800 to lose 10k off its value. So to me it's still a serious option even if the quality is not that of the premium brands.
Yes, Chinese bikes make more sense in Australia. Transportation costs make them too expensive here.

I shall enjoy your bike vicariously through you. It is indeed a looker. But I wouldn’t buy one as no cruise nor even an option to have it is a deal breaker for me. Also no tubeless tyres which whilst not a deal breaker is a negative for me. I could live with this, but long journeys and sticking within lower speed limits to avoid a ticket having cruise control is a God send. I have it on my cars and my Speed Triple RS. It makes driving and riding so less stressful. At first I thought it a gimmick, but it’s not.
For me the KTM 890 Adv seems the best of the group, but you have to be prepared for reliability issues with KTM. Some owners seem to suffer with problems where others don’t, their bikes are totally reliable. It seems a very mixed bag.
Anyway enjoy your Transalp. Hopefully you can do a tour across the Alps on it.

I took him to mean that it is possible to have a worthwhile ownership of a competent motorcycle without having to 'fall in love with it'. I rode it yesterday, and was quite disappointed, feeling that it might take a lot of miles, and a fair bit of work, to make it feel right. But I might buy it anyway, so that is how I understood RM's analogy.

Be interested to hear your thoughts on the Suzy 800DE. Tested one before ordering Transalp. Suzuki too expensive (in UK £1000 more). Yes it has quickshifter as standard but not everyone wants one, it's no looker and as for the vibration... All subjective of course

I like the Vstrom 800 DE better, lookswise. Seating position is perfect for me, even better than the Transalp. I don´t like the 21 inch wheels though. I only ride on the road and you can´t get good road tires for this size. So I´m waiting for the Vstrom 800 with 19 inch cast wheels, which is already confirmed for 2024.
Even better would be a purely road focused tourer like the Tracer 700 or Tiger Sport 660. That´s the thing that´s still missing in either lineup.
I understand that. 99% of my riding is on the road, too, but I do like having the option of wandering down a gravel track from time to time. Ride safe :)
Sounds good to me, guess the only “Transalp”-Killer could be the 800 DE, or … a used GS for less money & more torque 😜😎 (bit heavier -228 kg, but still sporty & Allrounder for under 8 k €.

Yes, I was told a few months ago by Honda Europe that NA would be getting the Transalp in September, but it would appears as though it's going to be delayed until the new year??
The Honda Transalp must be a very well balanced bike but something that I found annoying is the fact that Honda doesn’t offer, even has an option, the cruise control feature on this bike?! Maybe it can be arranged in the after market, but that’s a not so easy decision and I don’t really know if there are devices that can be installed in the bike to overcome that important absence. I know that they have to sell AT model, but once more, it’s hard to accept. I value more a cruise control feature than the quick shifter , for instance. That’s one of those decisions from Japanese manufacturers that aren’t easy to comprehend…

I’m in a similar situation. I own a very heavily customized street twin which I love it and promised myself it will be my forever bike. I recently bought the transalp. I love it too not in a similar way as my triumph. The transalp is the perfect do it all comfortably bike. The triumph is what speaks to my heart. I’m just glad that I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford to keep both of them in my garage.
Just a question the barkbusters you’ve installed can you tell me the model number you used because the transalp ones are not available yet and I’m wondering if you used another version from Africa or Nc?

Interesting you didn’t go for the guzzi v85tt… it’s not a honda, but comfort, offroad, build, etc is similar to honda but has a cruise control and a range-o-meter… it does not have a quick shifter. Would be an interesting comparison.

I committed to a CB500X just before the Transalp was launched, as a second bike to my Africa Twin. I've owned over fifty bikes and the AT is the best of the lot, but the years are taking their toll and I'm finding it too heavy to move around. I've just returned from a 1,700 mile trip to the Alps to do some trail riding and while it doesn't have the off road pedigree of the AT, the CB exceeded expectations on the road and averaged 83 mpg.
However I couldn't have it as my only bike because I like the grunt of a litre bike. I wonder if maybe I should have given the Transalp a go but I just felt for future proofing my riding career from my increasingly dodgy knees the smaller bike would be better, does the Transalp feel much bigger, particularly regarding seat height? Well done for doing a follow up and making the review more complete.
Thanks for your feedback. I totally understand that. I actually ordered a new CB500X back last October, but when I saw the Transalp at EICMA in November, I couldn’t resist the idea of the extra power, so changed my order. Ride safe😊
I've gone from ATAS and TA is perfect with a QS, not a DCT but close on downshifts, upshifts need more practice. Age and joints moving on gravel. Could easily pick up if needed.

How do you think that this TransAlp would contend against the 2023 CFMoto Ibex 800T.....? I must admit that I was a little bit averse to the "new" brand myself BUT after realizing that the CFMoto is just a re-branded KTM and the positive reviews- I'm starting to warm up to this bike over the TransAlp. I've been patiently waiting for the TransAlp here in the states, as I was pretty sure that it was going to be my next bike, but the CFMoto has cruise control among many other desirable features...
CF Motos certainly have all the equipment, but I was underwhelmed by the riding experience, and any savings you make now will probably be lost when you sell in a few years🤔

So. after the saddest comment ever posted on this site (it was mine...sorry) about trading my XL 750 against a AT at the very moment I would get back home (after a 6.500 km ride this summer) here is my final 'honest" thought about the Transalp 750. Just keep it. I shall. she does everything one can possibly need. in a very elegant manner. Of course, not sensational. But she 's such a good girl. Of course I hated all the speedways I have crossed in Spain and France, especially when it was windy. Of course I hate that the wind protection was weak and so was the protection against rain (something you must not endeavor that much in Algarve, you lucky :) ) but at the end: this bike is great. really. a perfect equilibrium between power and lightness. So when it is about to travel more than 3K km, I am now considering a GS or an RT 1250. Second hand. for the rest, this Transalp is really great. and this is my last word. :)

hey, I heard in one of your videos that you are tall too. I m selecting enduros for testriding, would you say Transalp is good for 190cm. Also comfortable after a couple of hours? Did you mod the bike for height (risers, ..). thanks for your videos
I’m 187, no problem on the Transalp. The seat seems just as comfortable as on other bikes.

I haven’t ridden the 750GS, so really wouldn’t like to comment. All I will say is that I vowed never to buy another ‘Chinese BMW’, after my experience with the F900. All similar engines I’ve tried (CF Moto 800, for example) have been equally devoid of character, unfortunately🙁
Hi, Just a question. I also own this motorcycle and I have the option 'Trip A autoreset enabled' so whenever I fuel up it should autoreset my trip A data, but after refuelling 3x now it just doesnt do it. I usually refill every 300km so its plenty empty that it should realise I have refuelled, but it doesnt work. I have tried to disable - enable the function and make sure its 'on' but it doesnt help. Have u tried this function?
I know, it doesn’t really work properly. Says in the user manual that it resets, but mine never seems to either. Hopefully this will be resolved in a future software update🙏

Good call! Try Sao Marcos to Monchique (central Algarve), or the N2 north from Faro. But anywhere in the hills that run parallel to the coast is nice. Btw, it was 30 degrees this afternoon😊☀️

Yes! Then keep going west from Sao Marcos to Monchique. Down to Portimao and back to Faro (or where ever) along either the N125, or (quicker) the A22 toll motorway (you'll need a badge for this, however)

Taking the tank off on some bikes is a pure hassle, I think on the new vstrom 800 the air filter is very easy to access just take the seat off, could be wrong though.
if only Suzuki would make a more road based version with cast tubeless wheels with that new engine, and add cruise control.

I agree that the vibration dampener does look terrible, but it seems to work well and that's the main thing for me. QL is still the best (least bad??) solution, imo :)

Loved the video, the Monchique to São Marcos da Serra road is one of my absolute favourites. ….Just watch for stags! About a month ago one I was riding that road with friends, we were only going slowly admiring the scenery and a stag ran out onto the road. It emerged between me and my friends on their bike in front and it deliberately went after their bike. Sounds crazy, but it jumped out onto the road in front of me and behind my friends bike. Because it was behind him, he and his wife didn’t even see it, they were looking the other way at the scenery. I braked and stopped opening up a huge gap between the bikes to allow the stag to cross the road, but instead it chose to chase the other bike. When it got level with them it then tried to jump over the bike, kicking the pillion passenger off her seat in the process. Fortunately other than a couple of black eyes, all over bruising, ruined helmet and bike gear she walked away from it. Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera on to catch it on video, but if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I wouldn’t have believed it.
I will certainly be much more wary on that stretch of road now.
Wow, sobering tale. I must admit I've never heard of deer/stags actually attacking vehicles before. I thought they only went for people who strayed into their territory on foot
Rocketman I think the problem was there were three bikes, my wife was leading on her bike, then our friends riding two up and I was tail end Charlie. The stag was next to a near vertical rise so it had no escape route to its right, and we were between it and it’s escape route. I can only assume it saw us as it’s natural predator (ie pack animals) my wife had got in front of it, our friends were slightly ahead of it and I was coming up behind it. It could have easily run behind the second bike and in front of me, but my best guess is instinct took over and it removed one of the threats on its way to freedom. Bloody scary for the poor pillion who was knocked off though.

@@RocketMan_Moto Does the suspension (I assume you adjusted it to your weight and riding style) compress a lot when you sit on it, brake hard and go over bumps etc? I am worried how will it deal with my weight. I am 184cm / 115 kg.
It did, but I added 2 clicks of preload to the rear shock and now it's a lot better. The front still dives under braking, but all adventure bikes I've ridden in this class do that :)

So, I'm pretty close to finalising the nimble Transalp XL 750 (Test-Rode it in Shorts: Cool as a Cat). But at around 16.5K USD (we pay some crazy import taxes) it does seem like a whole lot for its Plain Jane Specs.
Another bike that has come into the picture is a pre-owned 2019 CRF1000L Africa Twin (fully-loaded and souped up with performance upgrades & accessories + tubeless spokes!) for almost the same price.
What say??
I’d go for a brand new Transalp over a brand new Africa Twin, so a 5-year-old Africa Twin that’s been ‘messed with’ and has no manufacturer warranty stands no chance😊

Yes, that is an issue. The ducts from the radiator have been redesigned on the 'new' 2024 Tiger, but it won't be available until April at the earliest.
